Some Belated Valentines 2k17 Highlights from Flower Land

- The giant Russian man who stormed through the door while we were quite busy and shouted “Whoooo is helping me? I need BEST FLOWERS in the WORLD because I have BEST WIFE!!”
- The old man who picked up his roses at 8 AM and when I said “I hope she likes them!” giggled and said “These oughta keep me outta the dog house for at least a week!”
- At 3 PM: “I need a delivery of tulips to the south side today.” “We aren’t doing any more deliveries to the south side today.” “I should tell you that this is on behalf of my client {Redacted Football Player} of The Bears and he is willing to pay literally anything.”
- “Hey, boss, I have an order from FootballPlayer of The Bears and he is willing to pay literally anything.” “Don’t you mean FootballPlayer of The Bears FOR NOW?”
-“Okay tell him we’ll do it but he has to buy all our remaining tulips.”
- One guy wanted to buy a teddy bear holding a real rose so I made a teeny tiny rose bouquet for the bear to hold and it is easily the cutest thing I have ever made.
- This same guy grabbed a 55 dollar
arrangement from my table and brought it to me and said “Add flowers to this until it is 200 dollars.”
- Valentine’s Day makes some men crazy.
- When the last man came in to pick up his arrangement twenty minutes after we were supposed to close everyone who was working shouted his name in unison and it was Hilarious.
- All the parents sending flowers to their single professional daughters. Almost all of them made me teary. People from all over the country have daughters who live in Chicago and are single and they all wanted to send their single Chicago daughters flowers.
- “A man is calling and he says you are his best friend?” “What?” “He has an Eastern European accent?” “OH! It’s the man who has the best wife!”
- “I would like 100 roses.” “That will be 600 dollars.” “I would like 12 roses.”

Sorry to disappoint the people who were expecting this to get explicit but this is about the maximum level of PG13 spiciness to expect from here on out, I just wanted to write a comic about people who were So Into each other it would give everybody the warm fuzzies when they finally got together. And also give everyone more cocky bro Jack, because I think there’s a distinct lack of that in the tag for a guy with a one-armed Gaston pushups emote.

I had a really interesting conversation about the possibility of a female Doctor with my 12-year-old sister two weeks ago. Doctor Who is her favourite tv show. In the past, she has always underlined that she wanted her Doctor to be young and attractive and basically Matt Smith, thank you. I don’t think she would have had issues with a Doctor of Colour, but a female Doctor would have been almost as bad as, you know, some old guy.

I never had the impression that she put any deeper thought in the matter. And then two weeks ago, faced with the more tangible potential of a female Doctor happening, she looks at me and tells me she doesn’t think a female Doctor is a good thing, because a female Doctor can’t do the same things as a male Doctor? “Really?” - Unsure look. “I guess…?” Silence. “My favourite scenes are the ones where he realises that he’s wrong, that he’s an idiot, they couldn’t do that with a woman?” - “Why?” - “I mean, there’s not really a reason, but…”

There’s this back and forth in which she comes up with new things that a female Doctor probably cannot do, only to me met by her own confusion every time I question why. There’s no direct logical reasoning that goes “Female Doctor” -> “Incapable of all the Doctor’s ‘weak‘ moments”, but she also kind of holds on to that concern as a real one. She never fears that a female Doctor cannot be an awesome hero. She fears she cannot be an awesome, flawed one.

And that’s fascinating perspective from someone who is essentially half a generation younger than me, who grew up with a slightly different media landscape, with half a generations worth of new heroes. So here’s to the Doctor as a flawed female heroine, as someone who is silly, as someone with faults, as someone who gets to be wrong. In spite of being a 2,000-year-old alien, let her be a role model who is real.

With ‘Pokémon Go,’ Niantic created a safe space for black female gamers — and I miss it

Pokémon Go was the first title that I played in years which granted me a somewhat-fearless experience in gaming. It allowed me to cast aside some personal doubts, misgivings and assumptions about myself and other people. Not once was I judged for being an adult playing a “kids game”; there were no snide comments about me being a woman in a space that was occupied mostly by men.

The environment was devoid of racist remarks about me being a black player. The unchangeable aspects of myself — the parts of me that were always a “cause” for disruption in other games — weren’t factors among Pokémon Go players. I was just always a fellow player, to whom ridiculous questions like “Do you want to run 12 blocks and three avenues with me to catch a Dragonite?” would be asked.

During my time playing regularly, the Pokémon-obsessed people of New York — comprised of scores of high school kids, financial analysts, journalists, artists, delivery service guys, somebody’s grandparents (seriously), entrepreneurs and more — became my second family.

At first I felt I might have looked the most out of place, based on the fact that I was one of the few women in the streets playing this game who looked like me. But I quickly came to realize that none of that mattered: Pokémon Go created an unlikely safe space in gaming that didn’t exist for me anywhere else.

