What Our Bones Are Made Of

1. Periosteum

  • the fibrous membrane which coats the outside of the bone
  • this membrane is rich with blood vessels and nerve endings
  • it ends at the end of the joint area or where ligaments and tendons insert themselves

2. Endosteum

  • a microscopic membrane underneath the periosteum
  • coats the outer layer of compact bone tissue
  • extremely strong membrane

3. Connective Tissue impregnated with hardening substances such as calcium and phosphorous.

4. Spongy Tissue

  • found on the inside of the bone
  • elastic bone tissue
  • permeated with bone marrow
  • red- where cells are constantly splitting
  • yellow- rich in fat
