so i’m pretty sure Baby is autistic

like more sure than just about any other character i’ve ever seen. i just got back from my second viewing and now i’m more convinced than ever. evidence:

  • adherence to routine: baby still eats at the diner where his mom worked, and he still orders from the kids menu. the waitress said that he’d been coming there for as long as she’s worked there; baby has basically lived his entire life around that diner, and he hasn’t updated his routine in years because the routine brings him comfort.
  • delayed echolalia: a significant portion baby’s spoken dialogue is actually just him repeating things he’s heard before in other contexts. we all do this from time-to-time, everybody likes a good quote, but baby does it… a lot. like, way more than normal. he seems FAR more comfortable speaking in quotes than he does speaking off-the-cuff.
  • immediate echolalia: and he doesn’t always store quotes for later. sometimes he repeats them back immediately. this kind of parroting is something autistic children have been known to do to help them process what is being said, not realizing that their repetition is being taken as a response. when doc asks baby “are you in?” and baby repeats “am I in?” almost automatically, you can tell this is an exchange they’ve gone through many times, likely going all the way back to when baby was a kid. perhaps that’s how it started.
  • memorization - this goes hand-in-hand with echolalia; you have to remember quotes in order to repeat them, after all. but it goes beyond mere snippets of dialogue; baby is able to memorize extremely complicated plans and rundowns and repeat them verbatim after hearing them exactly once. he does this twice; once when doc is telling the crew the plan, and once when he goes into the post-office and sam gives him the rundown of the security.
  • hyperfixation: baby lives and breathes music. owns dozens upon dozens of ipods that he has clearly gone through the trouble of buying off other people, each of which is loaded with different songs for different occasions and each individual library of which he has memorized. has keyboards and turntables and other mixing tools to create his own music, has a huge case of tapes of his own stuff, and a wall of vinyl records he’s collected. choreographs his getaway driving to music. hell, choreographs his entire life to music, to the point where baby has to stop what he is doing to restart, rewind, or find a song multiple times over the course of the film, even when his actual life is in jeopardy.
  • sensory issues: constantly listens to music to drown out his tinnitus. for many people, the ringing from tinnitus is something they can get used to and ‘tune out’ so to speak. baby’s inability to do this suggests that either his tinnitus is more severe, or he has some form of sensory disorder that prevents him from ignoring unwanted stimuli, forcing him to override it with something else.
  • savant syndrome: there’s really no way around this; baby is goddamn driving prodigy. if he were a middle-age man, his skill would put him among the best in the world; the fact that he’s this good now, and that he’s been this good since he was an actual child puts him so far into the stratosphere that we can’t even see him anymore. like, sorry, kevin spacey, but it’s not baby’s personal playlist that makes him the best driver on the fucking planet; there is something else going on in that kid’s brain, and whatever it is, it ain’t normal.

add all of this to the fact that baby’s intense focus and quiet, seemingly emotionless demeanor makes his criminal associates suspicious of him to the point where various idiots accuse him of having ‘mental problems,’ being ‘not on planet earth,’ with one particularly dumb asshole even throwing the R-word at him, and I’d say at the very least you have a strong case for baby being anything but neurotypical.

hell yeah you are. i love my fast autistic son. 🚗

consider: the foxes take on a HoH recruit a couple years post canon. they have hearing aids and are oral, but the aids they have aren't that good because their parents couldn't/wouldn't pay for better, and sometimes they cut out. neil starts learning asl to be able to translate for/communicate with them at those times bc at this point it's pretty easy for him to pick up, and it's a new challenge (1/2)

(2/2) (the rest of the team tries too ofc because they don’t want this kid to be stuck in the dark and renee and dan are pretty good, but it’s not as easy for most of them, they didn’t have to grow up learning foreign languages just to survive). andrew mostly learns from proximity to neil, watching him practice and learning from context, and they discover it’s useful for them as well in the ways you were talking about in your first post -minyardjostenrivalry

oh man oh man oh man I love this you have no idea (also this got little longer than I originally meant it to be wowza)

