PEDALBELT  by Ana V. Francés

His name is Colin and he is bike messenger from Montreal, Quebec. He makes handmade leather foot straps.

1. How did your idea come up?

The idea came to me sometime January 2009.  Ice and salt ruined my clips and spd’s were getting jammed with ice.  I went up to the fabric district asked around and bought some buffalo leather.  I started cutting and came up with a design that is simple, functional and classic.   Friends started asking for some, then shops, then I decided to try Kickstarter.

2. Why bike accesories?

Because I live on my bike.  My bike is my workplace, the place I go to relax, and how my friends and I socialize.  Touring, running errands, racing alleycats, travelling- I do it all by bike.

3. Where are you based and why?

I am based in Montreal, and I love it.  It is a city like myself, it prides itself in being unlike any others.  It is made up of opposing factions; English, French, Jewish, etc with each group proud to say they are a “Montrealer”.  The architecture is beautiful, the design of the city predates the car which makes the bike the most effective means of transportation.  The Mountain.  The culture, the history.  I could  go on and on about why I live and love Montreal, but I’ll stop here.

4. Any future project?

I am looking into getting into more classic touring gear.  Waxed canvas and leather saddlebags, waxed canvas cycling hats (for the rain) and eventually saddles.

5. What kind of bike do you ride?

I cut back to three right now.  I have my work bike; a no-nonsense black fixed gear.  Custom built frame with great components but it doesn´t stand out.  I also have my touring bike which is a Bassi, a Montreal company, built with classic Shimano Arabesque components and wide Nitto bullmoose bars.

And lastly, my 1979 Marinoni, painted pink and built with full Campagnolo Record.  Since being restored, this bike only sees sunny days and hangs out in my living room.
