photoshop graphic tutorial

Hello graphic makers!! You’re probably aware that there is a huge problem on tumblr with whitewashing. Or maybe you’re not. As a predominantly disney-based blogger, the whitewashing I personally see are from the disney fandom, so I’m going to use screencaps from those movies to show you several quick techniques so you’ll see just how easy it is to have your pretty bright and pastel colour palettes and not whitewash characters of colour.

Gif Tutorial

So I was asked by a couple anons to do a tutorial on how I make my gifs and now that I’m done with exams I decided to do it. This is the first tutorial I’m making so I hope whatever I say makes sense to those who are interested in it. And before I start explaining I’d like to say that this is the regular method I use to make my gifs and it’s something I ended up with trying many tutorials I found online throughout the years. So if you find any similarities with other gif tutorials that’s probably why. I would also like to remind you that the settings I use always change with each scene and lighting so if you want to use it, you’ll need to adjust them for every gif differently.

So I’ll be explaining how to go from this:

to this:

Or how to make this (which is basically the same)

Here’s a video tutorial of how I made this reversing ghost fade aardwolf gif:

dedicated to freethepoets (check her out!)

Okay, this is basically compiled from maybe 20-30 different sources, so there’s a lot of info here. one hella big masterpost.  Even though there’s so many, I have personally checked each link to make sure it works, so you shouldn’t have to worry about that. Note: if marked with *, it’s digital/tablet art most likely. This is a really long post, so look under the cut. Follow for more master posts and references!

A lovely anon requested I make a tutorial for how I made the gifs from this gifset. I decided to create a new gif that mimicked the style of the gifset so I could take those reading the tutorial through the complete process. All you need is adobe photoshop, a basic level of knowledge of the program, and patience!

Could you do a graphic tutorial for/post/120855259626/throne-of-glass-by-sarah-j-maas?

I’ve never done a graphic tutorial before so I hope this helps. I’m assuming you have basic knowledge with PS6 because that’s what I use. For this graphic we’re going to use the polygon lasso tool and marquee tool so I hope you’re familiar with those.

Hi um I used your cutting out the background from an image tutorial and it's not really working out for me because the persons hair is kind of all over the place. How do I get rid of the background without making her hair look horrid?

Hi! So, I’ve only ever talked about this once which was in my pastel hair tutorial, but it’s definitely worthy of its own tutorial. We’ll make it a mini-tutorial, though. And of course, it’s under the cut. (:

Line Art Tutorial

quick and shtty tutorial for @frenchfriesdippedinkpop but i wanted to finish this for her & make it public for whoever wants this

first, open up whatever photo you want to use, and I couldn’t find one fast enough, so I’m working with this one of Kyungsoo (if you don’t have Photoshop, any other online photo editor should be fine, experiment!)

Next, you’re going to create 2 layers. The first layer is going to be a simple white layer and the second is going to be a transparent layer for us to actually trace on. The white layer is going to be easier for you to track your progress and see how you’re doing so far. But make sure it’s in this order (i never name my layers tbh)

when you start tracing, make sure you hide the white layer so you can see your background image

Then you’re going to take your paint brush and set it to 1 (or around 1-5, see how well it works out for you.) Then, I preferably set the opacity to 80%, but you can set it lower or higher, depending on your preference. I personally prefer it to not be too dark.

Now you can begin tracing! It’ll be easier if you have a mouse or a pen tablet for line arts. A tip I like using is to use the shift key while making little lines around the outline I’m doing. Shift will make our lines straight, and if you’re around a curved area, do it in little dots/strokes so it will trace curved.

Here’s what mine looks like so far (except my computer was being glitchy and everything kept messing up and I was being really lazy. This isn’t the best at all!) But from experience, using the shift method is way better than attempting to free-hand it .. except if you’re actually good at that, then by all means, go ahead.

In all honestly, I gave up on the Kyungsoo one, so here’s one I did a while ago of Luhan’s Harper’s Bazaar cover. So it should be completed, and you can make it as complex or as simple as you want. I usually don’t outline the face nor spend too much time on the hair, I just draw little strokes. But you can do the wrinkles of the clothes if you want. I usually do.

Now we can color it. You can leave it blank if you’d like, but I usually color in the clothing. First, I use the eyedropper tool to grab at the color of the article of clothing I’m doing and then use the paint bucket to fill it in. Set the opacity to 50% or what you prefer. Then begin to color in the clothes.

Now it should look like this. Then, if you’d like to amp it up a bit, add a background. I usually use backgrounds of buildings.

The end result should look something like this! (You should have more layers, but I had this saved as one, so)

I hoped this helped. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions!

How to Properly Blur the Background of an Image in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we’re gonna learn how to blur the background of a photo. This is useful to know if you want to make the subject in the foreground pop, eliminate distracting elements in the background, or put text over the image.

I’m gonna use this image of cute puppy Sam because it’s adorable, and because blurring the background would make it easier to focus on the adorable golden retriever in the foreground. This image is a particularly good candidate because there are multiple faces in the background, and faces are especially distracting (because your eye is drawn to them).
