perch lake

cgtn Chinese scientists recently found fossils of climbing perch also called walking fish in the Nyima Basin, of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The now dry and desolate Nyima Basin was once part of a big lake more than 20 million years ago, the scientists say. A climbing perch is a tiny fish found in ponds throughout Asia. It is generally brown or gray in color and is known for its ability to breathe atmospheric oxygen and walk out of water.

Mockingjay Manor - Ch 2

Find Part one here.

We asked, you voted overwhelmingly to send Katniss and friends into the strange old manor house she’s inherited. What adventures await them inside? Let’s find out, shall we? As always, you’ll have 48 hours to vote (in the comments or reblogs, NOT in the tags!), until Noon EDT on Thursday, September 7th.

This week’s installment was crafted by the incomparable @jennagill (who asked that we give a shout out to @papofglencoe for her invaluable assistance.) Hang on folks, here we go…

“C’mon Katniss. We’ll take a look around, assess the needs, and come back tomorrow with a more informed game plan,” Peeta promises.

“Yeah, and maybe we can start on the demo,” Johanna says, rubbing her hands together and no doubt wanting to stick her axe in a wall.

“Who said anything about demo??” I squawk. “Maybe I want to restore this house to its former glory,” I say. It’s all still a little surreal to me. Inheriting this manor with $500,000 to fix it up in six months and the possibility gaining half of the estate if I’m successful sounds like a dream. Of course, if I don’t complete Uncle Haymitch’s task, then it all goes away and Peeta and I will return to the quiet life we had before the reading of the will.

“There’s always an opportunity for demo,” Finnick says, snapping me out of my thoughts. “This house was likely built in the turn of the century. It’s probably going to need foundation repair, new plumbing, bringing the electrical up to code, new roof, and new windows,” Finnick finishes, listing the top tasks off with his hands.

“Do you have a second career as a contractor that we don’t know about?” Peeta jokes.

“Nah, just watched a lot of This Old House,” Finnick says.

Dr. Destiny #4

Dr. Destiny #1
Dr. Destiny #2
Dr. Destiny #3

A long time ago, a young boy was playing with his mother by the lake.
But while she wasn’t looking, they boy was gone. She searched for him for days until she found his body washed up on the shore.
Stricken with grief, his mother would do everything to get her child back. She learned the dark arts and summoned him back from the dead.
But when her boy was back, she was repulsed by him. He had transformed into a monster of weeds and moss.
She cast him out, exiling him. With nowhere left to go, the boy returned to the lake from which his body came.
Saddened and alone, the boy cried, and his tears woke up the spirit of the lake. She felt sorry for the boy and guilty for causing his death, so she allowed him to live with her, caring for him and nurturing him like his mother wouldn’t.
One day, after years of living in the bottom of the lake, the boy was crying again.
“What’s wrong, my child?” asked the lake spirit.
“I was watching the people play in the lake above. All of my friends have grown up, found love, and had kids of their own. And I am still a boy.”
“Worry not, my child. For you will grow.” the spirit blessed her child with a song.
As more years went by, the child grew and grew, until his body was the size of an island and his head was tall enough to see above the water.
And from where he sat he could watch all of the people play.

”That’s a beautiful story.” Lilac said as she leaned in closer to read the old inscription on the sign. A warm breeze blowed from the lake left and brushed through her ginger hair.

“It’s probably just a story. And even if there is a kernel of truth to it, it’s probably not nearly as beautiful.” Dr. Destiny said. She was holding onto Lilac’s hand and looking up at the wooden sign. Above the inscription was an old illustration etched into the wood, an island with a face peeking above the water, with a wide warm smile looking directly at the viewer. Above that was the title of the sign: “The Story of Benagam Island”

Magical places of the wizarding world (1/?) : Hogwards School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

‘Yeh’ll get yer firs’ sight o’ Hogwarts in a sec,’Hagrid called over his shoulder, ‘jus’ round this bend here.’ There was a loud ‘Oooooh !’. The narrow path had opened suddenly on to the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers.

Amour Étrange Part 2

Pairing: Draco x Reader
Word Count: 2,037
Warnings: bullying (”mudblood” term), fluff, almost-kiss, Malfoy being slightly aggressive (not towards the reader)
Author / Editor: @magicology101 / @saxxxology

It’s been almost a month since you and Draco sat together in Transfiguration. Since the brief study session the same afternoon, you haven’t studied together either. You’re slightly worried that it was all a joke, that the affinity you’d had with him was a lie. The only thing you can really do is remain optimistic and cling to the shred of faith you hold deep inside.

