Shadowhunters 2x17 - Alec’s and Magnus’s character development
This is the first time I write something like this, but as I finished somehow analysing Alec’s character in that latest meta, things happened in this episode, 2x17, that continue the arguments I was referring to.
The whole situation is more about Malec as a couple if you look at it from a general perspective; however, if you try to understand what really happens and why they behave and react in that specific way, you have to consider Alec and Magnus as separated entities and characters.
As I said in his meta, Alec is a soldier. The problem, lately, is that he seems to be in a soldier mode ALL days, 24h. Being the Head of the Institute is an enormous responsability, even more with Valentine free in the world and Jonathan helping him, thus Alec is really busy and worried about everything. He has a great responsability and the Clave is following his every move: he can be fired at any moment. Him missing dinner and staying away from home for hours proves that. His mentality, in this specific moment, is very similar to season 1; not much for the fact that he’s hiding, but for the fact that he’s putting the “greater good” as the ultimate priority. He has to behave like a leader to save his people, and that means putting his personal relationships in second place. He’s ready to sacrifice what he has to, in order to reach that greater good (which is basically peace).
Magnus is in a completely different mental situation. Even if he’s the High Warlock of Brooklyn, he’s not putting his leader position ahead of his personal relationships. Magnus would save his beloved first, in a situation like this. That’s why he doesn’t understand why Alec didn’t tell him about the Sword; and this is also why Alec immediately says “Let’s not make this personal”. If you think about it, Alec was right in his assumption that Magnus knowing would put him in a bad position with the Downworlders. Furthermore, after everything Magnus went through, maybe Alec didn’t want to burden him with such a dangerous knowledge (I’m quoting @sfjessii spilling the truth here, considering also that Alec is in PERPETUAL “protecting” mode towards his family AND Magnus, even more after what happened with Valentine and Magnus’s memory). What he doesn’t understand is that it wasn’t his call. Magnus would have stayed “quiet”, as he said; he would have never betrayed Alec in some way, because Alec is more important.
The thing that is extremely relevant to notice is Magnus’s feelings. Weeks passed, not months; in these days his soul has been taken and put in another body; he has been tortured; he has nightmares and he can’t sleep, nor can he stay focused. He had a break down probably one or two days before, when HE STILL tried to hide everything from Alec, because he was too scared to share his inner demons. He did: he put down the walls that took 400 years to build and he finally shared probably his most terrible secret, something no one knew. Can you imagine how difficult that is? Baring it all, trusting someone completely. THAT moment was a turning point for their relationship and Magnus was absolutely sure that after something like this, no secrets, no obstacles, would stand in their way. If Alec accepted something like that (for Magnus what happened IS terrible), then they could share anything. Yet, the day after, they don’t. He feels betrayed. It’s not even the Sword itself, I would say. It’s just what happened. That Alec didn’t think to share it, to comment on the praise he was giving during dinner, that he didn’t trust MAGNUS as well in return. That hurts. Trusting, and seeing the other not trusting back. It hurts even more when you share something so deeply intimate and scary. It hurts more than Camille cheating, or any other lovers leaving, because he EXPECTED that from them, but he didn’t expect THIS from Alec. And we finally see Magnus angry; angry because he’s hurt. He’s hurt about trusting and putting his walls down. Angry at Alec but also angry at himself for believing in love again. Everything he thought he finally had is actually getting destroyed. His reaction is not over the top, if you consider that he lived for 400 years old and a lot of the 17′000 lovers he had disappointed him and hurt him. His FAMILY betrayed him first, when he was 9.
As I said, I don’t think Alec was completely wrong. I understand his position; however, Alec didn’t take into consideration Magnus’s thoughts and personal involvement, because Alec was in full soldier-leader mode.
It IS stretching it a bit, but FOR MAGNUS, this is the same situation that happened in earlier season 2, when Isabelle was an yin fen addict. Magnus not telling Alec about Isabelle going after yin fen hurt Alec too: he expected Magnus to understand how important it was, because it was about HIS SISTER, it’s FAMILY. This, for Alec, is the difference between PERSONAL and PROFESSIONAL. The whole episode with Isabelle was personal, while the Soul Sword is not. For Magnus, both are.
