pendulums crystal

A brand new grimoire page all done! A compass-inspired pendulum board coffee stained on top of a collage of newsprint. Now that this is done, I can continue going through all the asks in my inbox! Sorry for the delay!

Also! Thank you so much for 1000+ followers! It’s honestly amazing how far this blog has gone in a short span of several months and I hope to continue watching it grow. I plan on posting lots more grimoire pages and perhaps if you guys are interested, some process work? Like how one of my pages comes together, from first idea to final piece? Any suggestions as to what you’d like to see more of would be great!

Beginner Witches

I had a request to do a sort of master post to help out all of the baby witches out there who don’t believe in, worship, or want to include any deity(s)
Now this is going to be a bit wordy but bare with me, you can always just send me an ask about a specific question and I’ll answer it that way
My main point will probably be not to follow what any other witch tells you to a t, develop your own craft and do what feels right for you
I most definitely missed some stuff in here and I’m sorry, but again just feel free to message me with any questions you have, or just to say ‘hi'

Where I started
I first started in High School because I had a Wiccan friend and it made me feel not “crazy”
I had really been into witchcraft since the beginning of Middle School but at the time there wasn’t any sort of social media out there that I was allowed to be on. We had one computer that was in my mom’s bedroom so it wasn’t like I could research witchcraft and I wasn’t able to find a community of witches (whether or not I talk and interact with them because I still don’t) for me to fit in and not feel like that weird kid in school that took Harry Potter too literally
So in High School I was able to ask my friend questions (still didn’t have access to anything, the computer got moved to the kitchen and any time I was on it my mom would sit in the living room and angle herself to see the computer screen) and learn what I could from her. I got a closer look at crystals and tarot through her and she would always do readings for me and my friends and tell us about them.

What I wished I’d known
You don’t have to be into every “witchy” thing. You don’t have to do tarot, you don’t have to like crystals, you don’t have to be into zodiacs, you don’t have to have a coven, you don’t have to worship any sort of deity to be a witch, you don’t have to have a wand, you don’t have to have all the herbs and candles. You don’t have to have anything but yourself. Also, tarot cards do not have to be given to you as a gift, blessed by a coven leader, or speak to you when you get them in person. I ordered mine on eBay and they work just fine for me. I also wish I had known about all the different types of witchcraft and that it’s okay to follow any which path or none at all, you do you and not what others think is the right way.

Now for what you should know/do when you’re just beginning

Do lots of research. Boooring, but it doesn’t have to be! When I say research I mean to learn the common terminology because the majority of the blogs you find aren’t going to explain what stichomancy or a taglock is, they just assume that you know what it is. Find what you’re into and look into that, if you want to do divination look up all the different kinds and find what kinds you want to do and then look up about them. If you’re into herbs, know your herbs, some can absolutely not be consumed and even though they’re used for witchcraft and you think you can burn them and make tea, you CAN’T. Don’t consume any form of herbs without knowing about them.

Pendulum readings are the easiest kind of divination in my opinion, but they’re not always accurate. The reason why is psychological, if you want a certain answer to be the one, the pendulum will swing in that direction. Why? Your brain starts sending signals to your hand to swing it in the certain direction, and your fingers will be minutely moving to make it do so. This is why it’s not always the best, because when doing readings for people you want to make them happy. So subconsciously you’re wanting to pendulum to answer in a way that will make the person happy and not hurt their feelings or upset them.

Tools include pretty much everything, wand, crystals, herbs, tarot cards, candles, basically anything you see that fits the witchy aesthetic. You don’t need them. The items aren’t magical, you make them magical. That necklace you’ve been wearing since you were a kid holds way more power in it than the wand you bought at your local witch shop. I personally don’t like wands, I think they’re silly and I don’t own one nor have I ever used one. And guess what, it’s never inhibited me in anyway. Your intent and your will is way stronger than any tool you can buy.

A grimoire is one of those things that I will highly recommend. This is your place to put everything, keep track of your crystals, any spells you saw online, color correspondences, herbs, absolutely anything! It doesn’t have to be some fancy leather bound tome handed down through generations. And don’t write it thinking of it as something that’ll get handed down, write it for you and in a way that’ll help you. Personally, I want to one day have some fancy leather bound book that just looks magical, but right now I have a stack of composition books and hundreds of tumblr likes. I plan on splitting my grimoire up into a bunch of mini grimoires and then the massive one. The mini ones will be separated into herbs, sigils, crystals, tarot, runes, spells, curses, and basically anything else that I can categorize. I also will recommend an online copy. It’s way faster to write and if you back it up, no matter what happens you’ll always have it. And for those in the broom closet, it’s much easier to hide.

