Reverse Chapter 6

“She’s going to be walking before you realize.” Dad comments, serving me a glass of water. “You’re going to be keeping your mother on her toes, Miss Addie.”

“Don’t say that.” I scowl and keep Adeline balanced on my lap. “I don’t want her to walk until she’s like 15 months old and her brother or sister is a little bit older.”

Dad chuckles and places a kiss on top of my head. “Oh love, babies are all so different.” He tickles Adeline’s chin and smiles proudly at her as she stands up on my lap. “She’s going to be just like you though. She’s reaching all her milestones at the same age as you, maybe a bit earlier.”

“The kids were early achievers.” I tell him. “Peeta tells me she’s keeping up with them all. Probably even ahead of all three. He’s chuffed.”

“She’s going to keep you on your toes, that’s for sure.” He smiles. “Just remember, we’re here for you love. You need an hour to yourself; we’ll drop everything to be there. If Addie is getting too much, we’ll take her for an hour to the park or for a drive. We’re your family and we’re here to help you, especially the closer you get to delivering our second grandbaby.”

"Thanks, Dad.” I wasn’t in the mood to argue, to tell him that I was more than capable of doing this. But I decided otherwise, I didn’t want him to throw it back at me down the track if I was having a meltdown and questioning every decision I had made.

“Now Addie, why don’t you come with Pop and we’ll go and see what everyone else is doing.”

She happily goes to her Pop and I’m thankful for the moment of peace.

Real or Not Real?

So I’m not sure why, but I cannot get Everlark out of my head.  I finally saw the two Mockingjay films last week, after all these years, (I read the books when Mockingjay was first published) & I became overwhelmed all over again by the relationship between Katniss & Peeta.  I think it must have something to do with his selflessness & her independence.  The evolution of their relationship is so powerful, and Jennifer Lawrence’s & Josh Hutcherson’s performances capture the heartbreak of love & loss & love again so beautifully.   When Peeta’s heart stops, Katniss’ emotion on display is heartbreaking.  I’ve re-watched the beach scene in Catching Fire too many times, but can’t seem to stop as it illustrates how finally, for a moment, Katniss & Peeta see each other.  When Peeta returns to District 12 after the war, the way Josh Hutcherson plays their reunion scene - he apologizes & holds Katniss delicately as his haunted eyes stare off into the distance, is heartbreaking.  When Katniss come to him in the night & he asks tentatively if she loves him real or not real, their gestures are so genuine.  The idea that after everything that Peeta, while forever changed, has returned to Katniss & Katniss recognizes the profoundness of her love for Peeta -  that she cannot survive without him both breaks & fills my heart.  Suzanne Collins wrote a powerful, political series of YA novels & her message of hope - the bread and the dandelion, make these characters unforgettable.

reTHG: The Hunger Games - Chapter Four: Star-crossed lovers

What I wonder the most about Haymitch is just how explicitly involved was he in Peeta’s strategy? - which goes back to just how developed and coordinated were the separate strains of the rebellion.  There are three distinct possible origins of the star-crossed lovers strategy: with Cinna (and Portia) deciding to match both their tributes and link them together at the tribute parade; with Haymitch ordering them to stay together and act like friends throughout training; with Peeta at some unknown time between the moment of the reaping to (at the latest, I think) the end of the tribute parade, when he suddenly finds the words to express his admiration of her.  I guess that it probably naturally evolved out of these events.

I have way more questions than answers about this whole thing.  It’s hard to tell what Haymitch knew or what he and Peeta discussed.  We know that Haymitch coached him on his interview with Flickerman - but to what extent?  Did Haymitch know that there was truth in Peeta’s strategy?  Since Peeta seems to not have known - before the arena - whether Haymitch was going to help him or help Katniss, it seems like their discussion of this whole plan had to have been pretty brief.  And yet we also know that Haymitch knew that Peeta was determined for Katniss to survive the arena, so even if Peeta framed the strategy as being for his own benefit, Haymitch knew or guessed otherwise.  Did Haymitch help Peeta get in with the Careers, or just advise him to?  If not, how did Peeta manage it when he was with Katniss the whole time they were also with the other tributes?

Questions for later.

ReTHG - What is Ashy Blond Hair?

My laptop is in repair mode right now, so I haven’t been able to join in the reread as much as I would have liked.

However, I do have a question. Katniss describes Peeta as having “ashy blonde hair that falls in waves over his forehead.”

My question is, what does ashy blond hair look like? She can’t literally mean like ash, as in grey/silver, because Peeta’s a boy at this point.

Yes, not a philosophical or especially important question, but it’s a bothersome one.

Our part of District 12, nicknamed the Seam, is usually crawling with coal miners heading out to the morning shift at this hour. Men and women with hunched shoulders, swollen knuckles, many who have long since stopped trying to scrub the coldest out of their broken nails, the lines of their sunken faces.

Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, chapter 1

I like how Collins plays with gender stereotypes in the trilogy, particularly with some of Peeta’s traits. And I appreciate that she’s equal opportunity here, mentioning that both men and women are miners in District 12, but Ripper may be the only (former) female miner mentioned in the books. Except maybe Bristel, whose gender seems to be unspecified. (Baby Name Guesser reports that Bristol is 2.13 times more likely to be a girl’s name.😆) Other than Purnia serving as a peacekeeper, gender roles seem pretty traditional in 12.

