Pope Leo XIII’s prayer to Saint Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

Saint Michael, pray for us.

Saint  Thérèse of Lisieux portraying Joan of Arc in a play written by Thérèse herself.  She also wrote several poems in honor of The Maid of Orleans.

To Joan of Arc
by Saint  Thérèse of Lisieux

When the Lord God of hosts gave you the victory,
You drove out the foreigner and had the king crowned.
Joan, your name became renowned in history.
Our greatest conquerors paled before you.

But that was only a fleeting glory.
Your name needed a Saint’s halo.
So the Beloved offered you His bitter cup,
And, like Him, you were spurned by men.

At the bottom of a black dungeon, laden with heavy chains,
The cruel foreigner filled you with grief.
Not one of your friends took part in your pain.
Not one came forward to wipe your tears.

Joan, in your dark prison you seem to me
More radiant, more beautiful than at your King’s coronation.
This heavenly reflection of eternal glory,
Who then brought it upon you? It was betrayal.

Ah! If the God of love in this valley of tears
Had not come to seek betrayal and death,
Suffering would hold no attraction for us.
Now we love it; it is our treasure.

Saint Joan of Arc, pray for us.

Saint  Thérèse of Lisieux, pray for us

Awesome Westerosi Character You Don’t Know (Yet?) Because You Only Watch Game of Thrones: #33 Sarella Sand

I said I was going to hold off on Sarella in case there was a casting announcement, but now SDCC has come and gone and we got nothing so FUCK IT–IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE SARELLA.

Basically Sarella Sand is the biracial, cross-dressing, intellectual, sticking it to the patriarchy daughter of Oberyn Martell. She should be the patron saint of tumblr. She also demands an apology when one of the other students calls her mom a “monkey.” So she’s a social justice warrior like us, y’all!

Sarella’s mother is a Summer Islander who is captain of a trading ship (like Quhuru and Kojja Mo) and her father is, of course, Oberyn Martell. Oberyn made sure all of his girls had a weapon and Sarella’s is the bow and arrow. She is an expert archer.

The reason Sarella is not in Dorne is because she is in Oldtown studying to be a maester at the Citadel, something Oberyn also did for a time. Except women cannot be maesters, so Sarella is posing as a boy named “Alleras” (which is Sarella backwards). Websites out there call this a “theory” but let’s be real, it’s pretty obvious. The backwards name thing isn’t really subtle, nor is the fact that “Alleras” is Dornish and described like all the other Sand Snakes.

Anyway, Sarella seems to be very curious about the world. Arianne remembers her asking a lot of questions about places they had been. And, though she has been at the Citadel for only a year, she’s already forged more links than many of her classmates. (She has been there a year and has three links, whereas in contrast another takes a year to earn each link, and some have none at all.)

In case you were unaware, the Maesters of the Citadel all wear chains around their necks. Each link on the chain represents one area of study. We know that Sarella has her copper link, which means she knows astronomy. She also seems to know a bit about magic and the occult, as she seems friendly with Archmaester Marwyn, who is the Citadel’s expert on those subjects.

Though I’m still skeptical about Marwyn, I am glad Sarella has learned magic-y things from him. It seems like the knowledge is going to come in handy since nobody else has any idea what the shit is going on.

The two important things we know about Sarella are that she appears to be supportive of Daenerys Targaryen for Queen of Westeros (as her father and uncle are). She as been paying attention to the rumors of dragons in Essos and desires Marwyn go to Daenerys in the place of Maester Aemon. The second, and in my mind most important, is that she has promised to “look after” Samwell Tarly. And he does need looking after so I’m glad she’s around. Protect him, Sarella, you’re our only hope!

I am still hopeful that Sarella/Alleras will appear in season 6 of Game of Thrones but I’m not holding my breath. And if she is a) not cast or b) white-washed the riot will start with me.

Fanart of Sarella Sand by my pal onionjulius!

The Empire tortured people, just because it could.

“The law no longer applies to you.” — Lord Vader

Brian Daley, writer of the NPR radio dramas and perhaps the patron saint of this Tumblr blog, was very careful to contextualize the events of the Original Trilogy as a “revolution.” He was so focused on this that each episode of the radio dramatization begins with “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a revolution…” He recognized that to explore the motivations of characters like Luke and Leia, he needed a relatable form of wickedness for the Empire to engage in. He decided on torture. And as heard in the chilling clip above, I’d say he hit his target a little too close to the mark.

February 1 is the feast day of St. Brigid of Kildare.  One of the patron saints of Ireland, Saint Brigid (sometimes spelled Brigit) of Kildare was born c. A.D. 450.  Her mother was a slave, and her father was an Irish Chieftain.  Her father was a pagan, but her mother was a Christian who had been baptized by Saint Patrick.

Much of Saint Brigid’s life is shrouded in the murk of legend and time gone by.  But the stories show that Brigid was a holy and generous girl.  Her generosity irked her Druid father, especially when she gave his jeweled sword to a beggar and told him to sell it for food to feed his family.

Brigid’s father tried to marry her off and get rid of her.  But at 15 she decided to take vows to become a nun.  Before she was 30 the local bishop asked her to found a convent. The convent was at Kildare; in Gaelic Kildare means “Church of the Oak.”  Oak trees were sacred to Druids, indicating that the convent had been erected on a spot where such a tree had once stood.  But now people came from all over Ireland not for pagan worship, but to learn about Christ.

A monastery was built next to the convent, and Saint Brigid also presided over a school of artisans that produced beautiful illuminated manuscripts of Scripture.  As Brigid had been a holy and generous child, Kildare became renowned for holiness and generosity throughout Ireland

Saint Brigid of Kildare, pray for us.
