A light, airy feeling is gained by the addition of this planter box within a stair railing. Before this remodeling, a solid railing kept sunlight from passing through the stairway. The new stairway has ample light to keep plants healthy, blocking the view of the bathroom from the dining area below. To maintain an open feeling from both below and above, the railing is placed low. The handrail is floated above the planter, and the back base slopes in to minimize the mass of the planter in the small hall. Planter’s walls-plaster over wood framing-contain a sheet-metal box with a drain to the outside concealed in the wall.
