photo prayer

Young girls gather around a local well as they collect water for their families.

Will you pray today for these young girls and so many others like them? Pray that they will have the opportunity to attend school and skills training courses so that they can break the cycle of poverty in their families.

Here. Here you are.

You learned that your blog—this one—is exactly 6 years old today. You feel like you’ve come a long way somehow. You packed a bag, some water, and tied on comfortable shoes 6 years ago and today here you are, making a momentary arrival at last, maybe a little sunburned and unshaved, definitely more full by the things you’ve seen and done. These last 6 years feel like a very particular 6 years of life, surely dissimilar to a languid late-in-life 6 years you might expect to encounter later. But who knows? You don’t. All that’s for certain is that tomorrow you set out again. Toward 7? That’s how it works. One second to the next. A lot of seconds bending into hours and days. A lot of breathing, a lot of the inevitable changing as time keeps flowing.

Mohamed Gharib, a 25-year-old economics student, prays before attempting to leave Greece, in a 2-bedroom apartment housing sometimes as many as 35 Syrian refugees in Athens, Greece. Like an increasing number of Syrians, Mohamed chose to travel over land, by foot and car, via Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary, and Austria, all the way to Germany.

After floods displaced these boys from their homes, they relish access to clean water brought by aid workers.

Today, please remember children like these in your prayers. Pray especially for those who do not yet have access to clean water, nutritious food and sturdy shelter.

Senior Pastor Sharon Ferguson leads her congregation in song during Sunday’s evening service. About half of the church – operated by LGBTI clergy for a primarily LGBTI community – is comprised of Ugandan asylum seekers. This is part of an ongoing #pulitzercenter project on LGBTI asylum seekers in the UK, They Are Here Because You Were There.

A young boy receives free treatment at an HIV clinic in India.

Today, please pray for the more than 2 million children across the world currently living with HIV, most of whom contracted it from their mothers before they were even born. Pray for access to treatment and increased prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

When Sokarn was born with a cleft lip, his mother worried about his future, and the shame and teasing he would receive from his neighbors and peers.

Thankfully, Sokarn was offered corrective surgery free of charge to his family. But there are still so many children in developing nations who can’t afford the corrective procedure. Today will you pray for increased access to the proper medical care for these children?

None has the right to be worshiped but You (O Allah)…

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

None has the right to be worshiped but You (O Allah), Glorified (and Exalted) are You. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers. (Quran 21:87)
