The next morning that Baekhyun woke up he opened the link and stared down at the phone in shock and confusion; it didn’t make sense to him, he had no clue as to what was going on. He slipped his phone in his pocket and made his way down the stairs.
He sat in the car in silence listening to the soft hum of
the engine as he drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. There were so many thoughts swarming around
in Byun Baekhyun’s head. First and foremost being Y/N; he could never get her
out of the forefront of his brain no matter how hard he tried. He was aware that
their friendship had dipped as of late
and it saddened him deeply. He loved Y/N and not just in a friendly way either,
it was something more than that. He hadn’t loved her for too long, maybe for
around 9 months; it became painfully obvious to him one day when they were
revising alone together in the library, just them two of them nobody else. He
enjoyed her company more than he could put into words and if he wasn’t being
crazy he was sure he could see the glint in her eyes when she looked back at
him. But then again she was a happy person with a bright personality and so it
could just be her happiness shining through.
He never meant for Youngjae, Ana or Y/N to get hurt. It was never his intention; he never envisioned ‘harmless fun’ being like this. Graffiti, yes. Bodily harm, no. To be totally honest Baekhyun had missed hanging out with all of his friends but he was too scared to turn back now, not just because of what may happen to him but what may happen to them…to her.
However, truth be told he was still extremely upset about what Sehun and Y/N had done behind his back. He most definitely felt betrayed especially by Sehun. He knew that Sehun knew; he never outwardly told him, but Sehun was very observant and so what everyone else was oblivious to he could see from a mile off.
If someone had told Baekhyun that he would be involved in
this type of stuff a year ago he would have told them that he was bluffing. But
as of late he was so fed up with his life to the point in which he was sick of
himself. Ending it all had become an optional wild card once or twice but he
decided that was just a tad too selfish and radical. He had so much on his
shoulders; the death of his favourite cousin, the eating issues and now the
exams, which was arguably the heaviest weight of them all. So many people
expected Baekhyun to be the best; perfect little Baekhyun with the perfect
grades. What if he couldn’t do that? What if he disappointed everyone? He
figured it was better to disappoint them all at an earlier stage rather than
later. Nobody knew the demons he was facing, the tremendous amount of anxiety
he had, the tremors and the crying that woke him up in the middle of the night.
It was hard being ‘Byun Baekhyun’, it was hard to pretend he was happy and
carry on smiling. He so desperately needed the space to breathe. The drugs that
Reiji offered were a therapy to the system, but the drugs only lasted a little
while whilst the damage would last forever.
Baekhyun let out a heavy sigh as he opened the car door and stepped into the cold morning air.
“Why am I here? I hate it here.” He mumbled miserably to
himself. As he entered the school building and walked into the common room he
scanned the area and noticed Minseok, who seemed to have spotted him first but
was avoiding his gaze. Baekhyun’s eyes widened as he rushed over to Minseok who
was standing in the corner of the room. “Oi, oi!” He hissed as he stopped
Minseok from walking away by putting his hand out. “What the fuck was that link?”
Minseok stayed silent.
“Minseok!” Baekhyun hissed again poking him in the stomach. “I don’t understand any of it, what has any of that got to do with you?”
Minseok let out a breath as he closed his eyes slowly.
“Use your initiative Baek. What did I tell you before I left yours last night?”
“I know Minseok…but…so—so you’re Ten Lee?” Baekhyun whispered as he moved his head closer to Minseok’s. Minseok bit his lip nervously as he began to look around to make sure nobody was close by and listening in on their conversation.
“No Baek…I’m not Ten. I told you I have a criminal record. Victims aren’t the ones who get convicted Baekhyun…”
Baekhyun blinked once as he looked into Minseok’s face, a bubbling
starting in the pit of his stomach.
“But your name didn’t appear Min… not once.”
“Do you listen to me at all Baekhyun?” Minseok hissed, his face turning slightly red now and Baekhyun could tell that he was angry and uncomfortable for whatever reason. “What did I tell you about my name.”
He looked at Minseok with sad eyes, shaking his head. “I know… but I didn’t want to believe– you can’t be… you’re one of them. One of the boys. Yuta?”
“No.” Minseok mumbled, no longer looking at Baekhyun’s face.
“Oh my gosh…” Baekhyun breathed as he began to stare at Minseok with his eyes wide. He was horrified, it was as though Minseok had warped into another being and now he didn’t know who he was anymore. He took two steps backwards apprehensively as he kept his eyes on Minseok whom was laughing to himself sadly.
