must they have as they think to themselves “It’s me who’s making him (her)
happy, and he (she) is smiling because of me”? What immense pleasure it must be
to be giving themselves and what they have – and have it accepted openly, see
the most beloved face in the world illuminated by that precious smile, consider the two of them a family even before they
get married officially, share every day and night and learn about each other’s
habits at home. And, ultimately, to share a home and hurry there from work
because they have where to go and who to spend their evenings with. I love
seeing how they absorb each other’s happiness as they look at each other as it fills them with life.
When I look at this, at Jane’s tenderness, the way he feels Lisbon, I’m so happy for her because she will be loved so much and, more than that, she’ll always be shown to what extent she is loved and cared for, and to what extent her needs are his needs. It’s such a delight to see them like this.
“You’re right. I have forgotten how to act like a normal human being. And I play games and I lie and I trick people to avoid the truth of how I feel. And the idea of letting anyone close to me is terrifying for obvious reasons, but the truth, Teresa, is that I can’t imagine waking up, knowing that I won’t see you. The truth is… I love you. You can’t imagine how good it feels to say that out loud, but it scares me… and it is the truth. It is the truth of what I feel.”
