Korra can't make contact with the past Avatars any more but they're still in the Spirit World
Ok but what if Korra and Asami see Aang and he’s asking all about Tenzin and Kya and Bumi and Katara and Zuko and he gets really excited that they found Toph and he thinks it’s hilarious that she’s just been hiding in a swamp this whole time and he wants to know what his grandkids are like and he wants to know all about the new airbenders and about all the bison and about how Pema’s doing after having four bender kids and
Ya know how Tenzin starts crying whenever he remembers that the Air Nation has completely been rebuilt after the culture was destroyed and his father was the last Airbender for like 120 years? Yeah I do that too.
So while rewatching S4E07, I was reminded of super small theme within Pema and Tenzin’s relationship and parenting style that I really like.
Far too often in television, mothers are depicted as the “serious” and “mean” parents, while fathers are the “fun” and “nice” ones. You’d think that by 2015 we’d have evolved past that boring and unimaginative trope, but alas, we largely haven’t. That’s one of the reasons I like Pemzin so much. While Tenzin is a bit too solemn and humourless (don’t get me wrong here, I love Tenzin, but even Katara admitted he’s very serious), Pema just giggles at Meelo’s ridiculousness. I know a lot of people perceive their relationship as rather gendered, but I find it really sweet (I mean, not EVERY woman in the series needs to be a hardcore fighter–Pema’s strong and inspirational in her own way).
She was certain her eyes were open, but her surroundings could have fooled her. The room was darker than night, the floor colder than ice. Lin’s cheek pressed against the concrete, entirely numb. There was no feeling, no sensation, no acknowledgement from her old friend. The earth ignored her, pressing against her tear stained cheek without so much as a ‘hello.’
Lin’s hands found the floor on either side of her body and she forced herself up with a grunt, head pounding in protest. The dull ache in her veins hummed inside her body, assuring her that she was, unfortunately, alive. But if she were alive, that simply meant there was more work to be done.
because if i was crying at 5 in the morning i’m taking you down with me
*breathes deeply* PEMA AND TENZIN BEING LIKE KAI’S MOM AND DAD
Pema taking Kai out for clothes shopping when he’s like 16 and remarking to the saleswoman, “Boys just grow so fast” while Kai looks at the merch nearby and the woman chuckles and says, “I know, I have 2 myself. How many do you have?”
Kai nearly breaks something but recovers quickly
He’s trying not to cry as they leave the store and he just stops and hugs Pema “Thanks… thanks mom”
Pema just ruffles his hair “Of course Kai”
The first time Kai calls Pema mom in front of anyone else but her is after dinner one night and he, Tenzin and Jinora are helping clean up (Ikki, Meelo and Rohan have scampered off somewhere)
“Kai, can you pass the towel?” “Sure thing Mom.”
Jinora looks surprised but then she smiles; Tenzin has a harder time concealing his surprise
Kai and Jinora leave to catch a mover for a date and Tenzin’s like “Mom?”
“He’s pretty much our son, Tenzin,” Pema says, and Tenzin smiles because it’s true. “Besides, he’ll officially be part of the family when he marries Jinora, it’s just starting a few years earlier.” Tenzin’s smile widens, another truth
Tenzin going, “True,” but he still makes Kai think he has to work to get his approval when in reality the kid’s had it since the incident with P’li
Kai pulling off some airbending move/mission and he gets hurt and Jinora and Tenzin find him and Jinora hugs him (obvs) but Tenzin does too for the first time
and Kai just lightly wraps his arms around Tenzin and thinks this must be what it’s like to have a dad
“What were you thinking?” Tenzin says, angry with concern. “We were worried!”
Kai asking Tenzin for permission to ask Jinora to marry him. Tenzin pulling him into a hug, saying, “I thought you’d never ask”
“Thank you Tenzin.” “Call me dad?” Kai smiles so wide and maybe they’re both a little tearyeyed. “Sure thing…dad.”
