Pamiris- The Pamiris are an Iranian ethnic group found primarily in Tajikistan, with smaller populations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since their homeland of Gorno-Badakhshan was annexed by the Tajik SSR, there has been some controversy over the ethnic identity of the Pamiris. Some Tajik scholars have argued that there is little linguistic or cultural difference between Tajiks and Pamiris. However most historians agree that the Pamiris speak an Eastern Iranian langauge, while Tajik speak a Southwestern Iranian language. During the Tajikistani Civil War, most Pamiris supported the United Tajik Opposition, resulting in massacres of Pamiris in the city of Dushanbe and the Qurghonteppa Oblast.
