I absolutely love how the night version of this background turned out! It looks like it could be perfectly still water, or a mirror.
I will briefly describe how I made this in GameMaker using surfaces which are really awesome to mess with.
I start with the dark background color then I draw the stars on by using a particle system. The stars are actually just randomly burst all over with a few concentrated patches of extra stars. Then I overlay the pink glow by drawing a gradient rectangle and messing with the blend mode. Finally, I alternate between a layer of land and a layer of fog with an additive blend mode. This whole thing should be drawn onto a surface which I then draw normally onto the screen. Then I draw a copy of the surface but I flip this one upside-down and blend it with a bluish color to get that darker tint on the reflection.
If anyone really wants more details on how I made this or anything else then please feel free to ask me!
Ah, VHS, the technology that will never die in the hearts of kids growing up in the 80s and 90s. Early Sunday mornings, waking up to see He-Man, playing videogames … all that good nostalgia. It was easy to dream of playing games that looked like our favorite animated shows, looking at game adverts and projecting all those cool illustrations onto crude ZX Spectrum and C64 pixels. It was all the same in a 10-year-old’s eyes.
Narita Boy feels like all of those feelings compressed into one, and it’s even more powerful in motion:
It’s just a concept for now, but it’ll become reality by the end of 2018 (or well, you know, sometimes after that) since it’s been successfully funded on Kickstarter.
There’s still time to get in on the action though, this being the last day of the campaign and all. Go check it out here.
Started working on this custom lighting shader tonight. Still got some kinks to work out – it’s not rendering perfect pixels right now and I might add some dithering or something later – but I thought it was a nice start.
It’s been a hot minute. I’m not completely satisfied with this one, the clouds still look off in so many ways to me, i’m happy with how the castle part came out though. (it’s hard to get those paint strokes to translate well, will work on that)
Sooo @taovol posted a shance apocalypses au were lance and shiro knew each other before it, but after meeting up later, shiro doesn’t remember who lance is and is also super cold and i drew a thing for it kek
I just pictured lance sitting next to shiro as everyone’s eating by the fire and lance is all like “ Shiro!! I wanted to say thank you for saving my ass back there! You don’t know how great it is to see someone familiar that’s alive for once!”
and shiro just gives him this cold blank expression
“You’re welcome. Go rest…” only for lance to look at him confused like what happened to the shiro i knew???
