On the responsibility that comes with her skin color: “I don’t feel like the responsibility I feel comes from any place other than my gut. I feel a responsibility to speak about certain things because I wish someone had spoken about them for me. I know I’m in a unique position where lots of people all over the world are seeing me and connecting with me, and perhaps because of my demographic and how limited representation is for my demographic, I do feel not a responsibility but an impetus to speak. It’s an impetus. It’s 2015, man. We could all use some diversity. It can get tedious to have to explain that I speak English because Kenyans speak English.” - Harper’s Bazaar UK, May 2015
“Elmo is with his good friend, Lupita. They are talking about all the great things about their skin. For example, Elmo’s skin just happens to be very ticklish. Lupita’s skin happens to be a beautiful brown color. Skin can come in all different shades and colors. Isn’t skin just the best? However, ticklish or smooth or black or brown or white or tan, be sure to love the skin you are in."
“Northup is a gentleman of mild disposition, easy to like; anyone who has ever feared losing everything will identify with him. But the movie leaves us grieving for the thousands who never knew freedom, who were never able to tell their stories for future generations.”
I need to stay true to my course and do the things I think I’m called on this earth to do, and not worry or stress about what it all means in the grand scheme of things. I think our greatness lies not just in what we do but also in what we inspire others to do.
