perpetual distress

lotus-eater: part 1

Summary: Maka should have known nothing good could come from making big life decisions on too little sleep. When she breaks her own promise and sings to Soul on his birthday, will this slip up bring them closer, or will her secret break their bond? modern siren au. Alsooo be ready for asexuality talk! c:

this was supposed to be a valentine’s day oneshot for @soundofez but now it turned into a multi-part thing that’s very late, as per usual, but it’s here now (and on ffn and ao3)! shoutout to @professor-maka , @the-brightest-fell , and @thefishywitchy for the support and eyes and patience :)

In the four am serenity, a solid blackness stares at them through the small window above the sink while a surreal yellow light surrounds them from above. It heightens everything, from the content exhaustion between them to the mess they’ve created. Spots of flour blanket the things Maka loves most - the smooth marble surfaces of the Evanses’ kitchen, her best friend’s fingers, the soft cotton of his shirt, and the curve of his eyebrow.

Even her lashes are coated with it. Flashes of white flutter in and out of her vision as she blinks and screws up her face at his request.

In response, Soul leans back to rest his elbows on the counter, the dollop of pink frosting she had painted over his dimple moving with his sheepish grin. “That’s my one wish. For you to sing me ‘happy birthday’.”

Instinct means Maka echoes him without thinking - leaning forward to stay close, hands splayed on either side of him for balance. They’re in sync, one never too far behind the other, but what numbs Maka’s mind right now is the view from here. Normally he towers over her, but at the moment he’s perched on the bar stool, ethereal in her shadow as she hovers over him, and it’s both intoxicating and humbling.

The sleep in his eyes is hypnotic.

“I don’t sing,” she says.

Kim cutting her hair symbolizes her turn in character. She realizes how shallow and terrible she has been and changes herself. Letting go of her hair is her destroying her past self and starting over as a new person. She still carries a lot of baggage with her and does not like the person she was.

This version of Kim is very independent, much like Kimberly in the MMPR TV show before she started dating Tommy. Before becoming a perpetual damsel in distress, she took on monsters by herself. In the movie, there was a deleted scene where Kim kisses Jason. The kiss was taken out because it did not advance her character arc. She had several subtle and not so subtle romantic moments with Jason. Yet, she remains a self-possessed woman as opposed to becoming another character’s means of glorification. Her romance with Jason is based on equality. A relationship where each person is allowed to be awesome is much healthier than a one-sided relationship.

sorry for spamming so much tonight but one of my favorite lines is “Men caused the Valar much grief, most of all Manwë” and goes on to describe how Melkorish they are and EVERY TIME I laugh because I can imagine Manwë coming upon the Atani and being like “… ah.” And ever after any time he has to deal with Men he just has this LOOK.

And just, I imagine he’s with the Atani and one of them knocks over a vase and it shatters and he has that LOOK again and is like “so it begins.” Just perpetually stressed that they’ll… Be like his brother.

I think I’ve got to be honest. I’m really scared to go back to my writing, I haven’t worked on sky pirates in like 4 or 5 months and while I still love the story and feel like it’s important I’m worried I’m doing it all wrong and feel like there are things i need to change or fix before I can go back to actually writing the story
And just. I dunno. it’s daunting to go back, I don’t know that I have it in me anymore. i feel like the story is bigger than I am and I can’t do it justice
and i keep feeling like i’m getting closer to going back to it but i never quite get there because it’s just so much

Maybe not exactly fluffy, but I'm in a very Ghost Mood: Cassian is an extremely serious paranormal researcher (with K2 as his cynical assistant). He comes across Bodhi, a perpetually distressed medium who's both afraid of the dark side of the spirit world, but also wants to help the lost sould that flock to him, and so can't decide for a long time whether to try and shut down his ability, or to train and get better at it. After he decides on the latter he comes across Cassian.

Oooh I like this a lot. I’m always down for talk of ghosts! And I’m laughing about Kay as the cynical assistant.

Heads up Tena, Lily Peet (formerly Bhaalspawn) is planning to do a video on PinkiePony soon. Also, at the same time Lily Peet attacked Ask Princess Molestia, she was writing my little pony rule 34.

Ugh.  They really just won’t let it die, will they?  It’s been what…almost three YEARS now?  How pathetic and desperate are these people??  Her cronies will do anything they can to try to keep her relevant, even when everyone else has long since moved on.  If she’s not attacking people and making a mockery of activism, nobody gives a single fuck about Pinkiepony besides her bootsniffing handmaidens.  If Lily Peet has any kind of a brain, she’d think twice about dragging this out, lest her own transgressions (actually pretty damning, and for which there are mountains of evidence) be exposed.