If you look at it from a story telling perspective, it IS good angst. It lays a wonderful path to follow: solving the trust issue once and for all; discussing on giving all, 100%, and putting walls down; being FINALLY on the same track about everything. Alec and Magnus ARE different people, and that was the whole point of the first date, back in 2x06, and the “EFFORT” they were engaging. ACCEPTANCE was the whole point of 2x07 on the other hand, when they both tried to overcome their old fears (for Alec overthinking and not following his instincts; for Magnus finding someone who doesn’t want anything in return) in order to move forwards. And this will be good as well: complete TRUST. Once they achieve that, they will finally understand where the other stands in specific situations and it will be easier to face future problems. That is the aim of a “healthy” fight followed by an honest discussion and peace: it is about knowing each other, completely.

Prompt: future fic: how Sana and Yousef really get together… hope you decide
to write it!
Chapter 2: Together
She arrived at 4pm sharp. He was already there,
sitting on the same place where they had talked a few weeks ago. As soon as he
saw her, he stood up, nervously fidgeting with his shirt. Sana approached him
with a serious expression. Yes, she knew now the truth, she knew he liked her
–at least that’s what Noora said- she knew why the kissed had happened, she
knew that he wasn’t with Noora. But that didn’t erase the fact that she had
been suffering almost three weeks about that, it didn’t erase the fact that
even though he liked her, he had kissed another girl instead of talking to her.
So Sana thought that would allow her to make that boy suffer a little bit while
having fun about it.
“Hey, thank you for coming” Yousef said
He looked like he was about to do the most
important job interview of his life. Sana almost felt bad for him and she
hadn’t even opened her mouth yet.
“Should we sit?” Yousef asked
“Don’t think that’s necessary”
“I have to tell you something important, it
might take awhile”
“You really don’t have to tell me anything. I
“You…know? What, what exactly do you know?”
“I know about Noora” she said crossing her arms on her
Yousef widened his eyes in surprise, he wasn’t
“Did she tell you?”
“She didn’t have to. I saw you.”
Yousef felt his heart pounding on his chest
“I saw you kissing Noora”
“Sana, I can explain”
“You don’t have to explain anything. I saw you kissing Noora and I also
know you met her on Sunday, I heard Adam and Mikael talking about it”
“What? No, no, you got it all wrong”
“You think I’m stupid?” Sana asked raising an eyebrow
“Of course not, but you misunderstood it”
“So you do think I’m stupid, great”
“I don’t think you’re stupid Sana. I just need you to let me explain
“So now you’re saying that I don’t let you talk, wow”
“No, this is all coming out wrong” Yousef said brushing his hair with his
fingers, a nervous manner he had.
“I’m telling you, Yousef, you don’t have to explain anything to me”
“I do, I do have to explain it to you. Just give me a chance”
“I already know what I need to know”
“Yousef, I know everything and nothing you say is going to change my
“Just hear my version, please, that’s all I’m asking” he said almost begging
looked at him, he really looked like he was suffering. As much as she was
enjoying the moment she thought maybe it was time to give him a rest.
“I already know that. I know that you kissed Noora because you thought I
didn’t like you. I know you stopped the kiss because you didn’t feel anything
about it. I know you met Noora on Sunday so you could tell her that you don’t
like her. And I know you told her you like me”
took a time to process all the information. He stood there, his mouth slightly
opened, blinking really fast repeating all the conversation on his head.
lip slowly curved into a big smile that ended with her laughing.
faen, Sana!” he said covering his face with his hands making her laugh
even harder “I thought you were pissed at me, why would you do that?”
“I just wanted to make you suffer a little bit” she said shrugging
“You’re so mean” he said shaking his head but smiling a lot more relieved.
“Hey, I’ve spent three weeks crying, you’ve only suffered like 5
minutes. I think it’s fair”
“You’ve been crying?” he asked “because of me?”
