The tongue twister “She sells sea shells by the sea shore” is thought to be about a famous female paleontologist.
Mary Anning collected both seashells and fossils with her father and sold several to tourists leading to the tongue twister of legend. Then, in 1811, Mary’s brother told her about a skull sticking out of a cliff near their home. Mary dug it out, soon finding a massive skeleton of what she believed was a crocodile. But it was actually a dinosaur, later named Ichthyosaurus. This created quite a stir as most people didn’t believe in dinosaurs at the time. Mary went on to discover the bones of a Plesiosaurus, a Pterodactyl, and a Squaloraja. These days, many people think of Mary Anning as the founder of modern day paleontology.