I was part of that inaugural force of people that made the mobile game into a movement; I invested inordinate amounts of time (and some money) into being the best there ever was. But I haven’t played the game since March, and I wonder if I should find my way back. Read more (Opinion)

Things to expect in your first year of uni:

1. Sometimes you don’t make a solid group of friends straight away, so don’t feel too upset. I’m a second year and I’ve only really now started adding people on Facebook and forming casual friendships. It happens. If you do make good friends - awesome.

2.  Pre-readings and online modules prior to lectures and/or tutorials. DO THEM. Skim through readings if you’re short on time, and do the prep work the week before. Trust and save yourself from having to go through everything within days (multiplied by X units) before your exams.

3. Realising once you’re in your new home no, you did not need to pack every belonging you have, because yes, everything DOES. NOT. FIT.

4. Realising how much stuff you have but don’t need.

5. If moving out of home, bills and rent or paying for accommodation can be STRESSFUL.

6. ~Adulting~

7. How sometimes boring general core units are. It sucks but have to be done.

8. Your tutor not haggling you about studying more and stuff, ‘cause that’s all on you. If it’s the tutor’s fault, I would suggest bringing that up with the head of the school/faculty or even your student guild to think of solutions.

9. By approx. week 5 to week 6, class numbers begin to exponentially drop, most significantly within the last three weeks of semester.

10. Yes, older people study at uni too. Most of them are nice, genuine, and nervous. Yes, sometimes they do older people things.

11. There are many, many intelligent and kind people in university.

12. Some people have significantly different work ethics.

13. Going to the wrong class across the year is a-OK. I walked into an upper year math lecture and realised the lecturer wasn’t who mine actually was. Whispered very loudly “OH MY GOD” and walked straight out. We’ve all been there. Just kindly walk out and pretend nothing even happened.

14. University life is more than academics. Take a leap and do things.

15. You’ll have to do more than your degree to get to where you want to be.

16.  People party a lot, you can be one of them but if you want to keep up your grades, please balance it with your studies, work and other commitments!

17. University can either be harder or easier than high school. For me? Easier so far. Further units will be difficult. But you’ll learn a lot of useful and enriching knowledge which is worth something more than what you might learn in high school.

18. Seating plans don’t exist, but if you’re gonna change seats every week, you’re most definitely messin’ up the system.

What other things can first years expect? Whether you’re fresh out of first-year like me or a tertiary education veteran, I’ll make sure to update this continuously with all of our input!

What's up with all the smoking mentions in the article?? I have no problem with smoking but the observer did the same thing.... that plus the cheap coffee, Greggs... and also "Geordie Shore (“You could have a fun night out with the birds, but the lads are disgusting)" looool if this isn't to push more his lad laddy lad image... And what he said about partying.... As if that wasn't an image his team was trying to pass at the time that culminated with what we know....

They’re trying to paint him as the underdog “boy next door” who hasn’t forgotten his roots, doesn’t like the celebrity world, and so on. It’s not the same as the laddy lad image of early 2015.

1) The setting: “Of all the places I’d expect to encounter one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, a cold, near-empty warehouse in north London is not one of them.”

2) His friends: “His mate, a brown-haired boy with freckles holding a sausage roll wrapped in Greggs paper, had smiled and nodded at the people in the room. Standing there, the two of them looked like boys you might have known from school who had somehow grown up overnight.”

3) His musical influences (Green Day)

4) His school life: “"I was never what you’d call ‘book smart’… What used to piss my mum off is that I could have been…”

5) His audition: “… he looks like every other British teenager you could have found in any suburban town in the mid 2000s…”

6) Wanting to make it big in spite of others

7) “he clings onto his background with an almost commendable stubbornness.”

8) Rejecting fame: “You see people who are beyond self-absorbed, and that’s why it can be a dangerous place. For me, I much prefer messy nights out with my friends from home… You can surround yourself with super successful celebrities, but you can get swallowed up in the glitz and the glam of it all.”

9) Multifaceted individual: “… but his identity presents a strange duality.”

10) Gratefulness towards the band members

11) Girl power (the girl band)

12) Ambition: “In ten years time, the most important thing for me is that I’ll deliver a good album that people connect with, and then after that… who knows? I’ll set myself a new target. As soon as you start to feel comfortable, it’s a dangerous place to be in. That keeps my drive up, that keeps me going.”

It’s not a bad thing to have low interests. Most people eat at Greggs and watch trash television. Look at the small things, how he disses the guys from Geordie Shore but not the girls, or how he carefully chooses his wording. The marketing angle is clear - the first article was the underdog angle, this one, right before Back to you, is about him staying loyal to himself and being the childhood friend you could have had. I mean, look at BTY video. Of course they have to push this angle. It is the underdog narrative, but it isn’t the same as spring 2015 imho.

