One of the most underused characters in Xena: Warrior Princess. Lao Ma played a pivotal role in Xena’s reformation. She changed her life. She gave her the name ‘Warrior Princess’. She was Xena’s first female lover, or so the fanbase believes. And she was only in the show for 2 episodes. ‘The Debt Part I’ and ‘The Debt Part II’. Unless you count her replay scenes in ‘Purity’ and ‘Back In The Bottle’.
To me that is shocking for how significant her character is to Xena. There would not be a Warrior Princess without her. I would of loved for her to have interacted with Gabrielle. Despite her jealous streak, I have a feeling they would of gotten along well. Also would have loved to have learned more about her backstory with having her children Ming T’ien, Pao Ssu and K’ao Hsin, as well as her being a courtesan before she was sold into the marriage of Lao Tzu by Ming Tzu. There is a lot of interesting information that is vaguely mentioned about her that’s never elaborated on and I just think it’s a waste. I don’t know, perhaps the actress just couldn’t do anymore scenes. Who knows? I just wish she had more screen-time for being such an important character to the entire show and with some of the best diologue. I mean seriously, her words are extremely wise and thought-provoking. Some of the best philosophical talk I’ve ever heard in my life.
I always said Xena went for the philosophers and the poets. Just like Gabrielle and Akemi. As well as the culturally orientated.
Played by the talented Jacqueline Kim. Lao Ma is far too underrated, so I thought I’d give her some appreciation by making a gifset of her for you to enjoy.
