oxford journals

I salvaged some beautiful tissue paper for my bullet journal this week and I really love this spread. Also, now I have a lot to think about at the moment regarding universities as I really love the university and course at Leeds but I don’t want to give up such an amazing opportunity as Oxford so I’m rather torn. There’s lots of things I need to consider so I think I’ll make a giant pros and cons list this weekend to sort out my options.

No matter how much theory is disguised or repressed, there is no practice without theory. The theory that practice has nothing to do with theory is a theory, a disingenuous and naive one, but none the less a theory.
—  Terry Atkinson “Phantoms of the Studio”, The Oxford Art Journal, Vol. 13, No. 1, 1990, p.49.

I guess you've already done that But can you recommend some resources for studying politics & political science? Thank you so much, I absolutely love your blog 😌

Thank you!!

Full disclosure: I was a joint political science and international relations major, so some of the following resources may be more international relations focused.

Generally, the most ‘useful resources’ will depend on the region and system you’re studying. I’ve included a range of general sources (for those pesky ideology based topics), and some region-specific sources.

Penguin Dictionary of International Relations (.pdf format)

Using a subject dictionary is a brilliant way to get an overview of a new topic. You can use the concepts and theorists noted in the definition to expand your research and refine your understanding on the topic.

Note: don’t follow definitions blindly - even"official" dictionaries hold some political bias.

Open Yale Courses: Introduction to Political Philosophy

[Resources] [Watch Lectures Here]

Yale (and other leading universities) offer online “intro courses”, recorded on youtube. While the topics are US centric, the lectures on philosophers and theories (e.g. Hobbes, Locke, John Stuart Mill, Marxism etc.) provide a useful introduction, regardless of region.

The Conversation

Editions: Australia, United Kingdom, United States, France, Africa

Stay ontop of “current issues”. They may serve as useful examples to illustrate theories, explain concepts and solidify your argument. A good way to do so is to follow a monthly magazine or read academic journals (See below)

For example, The Conversation is written by leading academics and practitioners, but targeted at the layman. It deals with contentious current (and often complex) affairs in an accessible manner. I find that it’s an easy way to get a brief intro into current events, without getting bogged down by political jargon etc.

Academic Journals (e.g. accessed through JSTOR)

Dear god, please utilise your university/ school’s access to academic databases. They should be your point of call when doing a research essay/ any other assignment - not google.

Look at the authoritative journal in your region. It’ll give you a good idea of 1. what the important issues/ discourse in the current literature are and 2. The opinions of the leading academics. For example, the Australian Political Science Association ranks and lists a variety of academic journals here.

Oxford University Press Resources

Aside from being a leading publisher of introductory textbooks, OUP has an interactive site to support its publications. It contains flashcards, revision exercises, examples, and further commentary by the authors. It’s very handy regardless of whether you have the textbook or not.

Crash Course

Sometimes, simple is best! With particularly complex topics,I find its always easier to take a broad stroked view, and then slowly build upon the detail. For example, Crash Course does a brilliant intro to the US system.

Ted ed: Government Declassified

Many of these videos are US centric. Nevertheless, there’s a few interesting videos on political philosophy. And heck, its always a lot more interesting to watch a video than struggle through a 20+ page article!

By region/ subject area

The following resources list a range of additional websites etc which are helpful if you want specific information on a particular region.

UK: Keele’s Guide

US: Library of Congress

AUS: USYD’s resources for political science and international relations and you can find a list of uni resources, think tanks and other orgs here.

Hope that helps!

I’m in a weird place at the moment academically. On the one hand I’m really happy because I found out yesterday that I’ve got an interview at Keble College Oxford in a few weeks. But on the other hand I’ve been finding college quite a bit harder and I’m exhausted from travelling quite a distance yesterday on the train up to Leeds. I’ve also got a lot happening as I have a dance exam and EPQ presentation on Tuesday. 😱 Hopefully things will clear up.

Quote of the week:

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think rather than what to think. - Bill Beattie

An artsier-than-expected image that reflects how my brain/my life/sixth form is at the moment.

After getting rejected from Oxford last week I fell into a slump where I couldn’t bring myself to do much more than lie in bed and contemplate my failure feeling utterly dejected (not that I’m dramatic or anything 😇). I got pretty behind on work, not helped by a brief school trip to London on Monday and Tuesday - although coming back from the trip I don’t feel nearly as upset about Oxford; getting my mind off it has definitely helped me get over it! Anyway, with four pretty big tasks due in tomorrow I’ve been working pretty hard this evening, and after this hopefully I can get back on the sixth form train so to speak and organise my life a bit more.

Also, it’s my birthday next week so I’m looking forward to the celebrations!

