Thank you!! Wow this actually turned out to be way harder to explain than I thought and I’m still trying to figure out the best way but hopefully this helps a little:

On the left is just a sketch of what the dress looks like (at a ¾ view so you can see the side seam). On the right is my attempt to show how the underlap is added (outlined in red). It is basically a second dress front piece that I sewed into the side seams.

The bodice is lined and boned and the top of the red piece is handsewn to the bottom of that bodice foundation (which hits at just about the waist area) so that it doesn’t sag in the middle.

Does that make any sense at all?? I’ve totally confused myself now too trying to remember how I made it - when I actually made it it was pretty intuitive and I just kind of winged it adding and cutting the extra piece…