“It wasn’t just because of you, don’t get too cocky” she joked
“Sana, I’m serious”
“So am I, but that doesn’t mean we have to keep a straight face right
now. Yes, I’ve been crying but now I’m laughing, isn’t it nice?”
“It is. But I hate myself for making you suffer”
“Hey, like I said, it wasn’t just about you” she said taking a step closer.
“So Noora told you I like you…” Yousef said slightly blushing
“Is it true?” Sana asked hesitantly
“You really need to ask?”
“I don’t want to make assumptions anymore, I want to hear it from you”
“Okay, I, Yousef Acar, declare that I like you, Sana Bakkoush” he said solemnly
shook her head and rolled her eyes
“Wow, I tell you I like you and that’s your answer? Harsh”
“That was my answer at you being such a dork. My answer at you liking me
is this: I like you too, Yousef”
he said raising an eyebrow
going to make me say it, aren’t you?”
smiled and shrugged while Sana rolled her eyes again and sighed.
“I, Sana Bakkoush, declare that I like you, Yousef Dork Acar” she said with a smug smile
“Good enough” he said laughing
both stared at each other while smiling, it was their specialty.
“So…what does this mean?” Sana dared to asked
“What do you want it to mean?”
she asked glaring at him
“Okay, I’ll start. I want to be with you Sana, like properly be with
you.” He said taking a step closer
“You mean like….”
“I mean like dating”
“Sounds cool” Sana said nodding
“Sounds cool?” he said shaking his head, that girl was going to be the end of him.
“Yeah, I’d like to be with you” Sana said
“You mean like…” he imitated her
“Yes, I mean like dating”
“Sounds cool” he nodded
“Two things though” Sana warned
“First, you have to promise that we won’t make assumptions anymore, that
we will talk to each other before reacting. If we don’t do that I don’t think
this is going to work”
“I promise and I totally agree. What’s the second one?”
“We can’t tell anybody yet. Not until we know for sure that this…us…is
going to work. I don’t want to add more pressure than we already have”
“Okay, okay, I get it. We’ll tell them whenever you’re ready”
nodded, there was still one more thing she wanted to tell him, one thing that
may scared him away.
“Yousef…there’s one more thing” she said looking at the floor “I’m
not…I’m not like other girls…there’s stuff…there are certain things that I don’t…that
I won’t do…I mean…”
“Hey, hey, hey. Sana look at me” Yousef said understanding what she was
referring to. “Sana please look at me”
a deep breath and looked at his eyes feeling her heart beating faster and
“You don’t have anything to worry about. I’m not here because of that
stuff. All I want is to be with you, spend time with you, talk to you. You’ll
be the one putting the limits and I’ll respect them, I promise, you have
nothing to worry about. I would never do anything that could make you
“And what if…?” she said but didn’t end the sentence. What if he got tired of her?
“It won’t happen. I promise you.” He said slowly while looking at her eyes
making sure she’d understand it.
Ok, here’s my two cents on why I don’t understand people who think that telling the whole story of the American Revolution is “desanctification” (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, please refer to this article):
I do sort of understand where this comes from - we have a mythology about American exceptionalism that forms the cornerstone of our patriotism. We’re taught as children not an American history, but an American legend, about how a group of practically mythological Founding Fathers were brought forth on this continent through Manifest Destiny to invent democracy and make America a freedom-loving superpower. To doubt those legends is to doubt the greatness of our country, and thus ourselves. And that scares people. How can we be proud of ourselves if our country is flawed?
Look at George Washington. We, as children, are taught four things about him: that he said “I cannot tell a lie” after chopping down a cherry tree, that he crossed the Delaware, that he was our first president, and that he had wooden teeth.
Only two of those things are true, and only one, the last one, is negative in any way. Even then it’s not a true negative, more of a throwaway joke. We joke, but we never talk about the real effect that having no teeth would have on your life in the 18th century. How the constant pain from (not wooden) dentures would have effected you constantly. We also don’t talk about his many losses in battle, his fear of public speaking, or his conflicting views about slavery. Those things would truly make George Washington human.