Hope you’re all doing well ✨

//I need to stop buying things… Almost died in paperchase and in Blackwells in Oxford. I bought a couple of cute moleskine journals for next year, some Washi stickers, see through coloured postits (they’re my fave) along with a bunch of books… Some of which I’ve already started to a note!.//

OKAY SO LET US IGNORE THE FACT THAT I'VE SPENT ALL DAY SCROLLING THROUGH YOUR FICBLOGGING TAG, but like I stumbled upon the post about Clark and the Oxford comma in his journalism and LET ME TELL YOU, I'm a journalism major and I've had professors tell me straight up that "journalists don't use the Oxford comma." MY LIFE HAS GOTTEN EXPONENTIALLY HARDER WHILE TRYING TO AVOID MANDELA DILDO DEMOGOD MISHAPS. That's all. Sorry for the super weird message? I'm obsessed with your writing.

Today I’ve been working on my Extended Project and I’ve written almost half of it now so I’m on track! I also went on a practice drive with my mum and we’re going to snuggle up in blankets on the sofa and watch Strictly later tonight.
Yesterday I got a letter through the post (always exciting) from the University of Leeds saying that I’ve got offers for both the courses I applied for and that I need to go for an interview but it’s just a formality. I organised that and I’m very excited! Leeds is my favourite university after Oxford so it’s a relief that I have an offer from there even if I don’t get one from Oxford.

Hey, can you rec some royalty fics where one is royal and the other is in uni?

I can ! ;)

- And I’ll judge the cover by the book : At twenty years old Harry has his life figured out. He’ll graduate from the private University of Buckingham and move to Oxford to study journalism. He’ll meet someone who shares his values and accepts who he is, and apply everything his successful parents have taught him.At twenty-two years old Louis has no clue what he wants in life. He’s not sure he’ll pass the year and doesn’t know where he’ll go after that. He spends his time smoking away his doubts about himself with his friends and all he cares about is making sure his family doesn’t fall apart. They don’t belong together.Or a Private University AU where Harry is a queer posh prince, Louis is a closeted troublemaker, and neither expect to understand each other the way they will. (78k)

- call it magic, call it true : Harry Styles loves hockey, art history and speaks Italian. His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Wales is second in line to inherit the British Throne. Their relationship is sometimes a fairytale but occasionally a nightmare.(Louis is the Prince William to Harry’s Kate Middleton.) (17k)

- Pressed Against The Sky : In his final year attending the prestigious boarding school Blake College, Harry, the 17 year-old prince of England, hopes to befriend his new roommate. Louis Tomlinson, the rebellious football phenom, just wants to make it to graduation without losing his scholarship.  (30k)

- Like a Bullet in the Dark   : Prince Harold Edward Styles Lancaster is second in line to the throne of Great Britain. He is also your average Uni student- or he tries to be, anyway. With a promise from the press (and his father) that they’ll leave him alone for four years, he sets out to be a student at Cambridge, when he meets his very normal, very working class, very handsome suite-mate, Louis Tomlinson. Louis makes Harry feel more like a person than he ever has before, which might cause some issues later on- ‘cause Harry has a secret that he’s only told his sister Gemma about. Little does he know though, that Louis has some secrets of his own. A Will & Kate Au- with a twist. (99k)

- Fit for a King   : On the eve of his tenth wedding anniversary, HRH Prince Louis tells a bedtime story to his daughters about how he met and fell in love with their father. Featuring flashbacks and present day fluff and His Royal Majesty, King Henry IX. (21)

- My Fairytale : Prince Louis William of York is tired. He’s tired of formalities.
He’s tired of attending events, showing a nice smile and pretending he knows people he actually has never heard of. Well, he probably has, but he couldn’t care less about them. He is tired of people knowing who he is, and would like to have some privacy when it comes to his personal life. But most of all, he is bored. He craves something different.  Little does he know what kind of “different” he’s getting into when he applies to that studying abroad program.

*britney spears voice* it’s been a while

soft hands, fast feet, can’t lose

American Uni AU. Harry Styles is a frat boy football star from the wealthy Styles Family athletic dynasty. A celebrity among football fans, he knows how to play, he knows how to party, and he knows how to fuck (all of which is well known among his legion of admirers).

Louis Tomlinson is a student and an athlete, but his similarities to Harry end there. Intelligent, focused, independent, and completely uninterested in Harry’s charms, Louis is an anomaly in a world ruled by football.

A bet about the pair, who might be more similar than they originally thought, brings them together. Shakespeare, ballet, Disney, football, library chats, running, accidental spooning, Daredevil and Domino’s Pizza all blend into one big friendship Frappucino, but who will win in the end?

bring your body baby (i could bring you fame)

Eighteen year old Harry Styles just graduated high school and landed a summer job as a waterboy for his favorite football team. His job description is simple: be ready to hand water and towels to players if needed. That didn’t seem to include Louis Tomlinson though, a twenty-three year old, recently transferred Paris Saint-German player, who seems to like making Harry’s job much more difficult than it has to be.

