Summary: When 21-year-old assistant librarian Sirius spots a cute hipster college student at the Seattle Public Library, he just needs to figure out a subtle way of determining whether he’s into guys. But Remus’s life is more complicated than Sirius knows.

Excerpt:

“Remus, will you just fucking talk to me for one minute?”

Remus ducked his head and gritted his teeth, walking on.

“Is it because I’m trans?”

Remus slowed. It would be so easy. All he had to do was say “yes”. Sirius would be hurt, but he would accept it. If he thought Remus was transphobic, he might give up and leave Remus alone. But he did not want to lie to Sirius, or hurt him like that. He suspected Sirius had had enough of that sort of pain for one lifetime.

No, you’re just going to hurt him like this instead, whispered a mocking voice in the back of his mind.

I keep thinking about this

It’s kinda fucked up how straight people pretend like gay people and straight people are equal now that gay marriage is legalized when they literally waited until it was culturally irrelevant to legalize it. Gay marriage was super important during the AIDS epidemic when no cure was being researched and loved ones were dying alone in the ICU because partners who had been together for years werent allowed to tell their loved ones goodbye. And now that HIV/AIDS is practically curable and a very manageable disease they finally give us gay marriage. They kill us in the thousands then give us our rights when they’re not important anymore. Straight people will offer us band-aids while we bleed to death.

JULY 27 - CLARA HALE

Clara Hale, affectionately known as “Mother Hale”, provided care for approximately 1,000 children throughout her lifetime, including children born addicted to drugs, children born with HIV and children whose parents had died of AIDS.

Hale first began taking community children into her home in the 1940s, a few years after she tragically lost her husband to cancer. Her previous cleaning jobs had her working day and night, leaving her little time to spend at home with her three children. Through offering short-term and long-term child care for local parents, she was able to financially support her family and still remain a strong presence in their lives.

Eventually, Hale became a licensed foster parent. She took in seven to eight individuals at a time, caring for 40 different foster children by 1968. Throughout this time, she would also work to find permanent homes for homeless children and teach essential parenting skills to members of her community.

Hale planned to retire in 1969, until a woman pleading for assistance - clearly under the influence of drugs - appeared on her doorstep with a two month-old child. This incident marked the birth of the historic Hale House, where Mother Hale would continue to provide a nurturing home for needy children, chemically-dependent babies and those affected by HIV/AIDS until her death in 1992.

Fenrir Greyback is, perhaps, the most savage person with AIDS alive today. He regards it as his mission in life to attack and infect as many people as possible; he wants to create enough people with AIDS to overcome those without. Voldemort has promised him victims in return for his services. Greyback specialises in children…infect them young, he says, and raise them away from their parents, raise them to hate people without the virus. Voldemort has threatened to unleash him upon people’s sons and daughters; it is a threat that usually produces good results.

J.K. Rowling, The Half-Blood Prince

made a few minor changes- just switched references to lycanthropy to ones for hiv/aids. still progressive? still representation? still a worthwhile metaphor?

“This photo of Nong (five years old) was taken in his hometown of Plong sub-district, Thoeng district, Chiang Rai province on Dec 7, 2009 at a community event near the Thai-Laos border. After both his parents died from AIDS, Nong, who is also living with HIV/AIDS, moved in with his grandfather. A few months before this photo was taken, a meeting was held concerning Nong entering kindergarten. Parents were afraid Nong would bite children and infect them with AIDS. The mayor intervened and allowed Nong to enter school, but he was shunned by teachers and students alike and was rarely seen playing with others. Nong inspired my community health station and I to put on educational workshops and public media letting people know about the dangers and myths about contracting HIV/AIDS.”

Joss Stone showers children with affection as she visits Prince Harry's charity in Lesotho

Prince Harry is set to arrive in Lesotho to open a new children’s centre for his charity Sentebale on Thursday, but ahead of his visit, other stars have been touching down in the landlocked nation. Joss Stone, Harry’s long-time friend, and Call the Midwife’s Laura Main were two of the famous faces who made the trip.

As ambassadors for the Prince’s charity, Joss and Laura were showing their support for Sentebale, which helps some of the most vulnerable children in the African nation. Many of the youngsters have been orphaned after their parents died in Lesotho’s HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The visit at Phelisanong Children’s Home was clearly an emotional day for Joss and Laura, but also one filled with joy and happiness.

The 28-year-old songbird played with the kids, cuddling them and feeding them. Taken by one little child Monvake, Joss broke into song and serenaded the youngster alongside a carer called Ntseliseng.

The Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’ on Me) star also cradled one young child in her lap while they played.

Meanwhile, Laura, 34, huddled the children together for a big group selfie and entertained the youngsters by flicking through the photos afterwards. The actress, who plays Sister Bernadette on Call the Midwife, also let one little girl try on her straw hat.

The stars were visiting the children’s home ahead of Prince Harry’s arrival in Lesotho. The Queen’s grandson will open a new flagship unit, the Mamohato Children’s Centre, which houses 96 beds and helps children overcome the stigma surrounding their diagnosis with HIV.

After visiting Lesotho – the nation dubbed the “Kingdom of the Sky” – during his gap year in 2004, Harry decided to team up with Prince Seeiso to start the children’s charity.

Sentebale, which means Forget-me-not in the local Basotho language, was launched in memory of their late mothers.

The new centre has been named after Seeiso’s mother Queen Mamohato while a dining hall with sweeping views over the imposing Thaba Bosiu plateau will be named the Diana, Princess of Wales Hall.

HELLO!’s royal correspondent Emily Nash will be joining Harry every step of the way on his African tour of Lesotho and South Africa, and will share all the details in a travel diary on HELLO! Online.
