Hey I saw your just abled things post, I'm not trying to refute it or anything, but I was just wondering if you could provide more context for the post? I just wanted a little more clarity so that in the future as an abled person I don't accidentally perpetuate the mindset that the post is calling out

Some examples of the sentiment expressed in that post might be:

  • insisting that light sensitivity problems would be cured “if you weren’t in the dark/wearing those dark glasses all the time!”

  • saying to someone with an illness that causes severe fatigue, “if you stopped lying in bed so much and started exercising more and working outside the home like a normal person you wouldn’t be so tired!”

  • insisting that people who use a wheelchair some of the time are too weak to walk much because they use a wheelchair sometimes

  • saying that doodling in class or other focusing stims are why people with ADHD are unable to focus

  • the idea that trigger warnings “make us more sensitive” and that before trigger warnings were a thing, no one ever had mental illnesses with specific triggers

  • the idea that closed captioning is why you have auditory processing disorder - because it made you too lazy to not have it??? ???? ??

  • in a similar vein, the parents of d/Deaf and HoH kids often refuse to allow them to learn to sign “because it will make communication harder”… like…

  • literally anyone who thinks that disability can be solved by “sucking it up” or “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps

Basically, one common ableist idea is that disability is somehow just a result of “not trying hard enough”, and if you do anything to accommodate it, you’re “giving in to it” and “allowing it to affect you”. Friends and families of disabled people often think accommodating a disability is some kind of fancy laziness that gives rise to the problems those accommodations are meant to solve.

Which is patently ridiculous - abled people don’t only develop bad vision because they have glasses or find it hard to get up on time because they buy an alarm clock. The difference is, abled people live in a society tailored to their needs, so their accommodations seem “normal” while ours are under a microscope.

Anyway it’s super gross and if you hear your abled pals saying this shit to anyone you should let them know how ridiculous they sound.

The First Annual Newschannel 6 Secret Santa

Emma Swan entered the doors of Newschannel 6 looking for a fresh start after an awful break-up, but one look at Killian Jones, and it throws a wrench in her plan.

Author’s Note: Merry Christmas, @notdonewithyou! I am your CS Secret Santa! I am so happy to have gotten to know you and that you have allowed me to create this. For those who don’t know, my husband is a sports anchor, so it’s about time I did this AU. I also created a banner for it :) Also: there’s a reference to one of my favorite modern AUs in this fic ;)