The people who complain about revisionist history, I think, view the story as a zero-sum game. If a mistake or a character flaw of a historical figure gets mentioned, then that must be taking away from the good things they did. If time is given to talk about the experience of a minority figure, less time must have been taken to talk about a more typical figure. That’s where the “Won’t Someone Think of the Dead White Males” rhetoric comes from - we’re talking about them less (supposedly), and we’re talking about them less favorably, therefore the American public will no longer see their accomplishments, and America, as exceptional. If Washington isn’t sacred, then nothing is.
Me, I feel just the opposite. What good does it do to put this select group on a pedestal? If the founders were truly gods, sent down from Heaven to save us all, then what they did wouldn’t have been exceptional. And what lesson could we mortals learn from that, if we are so little in comparison? I much prefer my historical figures down on earth: they laugh, they cry, they insult each other, they oppress others, they make mistakes. A group of living, breathing, completely ordinary people were able to cobble together a new country and somehow make it function. How amazing is that? That’s the lesson we should be teaching each other: that if these ordinary citizens managed to work together to overcome impossible odds despite their differences and despite their flaws, then we can too.
Yuri on Ice interview translation - Pash! 2016/12 (p16-17)
This is an interview with Chacott’s Yuiko Sagiri that was published on Pash! Dec. 2016 issue. Chacott is a brand that mostly makes dance costumes/clothing/accessories, but they happen to create costumes for figure skating as well. She was in charge to come up with the designs for the original costumes appeared in the anime.
Usually I only post text, without images, and I was wondering what to do with this article, because it’s not as easy to understand without pictures. They have most of them on their blog too, but they’re all in different pages and it would have been a pain to link, therefore in the end I decided to include pictures taken from the magazine. Please understand that the pictures are only for reference and are not meant to be high quality scans (in fact I just took them with my phone and fixed them a little).
Since the post is heavier than usual because of the pictures I tried to use a cut for the first time. Maybe I should do it for long interviews as well…
***If you wish to share this translation please do it by reblogging or posting a link to it*** ***Re-translating into other languages is ok but please mention that this post is the source***
did ouma ever confess to saihara at some point? or did i misread something lmao
Not to Saihara per
se but rather in a scene about Saihara, where he’s by himself. Ouma directly
calls Saihara “the person he fell in love with” (suki ni natta hito) in a scene
in Chapter 4 that is entirely plot-relevant and unavoidable, making it a canonical
part of the story rather than something arguably optional like FTEs or the
bonus mode content.
To the anon who asked me to do the track by track for blurryface and commentary that I did for vessel, here you go!
Favorite lyrics: “death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit”
Commentary: This song like Ode to Sleep sets the tone for the entire album which is blurryface. It starts of quick and to the point, before breaking into a slow and deep chorus. Josh’s drumming is quick, hurried and aggressive while Tyler is pulling lyrics out quicker than usual. Also, anyone who knows this song well can only think of the infamous death drop that happens at live shows. In a sense, this is Tyler and Josh sharing with us that they are taking on their own demons and are not sure of what is to come. Can we save them? Can they save us? Who wins this battle? I do not think the answer is in this song or album, but it helps set the tone for the rest of the songs.
2: Stressed Out
Favorite lyrics: “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink, but now I’m insecure and I care what people think.”
Commentary: GRAMMY WINNING ARTISTS. This song became the song that got much attention and brought Tyler and Josh to win their first Grammy. No matter how many times I hear this song, I still love it just as I did the first time. It is a song that parents and kids can enjoy, a song that is incredibly honest about the concepts of growing up and pressures of society. Wanting to go back and be children, but having everyone around expecting you to be completely put together and making money. This song shows that sometimes it is necessary to go back and feel like a kid, because the weight and pressures of society and others can break us.
Favorite lyrics: “I’ve been thinking too much, help me”
Commentary: Another song that made it to the radio and has a pretty sick beat if I might add. When the song begins, you can already feel the energy that Josh is giving off as Tyler begins the first chorus. When I listen to this song, I think of the idea of taking my time. When I try to speed up and be the perfect person that I am, I end up falling apart and legit thinking too much. If I can take my time and try to enjoy the little “rides” in my life, I can and will become a happier human. Another song I love that out of nowhere you get Tyler screaming at you, but ending on such a soft note. Really love this one.
