As a designer, I knew early on that, despite my training, I couldn’t be a modernist. I couldn’t deny my upbringing or where I was from. I had to reconcile certain aspects of what I was taught in design school with my background and find my own way.
A designer typically has clients, but at the same time a designer has to have a sense of ownership over whatever is being designed for it to be any good. Designing is not taking an order at a fast food take-out window. For that matter, design is not about making clients happy.
