Justin’s Pixel Art Exercise 16.02.10

Here’s an exercise I did with the NES palette and restrictions. It’s the head of Deacon from Wings of Aetos animated in an eight-directional rotation with a resolution of 16x16 color count of 3 plus transparency.

Deacon’s epic pompadour gives him a silhouette that’s easy to make out even at low resolutions, but suggesting a chrome shine and maintaining consistent detailing proved to be an enormous challenge with such a low color count. It took a lot of work, but these came out amazing.

Overall, this sort of exercise is excellent not only for practicing consistent spriting over several angles, but also for learning to build palettes from a fixed color set. If you’ve done rotations previously, try them with additional restrictions and elevate the exercise to a new level.

So which palette do you prefer?

I really really suck at making up side/background characters for things and there’s a non-canon story I’ve been DYING to do with Pixel Wing on this blog. So, if you’d like to be in it, please send me your ref for your pony, be it through submission, ask or fanmail and you may see yourself in my upcoming comics! I have already planned for Gamer and Haze to be in it (it’s going to take place in Haze’s bar).

Also, if you could reblog this and pass it on, it would help me out a lot! Thanks!

Hey everyone, look!

A reference sheet for Pixel Wing (my main OC).

I made the neck a little too long on the front view.

I like drawing her kind of anthro but anyone who wants to draw her can do it any way they want as long as they remember her ears are always down and wings are always closed.

I had a hard time drawing the back of her mane from the straight back view so I did a profile view too.

Hope this helps!

I Hate to Ask You All

But I need a bit of help. I have been invited to go to the Midwest Media Expo, April 25-27, but I’m short on cash. At the door, the tickets are $50 for the weekend, plus me and three friends are staying in a hotel and splitting the bill 4 ways.

Here’s where you come in: I hate to ask for donations but with no hope of finding a job very soon and my attempts at kicking off commissions crashing, it’s looking to be my only option. Obviously, there is no obligation to donate anything, but if you could get the word around, that would help me a lot. If possible, I’d love to see some of you there too! I’ll post my Donate button on my blog.

Thanks so much for taking your time to read this at the very least.