4: Fairly Local
Favorite lyrics: “Yo, you, bulletproof in black like a funeral, the world around us is burning but we’re so cold, it’s the few, the proud, and the emotional”
Commentary: As soon as this song kicks off, you feel the essence of blurryface and the first time I think Tyler and Josh come face to face with him/her/them. If any of you have gone to the live shows, you feel this vibe as Tyler emerges, Josh beginning his drumming. Something inside is coming alive not only in the guys, but also in all who listen to the song or hear it live or both. Tyler’s voice changes at some points, in multiple songs, almost as if it is blurry talking to us. It sends shivers down my spine every time, making me wonder if blurry is trying to talk to me and get into my head. While this song is not at the beginning or the end, it sets a great tone of uncertainty that has to arise in this album.
5: Tear in My Heart
Favorite lyrics: “Sometimes you gotta bleed to know you’re alive and have a soul”
Commentary: Okay but this is the cutest song I know of them next to Tyler’s cover of build me up buttercup. As many know this song is related to his wife, Jenna who makes an appearance in the music video. While this song has an upbeat drum style and vocals, the lyrics still hold true to the concept. Jenna leads Tyler to tell him the lyrics I love the most. The black that coats his hands and neck, she is not afraid to try to get it out and off him. Josh is the same with his red around his eyes. That even the clique is the tear in josh and tyler’s hearts when they need reassurance. We can all be each others person when it comes to those times of self doubt and our own blurry coming to life. Overall, this song is adorable and the concept behind it is beautiful.
6: Lane Boy
Favorite lyrics: “Regardless, all these songs I’m hearing are so heartless, don’t trust a perfect person and don’t trust a song that’s flawless”
Commentary: If you do not feel like getting up and dancing to this song or dancing to this at a stop light, we cannot be friends. I am just kidding, but really it has such a great beat. The lyrics speak volume to how Tyler and Josh want to stay who they are and not be lost by the common songs heard on the radio. They want to stay authentic to what they believe and never let the clique or themselves down. I can relate in the idea of staying true to who I am as a person and giving my best. I do not need to try to change who I am to be what others demand. I will not be a follower, I will be my own leader. I will not stay in my lane, I will follow my own path. This song has taught me that and Tyler and Josh kill it in this song as with the others.
7: The Judge
Favorite lyrics: “But I’m not good with directions and I hide behind my mouth, I’m a pro at imperfections and I’m best friends with my doubt”
Commentary: Halfway through the album and we get to this awesome song. JOSH DUN. If you do not understand this reference please listen to the song very carefully or ask me, it is awesome. The whoosh at the beginning and soft ukulele before Tyler’s vocals softly sing to you, it is sweet. Josh’s drumming is quick, but consistent and almost calming. One of the songs that I think is not as fast paced or rush, just calm. You do not feel blurry as much, as more of this is a plead to those who love you. You do not want them to think you have lost yourself in your demons, you want them to see you as you. Set you free of your demons, love you as you are. I love this song as it is upbeat and a change of pace and that each person can find a great meaning behind it.
Favorite lyrics: “Scared I’ll die of uncertainty, fear might be the death of me, fear leads to anxiety, don’t know what’s inside of me”
Commentary: I consider this one of the darker songs of the album, a quick change from the style of The Judge. I did not fall in love with this song at first, but have grown to love it. I always thought if they did a music video for this song, it would be them in the dark with only a couple candles burning to show some parts of their faces. The feeling you get from hearing Tyler saying “don’t forget about me” and how it almost feels like Josh is absent from this song. It is a song that probably would of not done as well as a single, just because it blends so cohesively with the album itself. Like on Vessel, this is a song I continue to listen to and understand the meaning behind it and my own interpretation.
