Eva set the table, butterflies in her stomach. Gage was taking a day or two to scan the surrounding area for any signs of his son. Jacob was on call and Emily was taking time for herself with a couple of friends that she’d made through her flower shop. Before she’d left, she’d given Eva and Phillip a somewhat stern reminder about behaving while the grownups were gone. They’d promised they would and waved goodbye with Willie.
Now, as Eva placed their food on the table, she couldn’t keep back a smile. She and Phillip played Mommy and Daddy with Willie when they were home alone. It was their little secret and they relished it. She walked to the living room. “Dinner’s ready.”