It just goes to show that it was never about upholding any form of moral decency, or caring about any “feelings” besides those of Pinkiepony.  It’s always been about attacking others while pretending to be a victim, because she found out how much easier it is to get attention that way, rather than actually be someone interesting enough to be worth paying attention to.

It’s astounding how thoroughly emotionally manipulative she is.  The sad part is, I still want to believe that she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it.  I’m not sure how to feel about her as a person, but part of me still wants to give her the benefit of the doubt.  Either way, the hold she still manages to have over this small handful of people (such as Lily Peet) is honestly frightening, and they’re all so far gone that they’re completely unable to recognize it as manipulation.  It’s an extremely unhealthy relationship.

Once again, I urge others to look at the kind of psychological manipulation used by cult leaders, and take note of the similarities.  This is not at all an exaggeration–it’s the exact, same type of behavior.  It’s something I’ve come to be very familiar with while studying forensic psychology, and the mentality of cults.  We can only hope that it won’t get to a point where either she’s put in danger because of their obsession with her, or her followers are further taken advantage of by her.  It wouldn’t take much for her to unlawfully fleece them out of thousands of dollars if she really wanted to.  Just look at what happened with Miss Pennsylvania.

I’m not sure what to make of any of these people anymore, except to feel sorry for them, and hope they can eventually live their own lives instead of trying to piggyback on someone else’s, as well as not hanging their supposed “appeal” on being a perpetual “damsel in distress”.  It’s not healthy for any of them.  Remember:  These aren’t inherently “bad” people.  They’re just misguided, and in search of a way to feel “important” in this crapsack world.  Tumblr gave them a form of “power” they’ve never experienced before, and we all know how power easily corrupts a person, and can turn even the best of intentions sour.

Maybe the plastic baby actually was evil.

It had cried for the rest of the night after he had gotten a long ten hours of sleep and for that he was immensely grateful.

Alfred, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky, having only managed a less-than-comfortable two hours.

“I’m never having kids.” The jock decided on the way over to his own house, staring at the plastic toy with something akin to disbelief and mistrust. It was quiet.

For now.

again this theme song is perfect. everything is perfect, i have such high hopes and happiness just from this theme song. It captures the essence of the series so well and like…they get it. The people behind Crystal clearly GET it, just from this theme song. And that is all that matters.

and I find it completely hilarious that Mamoru shows up for the lyrics that are like “hi we don’t need you”.

like seriously the lyrics are like “yeah we don’t need this boy for protection he is here to look pretty and cheerlead, our supportive little buddy, enjoy”

(in fact that HAPPENS TWICE. He showed up just before the “we fight alone, who cares about the prince” lyrics too OH MY GOD…)

Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner: Sansa's Out to 'Eliminate the Enemy'

Hell hath no fury like a Stark woman imprisoned, raped, orphaned scorned.

Game of Thrones‘ upcoming sixth season will find Sophie Turner‘s perpetual damsel in distress Sansa taking a page from Emily Thorne’s red Sharpie’d playbook. “All of this injustice has happened to her the past five seasons,” shares the actress. “Now it’s about her getting revenge on people who have completely destroyed her life right from the beginning. [Season 6] is about her — step by step — trying to eliminate the enemy.”

She will likely get an assist from Alfie Allen’s Theon, who was last seen at the end of Season 5 escaping Ramsay’s (Iwan Rheon) clutches with Sansa in tow. “This is the season where she’s starting to turn things around and people are starting to rally for her,” previews Turner. “She’s trying to get people to listen to her. She’s building a group of trusted people that will help her get what she wants, which is — ultimately — revenge.”

Game of Thrones returns Sunday, April 24, at 9/8c on HBO.

okay guys what's your favorite Mamoru kidnapping

ulitmate “Mamoru is kidnapped” screenshot

For most hilarious: Definitely the episode where HE GOT KIDNAPPED ON USAGI’S BIRTHDAY like

he got her a cursed birthday present

was really upset about it and like “i’m so sorry i’ll protect u!!”

but instead ended up being kidnapped and trapped in a block of ice like Captain America a mamorusicle

and Haruka and Michiru legit tried to convince Usagi not to save him “well if he was trying to be protect you would he want you to risk your life to get him back? think of it logically”

And Usagi was like “well that is logical but also have you considered i don’t care”

And later he was like “I’m sorry I ruined your birthday Usagi” and Usagi was like “AW IT’S OKAY”

Best kidnapping in the manga was definitely R though because Usagi got kidnapped and Mamoru was like “OMG I’LL SAVE YOU” but instead…he got kidnapped and brainwashed…and was literally like “USAGI I WISH YOU WERE HERE” and she had to free herself..and then go fight him…he was the opposite of helpful…

I also liked in the musicals when he was kidnapped the first time like they literally tied him up to a cross TUXEDO MASK DIED FOR OUR SINS

OR during the Dracula musicals when he was turned into a vampire but the Senshi were too busy singing to EVEN NOTICE.