Favorite lyrics: “Domingo en fuego, I think I lost my halo, I don’t know where you are, you’ll have to come and find me, find me”
Commentary: I really appreciate this song because it follows doubt and is a lead into track number 10. Tyler’s ability to control his speed as his sings this song is incredible and of course Josh keeps the beat and is able to change on a whim. The lyrics are deep and heartfelt, but the ones I picked seem to relate more to the idea of blurryface. Losing one’s halo, one’s grace and asking others to find them to me is the moment that blurry has taken over. Even if it is only for seconds or for a couple hours, days, weeks, months or years. Tyler is calling out to us that he has lost is grace and we have to find him. Sometimes it is going to be us who say we have fallen out of grace and need help. That we are not going to be taken down by our blurry, but just need extra hands.
10: We Don’t Believe What’s On TV
Favorite lyric: “What if my dream does not happen? Would I just change what I’ve told my friends?”
Commentary: YEAH YEAH YEAH! The drums take over this song and if any of you think otherwise, we cannot be friends. Just kidding, but seriously have you heard them? Tyler has so much energy in this song, you cannot feel the need to get up and dance. This song live in itself is such a beat, but the lyrics are so honest and real. What if they had not made it? Would Tyler still be who he was? What about Josh? What about all of us? Aren’t we glad they have come this far, yes we are. I think this is a song for those who may be unsure of their potential, do not give up and keep on going with what they love. Do not let anyone or anything try to prevent you from your ultimate goal of happiness.
11: Message Man
Favorite lyrics: “Please use discretion when you’re messing with the message man, these lyrics aren’t for everyone, only few understand”
Commentary: Another dark song that may not get as much recognition as it should on the album. I love the beat cause it’s low and fast and dark. Tyler is almost warning us that our blurry’s face tempt others and to be aware of what they can do. Not to mess with certain things and to try to work them through as best as we can. That as hard as it may be not to want to take on other’s blurry’s or issues, sometimes we have to let them work through it. Each one of us is capable of defeating our demons at times and it may involve just us and them.
Favorite lyrics: “Be the one, be the one, to take me home and show me the sun”
Commentary: This song is incredibly special to me, as many of you know I have the coordinates to Columbus tattooed on me. That is because Tyler and Josh are home to me and always will be. Those two started in Columbus with no plan B and have come so far. I could not be prouder and I feel like this song represents so much. It shows where their blurry’s were started, but also who has guided them along the way and where they will return too. No matter how big or how well known these two men become, they will always be the two happy boys from Ohio. Family, friends, and the entire clique are so proud of how far they have come.
13: Not Today
Favorite lyrics: “Oh, don’t you test me, no just because I play the piano doesn’t mean not I’m not willing to take you down, I’m sorry”
Commentary: This song stands alone on the album as it is right before the cinematic end of this emotional album. It never was sang live, it was never a song that I think was talked about much. I like it because as Tyler shares, do not be fooled by the beat because the song has powerful words. We also get to hear Josh place the trumpet and that is pretty amazing. I feel like everyone should listen to this song and find a special meaning for it. I like that it comes right before the song that puts the blurryface album to a question mark. I also love the lyrics I picked because it just makes me smile when Tyler says it.
Favorite lyrics: “I wanna be known by you”
Commentary: The end. What a perfect song to the supposed end of the blurryface album. I do not think this song ends blurry for Tyler or Josh, but rather leads us to the next era that they are preparing for. Tyler and his piano take over in this song, soft and broken. Josh’s drumming picks the pace up and before you know it we are at full volume. Whispers turn to screams that turn into whispers and the infamous last line that I love. This album takes you from start to finish on the journey these two men have taken and continue. Letting so many of us come to terms with our own issues and demons. I cannot wait to see how they incorporate blurry into the next era or take us to something completely new.
Thank you for recommending me to do this album! It took some time, but it was very much enjoyable!
I’ve noticed a lot of people are upset without realizing that all of the costumes are referential of the old game(s), and while people aren’t upset about Replicant’s costumes, people are getting really up in arms about Kainé’s so please for the love of everything, the costume is a nod back to what I’d call one of the greatest heroines in gaming, not just another excuse to put 2B in skimpy clothes. Thank u.
As a last note, this promo picture made me CRY because of the reference in the outfit. I lov this woman with every fiber of my being and I don’t want people to think that the outfit is just another thing. Its important.
