pagan tradition

Sorry for barging in on a community issue but ANYONE can be a witch!

Are you a woman who practices witchcraft? You’re a witch.
Are you a man who practices witchcraft? You’re a witch.
Are you a trans person who practices witchcraft? You’re a witch.
Are you a non-binary person who practices witchcraft?
Are you a straight person who practices witchcraft? You’re a witch.
Are you an LGBTIQ+ person who practices witchcraft? You’re a witch.

hello! i've been trying to research magic, but unfortunately most books i find are specific wicca, which i'm not interested in. do you have any book reccomendations that arent wicca centric? thank you! i love your blog :^)

Oh heckin yes I do My amazon wishlist is literally like six pages long… ALL BOOKS

WARNING: This Is Going To Be Extremely Long!

First though I want to note that while I 100% understand your feelings about the Wicca stuff (being a very NOT Wiccan Witch), not all books that are Wicca leaning are bad! I’ve gotten loads of useful information from books that tended to be a little new agey. That’s where being objective comes in! With ANY book, you should take it with a grain of salt, and some with a whole shaker. But it’s up to you to pay attention to misinformation and conflation, and to know how to do research to prove or disprove that something in a book you read is true or not. Does that make sense??

Anywho, a couple of books that are still kind of “Wicca-y” but great:

Those are all books from my personal collection that I would recommend! Now as for the Non-Wicca Books, Let’s dive in! Not all of these have I read or owned, and they are in no particular order. You’ll notice most of them relate to “Traditional Witchcraft” or West Country, because that is where my practice is focused.

PHEW!

That was a lot! Okay anon I hope this gives you a good starting place!

constantly-disheveled.tumblr.com/ask

The tumblr witch scene is one of the most sanitised, coddled ways to get into witchcraft.

That’s not meaning it’s a horrible way to get into it but what I’m saying is ‘emoji spells’ and crystals are very modern things. Sometimes 'New Age’ methods mimic some of the simplest things in the craft which are very appealing as an aesthetic but it’s like selling people a wheel but not the rest of the bike.

Intrinsically it’s becoming more of an aesthetic than a practice, which is fine on some levels, but it’s also pushing young practitioners into a weird space between 'New Age’ jargon and what is actually the craft. How are they expected to get their foot in the door when there’s a huge gap between the people who have actual hereditary/experimental knowledge and them? Especially when online (where older members of the community generally don’t dwell) is filled with New Age mash up info???

Tips for the aspiring Garden Witch

So, you’re past the “Witchcraft 101” phase, and you feel like you’ve chosen your path. Green Witchcraft. Now, labels aren’t a necessary thing, but they do help label yourself to be able to find your kin. That’s a different discussion for another time, but either way, here’s a bunch of things you can do to further your craft other than read up on it on Tumblr.com!

1. Start a garden! If you haven’t done this yet, you should! Beltane is right around the corner at the time of writing, and it is the perfect time to sow seeds outside. Some good options for beginners are: Basil, Mint, Chamomile, Lavender, Mustard, Oregano, Rosemary, Morning Glory, Moonflower, Thyme, Dahlias, Lily Of The Valley, just to name a few!

2. Go for a walk in your local forest and start a notebook on what plants you find where. I personally like pressing flowers and leaves in mine, and then writing down its botanical information, its magical and medicinal value and properties, and where it is found. You can also include illustrations, recipes, and growing information on the specific plants you find, if you were to grow them yourself.

3. Do the same for fauna! Find out which animals live near you, their symbolism, correspondences, etc… Include imagery, illustrations, lore, and other identifying information for them.

4. Visit your local wildlife reserve and learn how you can help! Whether that be learning what a certain type of bird eats, or how to preserve a certain type of beetle.

5. Meditate and attempt spirit conjuration with your plants! Rosemary and Rose tend to be good starting points. Both very feminine and sweet in my experience.

6. Take a tea-mixing class. This way you can mix your own herbal teas for different purposes, both magical and medicinal!

Witchy Mood Music

I responded to a post about chants and music to help raise energy (for hausofsageandcrystals & ace-of-pentacles) before or during practicing magic, and I thought instead of just helping that person, I’d just make a master post to help anyone who might be looking for a list like this.

Each artist is listed here with a link to an example of their music… I would 10/10 recommend all of these artists to anyone with a taste for the medieval/pagan/witchy feel. I will do my best to define the genre of music they all fall under for you guys.

I hope this list is helpful for people! These are just some of my favorites, if there is anyone you think I should add to this list, message me! :)

witchy idea that should be a thing

okay so we should create a little witchy care package with like candles, crystals, tarot cards, or any other witchy items and send them to other witches in the community

Where did the common sense go?

Everyone has seemingly lost their minds when it comes to Witchcraft. Things that didn’t work 20 years ago suddenly do, all because somebody says so. The line of where magick begins and ends has always been blurry, but now it just seems that someone can do the most nonsensical version of “witchcraft” and have the magickal seal of approval stamped on it by all the Witches on this site.
I’m appalled by some of the stuff I see here. It’s absolutely ridiculous. So, since no one else will say it, I will. Some things just don’t work. Period. End of story. They just don’t. Why do some of you think that it’s perfectly acceptable to misguide new Witches? You give them a list of correspondences, literally pulled right out of your ass, and then tell them to go on their merry way. And then they unknowingly fuel the fire by spreading it.
It’s bullshit, and it will end with the death of the Craft if it doesn’t get addressed by other Witches.
