One of the best shows of the year was the Franz Ferdinand show at Pappy and Harriet’s this year. It was amazing to see Franz Ferdinand introduce the audience to new songs from their first record in four years Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action which ranked forty six on the Rolling Stone albums of the year for 2013. Here is an excerpt from my review:

“Alex Kapranos greeted the Franz Ferdinand crowd with a gleeful "Howdy Partners” as he walked on the stage wearing a post modern version of a cowboy jacket paying homage to Pappy and Harriet’s seventy year old hertiage as a former site of old cowboy movies. I was surronded by hardcore Franz Fans who came as far away as Canada to see this band during this Pre-Coachella warm up show prior to Franz Ferdninand upcoming appearance on Saturday at the Coachella Music and Art Festival.“

Brody Dalle shared her new track ‘Don’t Mess With Me’ to the Pappy’s crowd the titled track to her new solo album 'Diploid Love’ which drops on April 28th. Dalle was in good spirits cranking through her punk fused set as her hubby Josh Homme looked on. She dedicated her last song to Alejandra.

She also wished happy birthday to a thirteen year old boy who came down from Santa Barbara to see her show.

As you know I love Pappy and Harriet’s which I consider the best music venue in America located 20 miles north of Palm Springs. I finally finished getting the dust off my blue suedes shoe this week from the Devendra Banhart’s show on Mother’s Day when I found out on Friday that a Devendra’s picture was going to be used in Rolling Stone Brasil. Normally the publicist or the artist sets certain restrictions the most common are no flash and I am normally allowed to photograph the first three songs.

In this case I was asked to only shoot from the side of the stage due to the intimacy of the venue which was a challenge since its dark and I can’t use flash and I was far from the stage. I had to bring out my 2.8 80-200 mm Nikon lens which I never use at Pappy’s. I was able to rest the lens on a speaker and shoot at a very slow shutter speed but for that 1/60th of a second everyone paused and I was able to get the shot. One of my favorite shots of the year.

Tristen returned to Pappy and Harriet’s on Thursday in support of her new pop record C A V E S.

The sweetness of her voice was perfect as she started her set that was chockfull with songs from her latest album. “No One’s Gonna Know” her “gangster song” was wonderful. As Tristen sang “Gold Star” a young blonde leaned against a wall as she placed her hand on her heart and tapped her heel to this infectious melody. The highpoint of the show was her solo of “Bourgeois Bouquet” as she echoed the verse “violent, savage and unruly” you could sense your soul stirred by Tristen’s stellar performance.

Tristen is presently touring to promote her new record C A V E S that came out in October on her own label PUPsnake Records. She will be performing at the Satellite in Los Angeles with Ezra Furman tonight. On Sunday she will be at the Cresent Ballroom in Phoenix, Arizona.

Robyn Celia and Linda Krantz got featured in their little hometown paper the New York Times. Not only do they own and run the best music venue in America, Pappy and Harriet’s, but they are great people too.

Since the NY Times mentioned the Spiritualized show of March 15th of this year I thought I would share a photo from the show.

Just one of many great shows at Pappy and Harriet’s.

The best part of the Coachella Music and Art Festival is what I call the in between days. The days before and after the first week of Coachella when music enthusiasts are treated to shows at Pappy and Harriet’s, last night was no exception when Pappy’s hosted Spiritualized.

The outdoor stage was transformed to accommodate Jason Pierce’s group who is in the desert for the Coachella Music and Art Festival. The sold out show also attracted a few notable music fans including Brett Anderson of the Donnas, Jesika Von Rabbit and Todd Rutherford of Gram Rabbit and Ian Astbury of the Cult.

In spite of the frigid desert temperatures, Spiritualized stunned their devotees with a captivating fifteen song set which included ‘Walkin’ With Jesus,’ 'I Think I’m In Love,’ and 'Soul On Fire.’

At one point a speaker hanging from a beam above the stage started to smoke during a frenzied guitar riff that complimented the perfect performance under the desert stars. If you missed the show you can still see Spiritualized this coming weekend at Coachella.
