We used the term whole-food, plant-based diet in Forks Over Knives because the film’s main experts were discussing not only eliminating or minimizing animal foods like meat, dairy, and eggs; but doing the same for highly refined foods, like bleached flour, refined sugar and oil. Vegan in Crete

September last year we went to Crete for our honeymoon. We did choose Crete because we did not want to fly long hours and we wanted sun and beautiful nature. I was a bit nervous because my reference with Greece was a lot of fish, meat and diary products. I decided to take with me some crackers and vegan pate for in the morning. Also I realized that there would be a lot of fruit so I knew I would be OK.

We stayed at a very nice idealistic place called Villa Ippocampi in Koutouloufari. Nikos and his Dutch wife Lydia made us feel very welcome. Their area is a paradise! We had great weather so we of course did go to the beach and swim in the pool of our apartment. We also rented a car and we went sight seeing almost everyday. The people are so friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed . It made me relax and think about future plans. That’s what I love about holidays. I imagine myself doing all the things that I love. The things that I am passionate about like, singing, cooking, veganism, meeting up with friends and family. Isn’t that what’s life about? Living your dream? Doing the things you really love? 

I didn’t have any problem at all with finding dining places where I can eat vegan dishes. Fruit was everywhere and very delicious. Crete has also a lot plant food dishes. I eat a lot of beans, pasta, salads, lentils and even a vegan burger with potatoes fries. The cook is very happy to transform a dish into a vegan dish. You just have to ask and they will help you. Also good to find out is that the food is very cheap in Crete. I think we paid somewhere between 20 and 30 Euro for everything. That is including a starter, main course, dessert and drinks. What really impressed me was in every place we went to the owner did something extra. They gave us a free drink or a free dessert. They really enhanced our expectations. You can think and say ‘well that’s all part of the deal, they need customers’. But think about this: don’t you think that in our society they need more customer focus? Where I live we thrive for more and everything must go fast. When I go out for a drink or for food then I usually don’t get a smile from the waiter. It’s a machine that’s running. Almost no interaction at all. What is happened?

We definitely had a great time in Crete. The landscape and panorama is heavenly. People enjoy life and the little things. Crete has all the ingredients for a successful holiday.  Viva Crete!

Whenever I “fall off the wagon” one of the first things I do is to start making green smoothies again, consistently. It’s easy to fall into a habit of eating fast easy convenient food that are more processed than you want them to be. But sooner than later you feel it and that’s when you gotta stop with the “convenient” foods. It’s actually not convenient because you don’t feel optimal and then you compensate by eating more easy fast crap or drink more caffeine…☕️ It’s a vicious circle if you jump out of the merry go round!