To admit depression to people who do not understand is admitting failure, attention seeking, a glamorization of it, a phase, and weakness to them. They do not understand the complexity of it. That is why so many people are afraid of seeing someone about their depression, for the fear of being misunderstood. That is why I will never be afraid to admit I have had severe depression for 12 years, not because it’s a “phase” or because I want to glamorize it or because I want attention. No, it is because there are so many people who are too afraid to be judged by the same people who caused it. I am not afraid to say that I have suffered the worst pain, but I will not let it break me, instead I let it shape me and inspire me to express it through poetry. That is why I share with you the pain so many of us have to live with each day with my poetry book “Words That Kill” for you to know that there is always light in the darkness. Never give up.

Try to rip people off with shady flipped houses? Watch me flip your bank account.

So I don’t think this is entirely pro, but this just happened and I’m quite pleased with myself. Sorry for how long it is, I’m a wordy person.

Background: my girlfriend and I have been trying to buy a house for a month or two. Housing market where we live is tough, we don’t have a huge income, most houses sell within 24 hours, etc so it’s been a struggle. About a month and a half ago we found a house that was PERFECT. In the neighborhood we wanted, 2 bed 2 bath, at the very top of our price range but still doable, etc etc. Best part is that it’s beautifully renovated, new roof, everything is new and gorgeous! We put in an offer, but get outbid by someone else (which is crushing, if you have yet to experience that).

We mourn and then continue searching for other houses….until we get a call from our agent saying that the other buyers backed out and the seller is offering it to us first before putting it back on the market.

A quick important note here: the seller is the owner, but is also acting as his own real estate agent, and he runs his own business buying foreclosures and flipping them. This is important later.

Fox News suggests Muslims should stop bombing and burning people if they want better TV portrayals

  • On Sunday, a few days after Trump dropped the “mother of all bombs” in Afghanistan, a panel of Fox News hosts told the Muslim community not to “set off bombs” if they want better media representation.
  • The comments came after Homeland actor Mandy Patinkin’s interview with MSNBC on Friday. Patinkin said the show was dedicated to de-escalating the fear of Muslims and refugees.
  • “In movies, it was the cowboys and Indians, the nazis and communists,” Patinkin said. “Now, they’ve chosen the Muslim community — a community who has made contributions to the world of a monumental nature.”
  • Of course, the hosts over at Fox & Friends Weekend had a problem with Patinkin’s remarks.
  • “Do we remember who the bombers of the Boston Marathon were?” cohost Jon Scott said. “I mean, just an aside to the Muslim community, if you don’t want to be portrayed in a negative light, maybe don’t burn people alive and set off bombs and things like that."
  • Several Twitter users pointed out the hypocrisy and flawed logic in their response. Read more (4/17/17 12:35 PM)

Because 9 years ago I did not think I would be able to live with my anxiety and depression. Life sucked for me and I struggled so much with wanting to live and being too scared to do anything about it.
Two days ago, I celebrated my 22nd birthday surrounded by people who care for me and in 12 days I will be graduating from college with my Bachelors degree in Communication and a minor in journalism.
May is Mental Health Awareness month and this is my big middle finger in the air to my own illnesses because the more people who know and talk about mental health, the better off people like me will be. Don’t let the stigma make you afraid to talk about it.
Mental illnesses are still illnesses even if the world can’t physically see them.

So I was rewatching YOI again and then I got to think…

In Episode 7 when Yuuri cried:

  • He’s always been an anxious fellow; he gets extremely nervous before important events
  • Now his anxiety and nervousness doubled because he thinks that his mistakes will reflect badly on Viktor, too, and of course he of all people doesn’t want the living legend to look bad in front of everyone - especially on Viktor’s debut as a coach
  • He’s trying his best to man up and hold himself together
  • But then Viktor said “i will resign as your coach if you fail” like testing him, so Yuuri gets extremely upset because it feels like Viktor has so little trust in him
  • Thus he reaches his limit and breaks down in tears

And then in Episode 12 when Viktor cries, at first I was like “well of course he cried, who wouldn’t be sad suddenly listening to yuuri saying something like that?”

But when I tried to put myself in his shoes:

  • He has been fascinated by Yuuri since the banquet last year; he was lonely and at the brink of losing inspiration, but then Yuuri came and brought colors to his life
  • His relationship with Yuuri has made him extremely happy; Yuuri taught him “life and love”, they have just recently exchanged engagement rings
  • They have been practicing for the Stay Close to Me Duet; that night Viktor must be looking forward to tomorrow’s exhibition when he could finally show their love to the whole world while skating to this program - the program that represents his desperate plea for love which was answered by Yuuri
  • But suddenly Yuuri said he would retire after this final, making that Duet he looked forward to the last time they skated together

WHO THE FUCK WOULDN’T CRY NOW THIS SCENE JUST GOT TWICE AS SAD

So I need prompts for a conversation between a hero and a villain, the hero got captured by the villain. They have feelings for each other so it's a pretty emotional conversation. Do you have any ideas?

