“You can do it! Keep taking another step!” My book Urban Encouragements is an Art book that also cheers you on with motivational writings. My proposed book is based on my 2014 Photo-A-Day project in which I combined writings to my daily iPhone photography of San Francisco (above images).
What everyone really needed each day, I decided, was unconditional encouragement toward whatever dream they have, or through any struggle they faced. As I posted my 365 daily photos to Facebook/Instagram/Tumblr I also included 2-3 sentences of motivational thought inspired by the image I posted.
The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with friends/followers (over 1K on Instagram/User name: “melips”) commenting that they saw San Francisco in a new way, through my photography, and that my writings helped them as they went through whatever challenge they had in their lives.
I believe Urban Encouragements would make a perfect new Chronicle Books Art book, since it appeals to the eye, while also helping to nourish the soul.
Thank you for reading my book proposal! I am also tagging selections of the individual daily entries as example pages of Urban Encouragements as part of my submission.
Last year for San Diego Comic Con I did cosplay for the first time and it was def an interesting experience.
It all started when I painted a couple of mini ballerina WonderWomans for fun and after I finished, I thought it would be pretty cool to actually make a real costume based off my painting.
I’ve been dancing ballet for most of my life and it was very important for me to make this costume look legit as if I could dance right on stage with it! :)
I ordered a custom ballet bodice and sewed on notions from Britex Fabrics in SF. I ordered an inexpensive fluffy tutu off Etsy and sewed star notions on the fabric. A gold rope tassel made my “lasso of truth,” I dyed a pair of my old pointe shoes red and switched out my pink satin ribbons for some awesome red and metallic silver ones! My bulletproof bracelets are doubled silver on gold filigree cuffs from Forever 21 and I hot glued another star notion to that. I chose my favorite tiara off a store on Amazon and sewed another red star notion to complete my costume.
This was such a fun project-I may have to do something else ballerina-themed sometime soon. :)