Don't you find it annoying that Old Xian keeps doing the same thing with Jian Yi & Zheng Xi? At least with HT & GS we have some development but the other two NEVER talk. How would you like Old Xian to develop their relationship in the next chapters?

Honestly, I never even noticed this until someone pointed it out to me after the release of the last chapter – ie. that Jian Yi is this perpetual damsel in distress that needs saving and protecting. Perhaps he’s just pandering to Zhengxi’s own protection complex, enabling him to feel like he’s looking after him so that he can feel better/some self-worth or something. Idk. It’s probably just a trope that Old Xian has fallen into.

I’m not sure about the not talking thing, though – they definitely interact, and I think the past few months of updates have actually all been over the same day lmao, so it’s not too unlikely that if they’re not seen as talking it’s just because they’re having a quiet day or something. (Had school, went to the bar together, got drunk, had the Jian Yi sexual advance thing, He Tian’s brother turned up, had the scene outside the apartment where Zhengxi promised to protect him, and now it’s the next day – train station, walk to school, mini fight with He Tian – and now it’s Sports Day or something.) Literally it’s been the same day since at least April. Maybe even March. (I think when the girl confessed to Zhengxi and the whole school board love letter thing happened that was the same day too?) Not to mention all the He Tian x Mo Guan Shan scenes in between. Zhengxi only just took off the bandages from his fight with Mo Guan Shan on the day we’re currently on! Craaaazy.

But you’re right that their interaction is the same: Zhengxi doesn’t show Jian Yi attention, Jian Yi gets stroppy, Zhengxi tries to get his attention/pander to him, Jian Yi takes this the wrong way, Zhengxi acts physically violent, Jian Yi apologises and/or cries, Zhengxi tells him it’s okay (even though it’s not, really, and Jian Yi can’t keep doing the same shit), and then they go back to being BFFs. Repeat.

Don’t get me wrong, I love them. I think half the problem is that the timeframe we’re dealing with is so fucking minute that it almost makes it impossible for any dramatic change in characterisation/relationship interaction. Which is why, you know, credit to Old Xian for what she’s achieved in like 24 hours with He Tian x Mo Guan Shan lmao. But their relationship is new, so quick changes/developments are expected. Jian Yi’s and Zhengxi’s is years old – would we expect the same sudden developments there? (Okay, kind of, because in this time we’ve had Jian Yi confess and almost unveil is sexuality, and they’ve taken further steps in their friendship in going to each other’s houses, spending more time together, etc.) But still. Keeping the timeframe in mind is super important.

What would I like to see? Hmmmm.

Less of the damsel in distress. Before I didn’t even really notice it, but now that I do, Jian Yi showing that he’s not this weak, feeble thing that can’t defend himself at all would be good. Making someone a ‘victim’ does not just mean that they’re an interesting person. Like, give us a valid reason why Zhengxi, a pretty astoundingly decent guy, would want to spend his time with Jian Yi. Because yeah he’s annoying and erratic and prone to being moody, so what is it that draws Zhengxi to him and/or makes him love him? I would love to see Jian Yi’s strengths and qualities revealed, and some realisation from Zhengxi that this is why he’s his best friend. (A bit like the scene where he jumped off the bridge for his phone lmao. That kind of wildness of just doing something for Zhengxi. Even if it was dangerous…) And this is why he thinks he could love him back. I want his feelings to develop because he sees in Jian Yi something worth being in love with, and not just because Jian Yi forces/projects his own feelings onto him.

Which prompts my wish that Jian Yi stops being such a dick. You’re hurting Zhengxi, Jian Yi. And you see that. And you have a head and autonomy so stop saying you ‘can’t control it’ or whatever. That just makes you look base and stupid. Treat Zhengxi like he treats you – with respect, and kindness. Prove him wrong. Surprise him. Show him that you’re more than you’ve been recently.

I’m putting a lot on Jian Yi here to do the work, but honestly, it seems like his turn. It was Zhengxi that took him out for his birthday to the hill, Zhengxi that took them to the restaurant, Zhengxi that invited him over to his house, Zhengxi that carried him drunk back to his apartment.

I want their friendship to seem like a balanced thing that is fair and kind, because I think that’s the environment/culture in which Zhengxi could grow to love him, where he’s sure and safe and confident in his affections for Jian Yi. He’s much softer than we think he is, I think.