A self-indulgent AU that takes place over the summer of 2015. 18 year old Harry hates pining after people he can’t have, and 23 year old footballer Louis loves flirting with people even though it never means anything.

won’t see it coming till it’s already gone

“Tell me that this is a fake,” Peter says, slapping a handful of papers against Louis’ chest. He says something else, something loud and demanding, barely even pausing for a breath, but Louis doesn’t hear it. All he hears is the sound of his own breathing, the sound of his own heartbeat.

Because this - this looks like a marriage certificate.

For a minute, everything stills, quiets. Louis drags his eyes up, meets Harry’s gaze, fixed on him.

Then the noise is back, shouting voices clamoring to be heard over each other, and Harry is still staring at him.

The ring that Louis hadn’t been able to stop noticing in the loo weighs heavily on his hand. His left hand.

baby, we’ll be fine (all we gotta do is be brave and be kind)

Louis hates Harry. Harry hates being hated. First aid kits and kittens make it better.

They’re both way too fucked up for any all-encompassing friendship, and when you put them together, it’s fucked up squared.
Louis is too acerbic to not hurt people, and Harry is too passive aggressive to stand up for himself.
Louis is too nosy and controlling, Harry is too secretive and distrustful.
Louis is too brash and loud, Harry is too contained and reserved.
Louis is too openly bitchy, Harry is too convincingly fake.

It’s not surprising Louis spent two years hating the kid.

first time catching fire

“Two weeks,” Louis mumbles into his chest. “We just have to wait two weeks.”

A quiet moan rumbles through Harry’s throat and he leans down to bury his face in Louis’s neck, brushing his lips over the feromonis gland he knows is just under the skin. “You’ll be mine in two weeks, then?” he whispers.

Louis moans, then replies, “And you’ll be mine.”

… or, Harry and Louis become mates for life.

happy is the heart that still feels pain

Harry doesn’t know what to say, how to respond. He’s just peed on this boy, who can’t be any older than himself, and he didn’t even have the sense to apologize. “I,” he starts, using his left hand to point at the boy’s ankle. “I peed.”

Instead of getting angry or looking blankly at Harry for being the idiot he is, the boy laughs, and the sound is beautiful. It has Harry smiling, trying his hardest to distract from the awkward situation he created.

“You did,” the boy agrees, pulling his hand from his boxers, where he must’ve been tucking himself away. Harry tracks the movement. “You didn’t even buy me dinner first.”

The last thing Harry needed was the hot RA helping him to make bad choices. Actually, that wasn’t true. The last thing Harry needed was to fall utterly, painfully, stupidly in love with him.

swim in the smoke

“What about this, Captain?” Liam asks, nudging the boy kneeling between their feet with the toe of his boot. The boy hisses and swipes at him, slurring out something unintelligible around the makeshift gag Niall had to stuff in his mouth. He misses by a mile and tries again, just as ineffectively.

Harry looks down at him, at the way the sun streams over his face and shoulders, at the way the gag stretches his mouth, lips pink and chapped. He’s lithe and pretty, smudged all over with dirt. They had found him tied up below deck, mostly unconscious, next to a barrel full of gold. He’s clearly a prisoner, but there’s something familiar about him, something that niggles at Harry’s brain. Something he can’t quite put his finger on.

“Put him in my cabin,” Harry decides, turning back to deal with the rest of the loot. The boys screams out jumbled curse words at Harry’s back, muffled by the gag, and Harry can’t understand any of it.

but why wonder, why wonder?

The one where Marcel Styles has improbably landed a job in the fashion industry, and Louis Tomlinson is the actor-turned-lingerie-designer he’s been infatuated with for years.

worlds will sing as we fall

Harry doesn’t say anything for a few seconds, during which time Liam gets up and excuses himself to the bathroom, practically running out of the room.

“Wait, so what kind of silver are we talking?” he asks eventually. “Like - jewelry? Or-”

“You’re actually considering this?” Zayn asks, rubbing his hands together with glee. “Oh, Lou’s going to owe me a large favor for this.”

… or, Harry discovers one of his vampire boyfriend’s favorite kinks.

They don’t belong together.

Or a Private University AU where Harry is a queer posh prince, Louis is a closeted troublemaker, and neither expect to understand each other the way they will.

take my hand (and my heart and soul)

Harry feels nauseous when he opens his mouth. “Hey. Um, hi. It’s me,” he mumbles before realizing with a jolt that Louis might not have his number anymore. “It’s Harry… Styles,” he tacks on, screwing his eyes shut and pinching the bridge of his nose. This was a terrible idea.

There’s silence on the other end for a long time. Harry understands. He shouldn’t have called. He tries not to let the static swallow him whole.

“I – yeah. Hi,” Louis finally answers, slowly, awkwardly. “I um. Sorry. I heard about your accident. You’re alright?”

Or, the one where Harry hasn’t spoken to his best friend in sixteen months and can’t remember why.

Harry Styles is a fan of One Direction, like not a massive one but they’re cool. He doesn’t go to their concerts, but he buys their CDs and it’d be cool to meet them.