1) “Are you hungry?” The villain asked.
“You’re seriously going to do the cliche force your enemies to dinner thing?”
“We’re not enemies, at least, we don’t have to be.” The concern on the villain’s face was unbearable. “When was the last time you ate? You’re much too thin.”

2) “Tell me you don’t love me. Please.”

3) “Please don’t do this,” the hero said. “I’ll do anything.”
“I know. That’s precisely why I need you to stay safely put here.”

4) “You love me.”
“Of course I love you, as if that was ever the problem here.”

5) “I suppose you’re going to kill me now, or torture me for information.”
“I suppose you’re going to make me - you know hurting you is not what I want.”

6) “You have to let me go.”
“I don’t have to do anything for you anymore.”

7) “I wish I’d never fallen in love with you.”

8) “You’re not going to hurt me, you love me.” It was the first time either of them had admitted the truth aloud, and it hung heavy between them.
The villain sighed and kissed the hero’s forehead. “You should know its always the ones we love who we end up hurting the most.”

9) “I want to give you the opportunity to leave, take those friends of yours. Go. I won’t hunt you. Don’t ever come back.”
“I can’t do that.”

10) “I’d rather die than live in the kind of world you want to create.”
“Why do you imagine I’ve been trying so hard to kill you?”

11) “You’ve changed.”
“People do that. It’s been a long time.”

12) “I loved you, once.”
“You still do, it’s why you fight me so hard. You don’t care about them. But god,” the villain leaned in close. “You will never forgive yourself for not seeing this coming.”

13) “I wanted so badly to save you from this.”
“You made me this, you were suffocating me!”

14) “Oh the guilt of loving a monster, how do you stand it?”
“You’re not a monster.”

15) “Oh why do you always do this to yourself? Don’t worry, I’ll look after you now.”

13 reasons why I didn’t kill myself

1/ Life isn’t about school. I was bullied for years, it was awful and I will never leave my past behind to be someone remarkably self-confident. School’s a big piece of your lifetime but still, it’s only a piece of it. Most of the time, you will never meet your classmates again after you finished high school.

2/ Don’t give to people who didn’t believe in you a reason to think they were right. Prove them how much they’ve been mistaken about you.

3/ You aren’t stuck in a place forever. If you are sick to stay in the same town then move out. The world is big, you can go anywhere for a short or a long time and you can start again somewhere nobody knows you. It’s not an easy choice but it can be great, promised. There is a lot of ways to travel for nothing. If you can’t move out now, you can at least start to plan something or to dream about it.

4/ My family deserved to know. I was in bad terms with my parents, I nerver told anyone how much I was suffering at school. Maybe I was to proud to tell them, maybe it was the only way I found to convince me I was okay cause I didn’t ask for help. I knew I was strong but I didn’t know how broken I was.

5/ If you want to live in a better world, how would it be? Many times, I met people who fought for rights, like I did in different ways. They inspired me and gave me some hope. Cause even if there are a lot of stuffs not going well, there will always be some of us to stand up against bullshit. I felt useful when I spent time with them to fight. It was also intellectually rewarding.

6/ You maybe know what you will leave but you never know what you will miss. What will happen in next few days, months or years? You can think it’s better this way but based on what? The future is unpredictable.

7/ What are you attached to? I like the rain, the storm, the clouds. Looking at the leaves of trees moving with the wind or to walk outside alone at night looking at the stars. I want to rescue a dog from a shelter when I will have my place. Nobody can stop me from doing these things.

8/ You can build new relationships every day. New or future colleague, bestfriend, girl-/boy-/enby-friend. I’ve found my soulmate when I was 25 yo, every time I think about my past suicidal thoughts, I’m glad I’m still alive.

9/ As a spoonie, I never wanted to give up. I was depressed long before I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. My chronic illness is a source of anxiety and ask me a lot of energy to stay “able” but I will always do all I can till I can’t.

10/ Learn something new every day. It was my leitmotiv for a long time, you don’t need to know why you are here, at least, try to find smart ways to spend your time, it will never be lost. Your future self will thank you for.

11/ Music can save your life.
Do not underestimate its power. Escape.

12/ Don’t be too hard with yourself. Don’t listen to what people say about you. Learn who you are and who you want to be. Clean up this mess.

13/ Inhale, hold, exale. Do it again and again.
Close your eyes & just breathe.
