Hi! So I'm in my junior year of college and I realized half of my closet is from high school. What are some basics I should have to start upping my wardrobe game? I'm a very casual dresser and I love neutrals and earth tones. I have long legs but a short torso. Any help?

Hi there! Below is a list of basics that I’d recommend for getting for your wardrobe to a more mature style. A good tip is to buy pieces which you can mix and match for several different outfits.

  • Shirts ― Plaid and denim shirts are perfect for any outfit or as just another layer in the winter weather. Paired with a statement necklace these pieces can add a chic twist to an outfit. You can see here that Jessica Alba does it!
  • Blouses ― Chiffon are one of my favourite items. They can glam up an outfit for an occasion or add a classy twist to a causal outfit. Blouses are also great for job interviews. Some examples are here as a business casual look, here as a casual day look and here.
  • Leather jackets ― The ultimate jacket for every outfit. I class this as a necessity. It’s perfect with pretty much everything and can never go out of style. A good leather jacket is an investment piece and can be worn for casual looks, nights out and parties. Here is an example of a going out outfit and here as a casual day look.
  • Blazers ― The ultimate way to smarten up a casual outfit. Easy to style for job interview, dinner dates and parties, there is no reason not to have one. Topshop sell some blazers which mix trendy and formal!
  • Jumpsuits ― A great piece which can be dressed up for a night time or down on a casual outing. Here and here are two good examples of jumpsuits catered for day and night!
  • Little black dress ― Needed for those formal occasions and never goes out of style. Asos has some great party style dresses. Missguided, Boohoo, Showpo and PepperMayo have some at a cheaper price.
  • Brogues ― Great for dressing up a casual outfit and wearing for a job interview.
  • Heels ― Necessity for those formal occasions and gatherings. Some styles that would be good include skinny strapped heels, block heel sandals, simple black heels (I bought these for my year 12 formal!) and heeled boots.
  • Handbag ― I’d recommend to handbags - a large one for every day and a small crossbody bag (or clutch). Investing in a good quality bag is a great way to up your wardrobe.
  • Jewellery ― Accessorising can really improve your overall outfit. Pairing clothes with a statement necklace, a selection of rings or a bracelet can make a real difference. A watch can also be an on-trend piece. Here is a list of watch makers that I personally like.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with improving your wardrobe! x