Whenever you pass each other in the hallway, he smiles at you before continuing on his way, Crabbe, Goyle, and the pug-faced Pansy Parkinson at his heels. While you don’t talk during class, he sneaks glances at you during class and occasionally winks playfully, which makes you blush a soft shade of pink as you bury your face in whatever book happens to be in front of you.

So I want to write a story

Chuck is fed up with Castiel getting the shaft. He feels bad that he didn’t give Cas the closure he needed (that even LUCIFER got, might I add) before he absconded to wherever the fuck with his cunt of a sister, so he gives Dean a new perspective on things by forcing Dean to rebuild Castiel from a molecular level, as once Cas did for him.

Dean gets no instructions as to how to rebuild his angel, but is given all the means with which to do so. He has to rely on his instincts to save people to keep Cas from disappearing from his life once and for all.

The only part that has vividly played out scene by scene is the after. (I’m a happy person and I love these characters so you best believe it gets a happy ending). The actual rebuild is in my head, I have images that I have plotted out with singular pivotal points that stand out (read:angst), but it wouldn’t flow right unless I sat down and wrote it from the start.

Featuring my headcannon for how Destiel becomes cannon, where no one actually talks about it after the fact, and it is not explicit, just hand holding when the camera is focused elsewhere. And one particular scene of Dean and Castiel being woken up by Sam barging into their room for a case/emergency while they’re in the same bed. (Cas being awake since he doesn’t sleep, sitting up quickly when he hears Sam coming down the hall and getting an arm in the face from the movement, off camera of course) When Sam opens the door all you see is Cas trying to gently pry Dean off of his bare upper half and Dean grumbling sleepily to quit squirming) and Dean coming to life instantly on high alert (hunter reflexes) when he finally recognizes the tone of Sam’s voice, grabbing clothes haphazardly and tossing them on as Cas does the same (in NORMAL clothing ya’ll) and following Sam down the hall (and Dean doing the hop thing that happens when you throw on pants while you walk) where he sets the laptop (that he had in his arms when he came into the room) on to the map table for Dean and Cas to look at while he gives the details of the case.

I don’t want onscreen smut. I don’t want an explanation as to the how. That is what fan fiction is for, and why I love those who write it (even if we sail different ships, you best believe I read that shit because a good story is a good story, regardless if its my ship or not).

All I want is for my boys to have a weird shaky truce with the world. For a Winchester that is as close to paradise as you can get outside of a dock perched over an unnamed lake, with the one being in the world that knows you, truly knows you inside and out, and loves you anyway.

I have the whole thing (its going to be LOOOOONG) plotted out in my head, but I don’t know if people would actually read it. The parenthesis are annoying to me, but I don’t know how else to convey the non-action portions to get across the whole picture as I see it in my head.

SO! If you actually read this far, either you want me to write it, or you’ll help me write it, both are needed greatly.

Fairy Tale Castles in Czech Republic

The largest ancient castle in the world, occupying an area of almost 70,000 m2, it boasts many stunning courtyards, palaces, museums and gardens.  The castle has been the seat of Czech kings, emperors and presidents for a thousand years. Day 67 - Eleanor’s Childhood Trips to Switzerland

Between 1899 and 1902, Eleanor spent three years at Allenswood, an elite boarding school for girls near London. During holidays she frequently travelled throughout England and continental Europe visiting friends and relatives, including a trip in 1900 to St. Moritz, Switzerland.

From Eleanor’s autobiography:

As the summer holidays came nearer my excitement grew for I was to travel to Saint-Moritz in Switzerland to spend my holiday with the Mortimers.

My first view of these beautiful mountains was breath-taking, for I had never seen any high mountains. I lived opposite the Catskill Mountains in summer and loved them, but how much more majestic were these great snow-capped peaks all around us as we drove into the Engadine. The little Swiss chalets, built into the sides of the hills and with places under them for all the livestock that did not actually wander into the kitchen, were picturesque, but strange to my eyes with their fretwork decoration…

The hotels [in Saint-Moritz] all bordered the lake, and the thing that I remember best about my time there was the fact that Tissie and I got up every morning early enough to walk to a little café that perched out above the lake on a promontory at one end. There we drank coffee or cocoa and ate rolls with fresh butter and honey, the sun just peeping out over the mountains and touching us with its warm rays. I can still remember how utterly contented I was!