  • so I’m making said recruit a dealer idk just roll with me on this
  • when they play they’re always usually in the middle(ish) of the court
  • kind of in the thick of it
  • even with hearing aids that work great it’s hard to keep up when there is a lot going on around you
  • and neil is oblivious to a lot of things but not exy
  • he notices and realizes all the other times he’s seen said recruit kind of lost in conversations/big groups
  • he doesn’t make a comment on it bc why point out the kid’s struggles?
  • he just immediately goes back to Fox Tower after that game/practice and starts learning asl basics
  • andrew sees and watches but doesn’t say anything about it
  • after a few nights it peaks his interest enough to ask
  • neil explains and andrew decides to learn
  • he doesn’t tell neil or anyone really
  • mostly he starts learning in case it becomes useful/necessary down the line
  • spoiler alert: it does
  • anyway neil learns a lot very quickly, especially one handed signs he can use quickly while holding his raquet on court
  • this works great and kinda catches on with the foxes
  • most of them know at least numbers up to 30 in asl, so they can reference players
  • no one can quite pick up languages like neil can though, so he’s the go to if the recruit needs something interpreted
  • mostly though the recruit can get by on their own but they really appreciate all the foxes trying to accommodate them
  • also i think it would be hilarious if when asl became another andreil™ thing if the foxes (nicky) would constantly ask the recruit what the two were saying
  • recruit is loyal to their new bro™ neil though
  • no snitching even though they may be a little bit traumatized after witnessing some questionable conversations
  • also i would like you all to consider neil and this new recruit shit talking people in asl right in front of them
  • imagine them both on press duty together
  • josten part 2: the sass you love this time with considerable less angst
I hear a patient verbally abusing one of my coworkers...

okay I have a question for anti-Otayuri people…

I’ve noticed that some of you ship Mila and Sara

Why is that ship okay, but Otayuri is not?

I know Mila is 18. But Sara is 22.

The girls have been skating competitively for years. I think it’s safe to say that they’ve probably known each other since before Mila was 18. Especially because they seem pretty close in the show. They’ve probably been friends for at least a few years, since Mila started skating in the senior division with Sara. Perhaps since Mila was 15/16 and Sara was 19/20.

Yall seem to have a problem with people aging up Otayuri. Or with them waiting for Yurio to turn 18. Like yall argue that Otabek would still be a predator for “waiting” because that would mean he had romantic/sexual intentions with Yurio from the start or something.

But Sara and Mila probably knew each other when Mila was still a minor. Why is it okay to ship them just because Mila is 18 now? When they probably knew each other when Mila was still a minor. So going by your logic, why is Sara not a predator as well for “waiting” for Mila to turn 18?

Like this is a legit question, I don’t understand your logic, please explain?

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

`I need no map,’ said Gimli, who had come up with Legolas, and was gazing out before him with a strange light in his deep eyes. `There is the land where our fathers worked of old, and we have wrought the image of those mountains into many works of metal and of stone, and into many songs and tales. They stand tall in our dreams: Baraz, Zirak, Shathûr.

`Only once before have I seen them from afar in waking life, but I know them and their names, for under them lies Khazad-dûm, the Dwarrowdelf, that is now called the Black Pit, Moria in the Elvish tongue. Yonder stands Barazinbar, the Redhorn, cruel Caradhras; and beyond him are Silvertine and Cloudyhead: Celebdil the White, and Fanuidhol the Grey, that we call Zirak-zigil and Bundushathûr.

`There the Misty Mountains divide, and between their arms lies the deep-shadowed valley which we cannot forget: Azanulbizar, the Dimrill Dale, which the Elves call Nanduhirion.’

`It is for the Dimrill Dale that we are making,’ said Gandalf. `If we climb the pass that is called the Redhorn Gate, under the far side of Caradhras, we shall come down by the Dimrill Stair into the deep vale of the Dwarves. There lies the Mirrormere, and there the River Silverlode rises in its icy springs.’

`Dark is the water of Kheled-zâram,’ said Gimli, `and cold are the springs of Kibil-nâla. My heart trembles at the thought that I may see them soon.’