Copying spells or sigils you see online is perfectly okay, it’s what I do the majority of the time. I will say, however, that when you create your own spell or sigil that it’s more powerful because it comes from you. Not to say that using another person’s doesn’t come for you, but you didn’t put your whole into it when it’s already been done for you. It’s also perfectly okay to substitute anything in a spell for something else, or to just not use it for what ever reason. Chanting, a lot of spells you find call for chanting. The chanting works, I just don’t like it. I feel silly talking out loud like somebody’s going to hear me, I do everything in my head or by writing it out. I’ve never once chanted something out loud and I’ve never had an issue. As long as your intent is in the spell, you’re golden. I’ve seen before to never do a spell until you’ve studied every aspect of the spell and know every little detail about witchcraft, screw that. Do the spell, if your intent is there, once again, then you’re fine. No amount of studying witchcraft will ever make somebody perfect, we’re all still learning. Cursing is also okay, Wicca says that it’s not, if you’re not Wiccan than it’s your personal choice.

I’m going to repeat it, DO NOT consume anything in any way without knowing if it’s okay to do so. I’ve seen potions with herbs in it that are not consumable, but when people think of potions they think of something that you drink. Just always know if an herb is okay to ingest or burn before doing so.

Crystals are one of the biggest scams when buying. Nine times out of ten they’re way over priced or they’re not correctly labeled. So many etsy shops sell “moonstone” but it’s really opalite. If you know your stones and what they look like you can weed out the mislabeling. The prices are still a big thing though. The descriptions will say ultra rare and have a ridiculous price, and then you’ll go on ebay and you can buy the same thing for under $10. Always shop around and know what you’re looking for before buying a crystal.

Just do what feels right to you. Don’t follow others blindly, do your own thing and have fun. If it starts to feel like a chore then take a step back and find your magick again.

My Divination Box

I have not been on top of my shit nearly as much as I should be. I made my own October tarot challenge and oNLY DID LIKE 4 DAYS OF IT. Great job me. To make up for it, I’m going to do a post about my divination box!

While I DO have an alter, my divination stuff all over it began to make it feel more like a work table than an alter table. SO I moved all my divination into this lovely box. Plus I wanted my stuff to be all in one, mobile place. Here it is!!!

BAM. Ain’t that nice? It use to be a regular wooden box but I painted it black, sealed it, and then added this piece of art that I cut out of a book (it was a very musty, moldy, water-damaged book that you couldn’t even look at let alone open up without feeling tiny mold spores literally fill up your lungs, so no huge loss, really), then I also sealed THAT. On the underside of the lid is this

a piece depicting the Goddess Heresy, also from the same book. While I don’t follow any Gods/Goddesses, I really liked this piece because she seems pretty boss. Now let’s look inside!

Do you think I have enough pouches?

In the star and moon one is where I keep my tarot deck. The bag sort of matches the back of the cards so that’s cool. In the bag with the cards I also keep a piece of amethyst, piece of quartz, a vial of salt, and a vial of sage leaves (that I grew myself!)

In the velvet bag is where I keep what I call my tarot stones. These are all crystals/stones that (I feel) aid in divination and its aftermath. I’ve got amazonite, sodalite, florite, red jasper, quartz, hematite, desert rose selenite, optical calcite (aka icelandic spar), blue calcite, blue sandstone, green calcite, and tiger’s eyes. I’ve also got a lovely wishing stone that has special meaning for me as well as this hella round rock I found. There’s nothing special about that one, I just like it.

The white pouch was handmade by me! Don’t laugh at it, I tried, okay? It holds my lovely rose quartz runes. They were a birthday gift from a close friend and are pretty important to me even though my rune reading studies are going SO SLOW (I’m not good at runes, quite frankly).

In the small red pouch are my witches runes! I made these myself!

Next is my rune casting cloth! This was also made by me (I’m very DIY if you haven’t noticed). It’s literally just sharpie on a handkerchief but I like it.

Then we have these. My pendulum and my journal. I just finished making the pendulum, it’s my very first one, and it might be my new favorite thing. It’s just a pentacle charm and a small amethyst stone but I already feel so connected to it. I think it’s because the stone use to be part of a bracelet that I wore CONSTANTLY until it broke the other day. So the stone is very connected to my energy. I can’t wait to start using it more. The journal is my divination journal. It’s different from my BOS in that in it I only record my daily tarot drawings and any divination that I do for myself or others. That’s literally its only purpose.

And then finally we have my two charm bottles. The big one is for protection, the small one is for increased intuition!

Well there you go! I might abandon this box if I find something a little larger, but for now I’m very happy with it. Do you have a special place for your witchy tools?

My pendulum isn’t a crystal (it’s a small bottle filled with herbs), but the concept is the same, and I personally found this technique helpful for getting to know the pendulum. Of course, sometimes I’ll substitute the “No” question for a simple, “Show me no,” but I prefer to ask it  to “Show me yes,” and then attempt a question that should garner a “No” answer.

For understanding new or existing deities that have presented themselves in your life. It invokes an understanding that the relationship flows both ways, hence the focus not only on them but you. This can equally be used for spirit communication/angel communication/etc.

Crystals to use:

Clear Quartz

Black Tourmaline

Lapis Lazuli

**When contacting spirits/deities, please take the necessary precautions (cleanse the room, salt circles, ground yourself.) At ANY time where you feel like the reading is out of your control or that you are in danger, politely end the reading and cleanse your space once again. Be safe, know your limits, and don’t feel bad for politely declining a deity/spirit in which you feel like you can’t serve with where you are at this point in your life.
