The very first episode of The Chronicles of Oz, a new audio drama based on the original Oz books, just came out today. The production is largely based in Australia, with me being one of the non-Australian characters (Dorothy, BTW).
So, what makes it different from every other freakin’ Oz remake? Two things:
1. It is hardcore close to the source materials (we’re talking silver slippers, Kalidahs, the scene on the river, the journey south, whole thing)
2. It’s… slightly more political intrigue than fantasy. As in ‘What would REALLY happen on a divided continent when someone assassinates a tyrant?’
There are a lot of moments of comedy, but there’s also a lot more exploration of the consequences of a girl landing a house on someone and then taking her shoes.
It’s free to listen to, and new episodes will be released regularly. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the first season (6 episodes), with more planned if things go well.
