Because something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices it’s children’s lives to settle its differences.
—  Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

Watching Divergent with the husband last night, and I wondered out loud why kindness, as a virtue, is summarily dismissed in so much YA fic. Four is this apparently perfect specimen except that he isn’t kind in the least… Amity is clearly the least important of the factions. In the HP universe, Hufflepuff is practically a nonentity- not a player at all in the battle of good and evil. It might as well be called “Hufflewhat.” And then I think about THG and how Katniss picks the thing she needs to survive: kindness. And I want to shake Suzanne Collins’ hand for creating a strong, confident, beautiful, kind hero for her heroine. Now that’s a message worth sending to the ladies.
