Bob Barker offers to fund relocation of Toronto Zoo elephants
Former Price is Right host Bob Barker has offered to fund the relocation of three African elephants from the Toronto Zoo to a California sanctuary.

“I do not want the transition of the elephants to be hampered in any way,” Mr. Barker said in a statement published online by the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). “I want them to have the most efficient and humane transition to their new home… I said this would not cost the city a penny and I want to assure them it won’t.” (Photo: Larry Wong/Postmedia News)

These photos are part of an online series we did at the  Exploratorium called Driven: True Stories of Inspiration.

This episode is called “Big Love”, and is all about PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society), which is an animal sanctuary founded by former Hollywood animal trainer Pat Derby and her partner, Ed Stewart, in 1984. What started as a small space intended only to care for Pat’s own retired animals has become one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the world, and a very unique way of life for Pat and Ed. In this show, we focus on the unique relationship they maintain with the 8 elephants in residence.

California moves toward ending use of bullhooks on elephants

“It’s time that the state prohibits this inhumane practice,” said Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, arguing that the use of the pointed hooks is cruel to the animals and dangerous to handlers if an elephant rebels. The bill was sought by the Humane Society of the United States and the Performing Animal Welfare Society. Keepers use a long pole with a soft tip as a target to draw the elephant in the desired direction, with a treat used to reinforce behavior. //–> Daily Journal Quick Poll What are you doing for Memorial Day?