We don’t know how many women are miners in 12, but I wonder if Hazelle or Mrs. Everdeen ever considered it, given the dire straits their families were in. But maybe they weren’t young/strong enough to do it. And who would’ve looked after their kids? My impression is that Mrs. E is a little delicate for that sort of work — and she has a higher calling (though not necessarily a remunerative one) as a healer. And of course they know as well as anyone how dangerous mining is.

Hmmm… does anyone remember any female miners in the movie? I don’t, but I think there were female laborers in the industrial sabotage scenes in Mockingjay.

I always had a headcannon that Peeta's birthday was sometime in April or that he was born on Easter Day, just because I feel like Easter is supposed to symbolise new life, re-birth and hope, which is what Peeta symbolises to Katniss - especially when she says that what she need is 'the dandelion in the spring which symbols re-birth instead of distruction... and only Peeta can give me that' and because April/ Easter is in Spring too it makes me believe this more:)

I really love this thought. I think a lot of people think of him having a spring birthday. Since Easter’s date varies, I love the thought of an April birthday.

So We Beat On (ch.1?)

I started this nearly 3 years ago, inspired by the 2013 version of The Great Gatsby, then submitted it for 2014 Fandom4LLS. It’s meant to be a WIP, but will I ever actually continue it? I hope so. I’m kind of posting in the hopes that it will somehow provoke my inspiration. Or maybe I just need classes to finally be over for the year for that to happen, idk.

Summary: Katniss agrees to help her cousin Gale as a bootlegger during prohibition. As a result, she discovers an entire decadent world of partying, jazz music, and against her better judgement becomes mixed up with mysterious socialite-turned-war-hero, Peeta Mellark. 1920′s jazz era historical AU, heavily influed by The Great Gatsby.

“I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others–young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life.”

As the sinking sun casts its muted orange haze over the sardined buildings, I cup my head in my hand, balanced carefully on the edge of my knee, while I wait patiently on the back stoop. From a window propped open at the dwelling adjacent from us, music drifts down, a lazy tune I vaguely recognize only as that new music craze that’s seized the country in quite a fervor. I hear it sometimes walking down the streets on my way home from the factory, wafting out from some apartment or humming silently behind the darkened windows of the general store. Jazz, they call it.

I’m waiting for my cousin Gale, who promised to pick me up here, from this very spot, as soon as the cover of night falls. He promised me good money if I were willing to help him in this new venture of his. Good money for us all, he said. I was hesitant at first, but I would do almost anything if it meant food for my mother, and my sister. Prim, who is the only person in the world I’m certain I love.

Just working on Elaborate Lives, nbd

An image popped in his mind of a girl in a flapper dress. It was like a memory, but there was nothing in his life that ever warranted anyone wearing a dress like that.

“Daddy, can I sleep in your bed tonight?” Callie asked, tugging on Peeta’s hand and breaking him out of his thoughts.

“Cal, you need to start sleeping in your own bed.” At his daughter’s pout, Peeta sighed and smiled. “I tell you what, you start out in your bed and if you don’t fall asleep right away, you can sleep in my room.”

She smiled. “That sounds like a great plan!” She ran off toward the stairs. “I’m not tired at all, so I’ll win.”

Peeta laughed and followed at a slower pace. He couldn’t shake the thought of the girl in the flapper dress. And a part of him knew the girl was him. It had to be.

“I’m taking a bubble bath tonight.” Callie announced, pouring a hefty amount of the solution into the tub as it filled.

It took a bit to process the upturned bottle. “Callie, that’s way too much!”

“Oops.” She didn’t sound a bit contrite as she pushed the cap back down.

He laughed and shook his head. “I guess you get to have bubbled up over your head tonight.”

Katniss and Gale (or Peeta if you ship them)

I finally have an answer for this. Fall Asleep, by Jars of Clay. I was just listening to it and it made me think of them. Whether you're team Peeta or Gale, how the story ends is she ends up with Peeta. So I think of her and Peeta with this song. Honestly though, now that I think about it, it could be from both Peeta’s perspective and Gales, if you interpret it differently (my interpretation for Gales perspective is way, way different from what I think of Peeta’s. If you want to hear my thoughts on that, ask me, and I’ll try. I’ll probably just sound jaded because Gale is definitely not my favorite. Far from it). It made me think of Peeta first, so I’ll elaborate on that: I think that after all the games and the wars are over, and Peeta and Katniss are living in the Victor’s Village… There would be so much darkness in Katniss. Peeta, Peeta can channel it better I think. He can express it in his paintings and in his baking, and he can let it out. I feel like Katniss would bottle it in. So, in the song, it seems like the original singer is talking about his lovers dissatisfaction with him and the life they’ve built together, and this intense obsession with this “city”, this “grass is greener on the other side” kind of thing. I see it as Katniss becoming so involved, so fixated on all this darkness, that the “city” that she longs for is death. To be done. Who wouldn’t, after you’ve been through that? I think this is Peeta singing to her, begging her to not give in to the “city”, to give in to suicide. Maybe it wouldn’t be suicide, maybe it would be more like what happened in Catching Fire after they found out about the Games and how the Victors we’re supposed to come in, she just lost it. Maybe it would be more like that. But whatever it is, it’s dark and it’s not living, and Peeta’s singing, trying to keep her from that.
