Patti Smith, 1976, by Claude Gassian. “I was just discovering Patti Smith’s masterpiece album Horses. At that time I was listening to it all day long. So it was a real privilege, and one of my first important sessions, to accompany Patti when she visited Jim Morrison’s grave at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.”
‘I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china.’ Oscar Wilde born September OCTOBER 16th, 1854
I have been lucky to visited Pere Lachaise cemetery twice so far in my lifetime, this photo was taken in the early 1990s. This is before the lipstick and the mass graffiti and the enclosure erected in 2011.
I was able to touch his tombstone and whisper to him my sadness and anger at what he had had to endure simply for being himself.

I thought this would be quite a difficult, strange or morbid experience. Not the usual places I visit. All in all this was beautiful. Thanks for the light, the sweetness in the air, encounters & children fooling around. Quite a powerful experience to honour & meet these lives.
