One of the reasons I was gone the last few weeks is because I was out of town on vacation. I was incredibly lucky to go to the beautiful big island of Hawai’i, but it seems that my dead bird proclivities carried even to the Pacific. The coloration seems a bit off, but I believe that this is a Java Sparrow (Padda oryzivora). The Java Sparrow is an introduced species that is slowly becoming more common on many Hawaiian islands, though this was the only one I found myself.

Given that this bird was found next to a road, I’m going to guess that it was likely hit by a car. This is common enough for small songbirds, but a bit odd that there weren’t other Java Sparrows in the neighborhood. It’s a mystery!