“See Baek… now you’re scared of me. Do you want that for yourself? Why do you think I’m trying to stop you before it’s too late? You need to stop hanging out with Yuta…Reiji. He’s no good for you, just listen to me.” He began moving passed Baekhyun.
“What the fuck, no. You can’t just walk away after that, you need to tell me the whole story where do you think you’re going? You need to explain yourself Xiu—”
“My name is Minseok.” Minseok said firmly with an air of anger and assertiveness. “And I have a class to get to.” He continued to walk on, Baekhyun rushing after him.
“Wait!” He hissed and then began to whisper angrily again. “What the fuck did you do to Ten Lee? What happened to Ten?”
Minseok pushed Baekhyun in the chest and glared at him venomously.
“I don’t know.”
You were sat in the class room with your Clemente Jon-Dean anthropology in front of you and an eerily quiet Sehun beside you. In his usual all black attire. However today he was coming across as more intimidated and shy than unbothered. You still had 5 minutes on the clock before your lesson actually started. You cleared your throat awkwardly as you began to speak.
“So I think Jongdae is coming home from the hospital tonight.”
“Mhmm.” Was all he mumbled back.
You tried to think of something else to say to clear the
awkward air that was quite obviously floating around the room.
“Apparently Chanyeol is in today.”
“I know, you mentioned. Besides I’m the group chat just in case you had forgotten.” He tapped his fingers on his desk.
“Yeah…right.” You paused for a moment; 3 minutes left until class started. “Maybe we should talk about last night…”
“I mean you said quite a lot of weird things.” You continued to talk anyway despite him saying no, unable to stop once you had started. You were aware that you were probably making it more awkward but you had to address the elephant in the room.
“I know.” He frowned, keeping his eyes on his slender fingers.
“They were…yeah just really weird.”
“It really was quite odd…I mean you—you know what you said?…”
“For fuck sake Y/N can you stop? I know okay! I know what I said, I remember everything so can we just drop it okay?…Please.” He hissed as he whipped his head up in your direction and back down to his fingers just as quickly.
“It’s fine though, because you didn’t mean anything you
said… did you?”
He didn’t reply.
But once again your question was answered with silence. You felt a wave of awkwardness shower itself over you as you stood up and held your stomach. “Excuse me; I think I’m going to be sick.” You mumbled as you rushed out of the room to the toilet. You ran down the hallway towards the toilet, bumping into someone on the way and knocking them backwards really hard.
“Ouch…Chanyeol, sorry.” You breathed, feeling winded.
“Woah, slow down maybe?” He laughed at you a little and put his hand on your shoulder. “Are you okay, where were you rushing too?”
“Yeah I’m fine, I was just going toilet. I’m glad to see you back. How’s Youngjae?”
“He’s coping. But he’s adamant that he’s seen that face before, the person that kidnapped him. I told him he’s just really scared. We’ve been through so many things. It’s not the first time he’s been through such a traumatic event. I mean he get’s bullied…he’s been…ughh.” Chanyeol swept a hand through his hair.
“It’s okay Chan we don’t have to talk about it now. I’ll
speak to you later.”
He nodded at you and turned the corner.
“Oh wait! Chanyeol, you dropped your…” but he was completely
gone. You bent down to pick up a see-through plastic wallet that he had
dropped. It had some money in it and I.D. You looked at the I.D. closer and
frowned at it.
“What the fuck?…”
The rest of the school day dragged painfully slowly as you had a 5PM finish and you were desperately waiting for it to end. Eventually, after what seemed like a whole lifetime and a day, you were done with your classes. You felt uncomfortable with yourself, because of the fact that you hadn’t done much revision as of late and exams were creeping ever closer. But you felt sorry for Jongdae the most at this point in time. You made a mental note to ring him and check on how he was, though you were sure that Ana was taking great care of him. You stood at your locker, pulling out exercise books that you were intending to study with, whether or not you actually would was a whole other question.
“Hey…can we talk?”
You turned round to face the voice behind you as closed your locker and lifted your bag onto your shoulder.
You hesitated for a second or two but then nodded.
Not long after you found yourself in Oh Sehun’s apartment sitting outside on the balcony with him on two luxurious deck chair, the furniture was as luxurious as they came. It was dark outside, a curtain of black surrounding you, but the city lights were such a beautiful view at this time of the day and it left you in awe. There was juice on the table that was separating the two of you, but neither of you had touched it.
“I umm…about last night.” He cleared his throat awkwardly. You looked at his side profile; he was staring forward at the bustling city, completely avoiding your eye contact. He was continuing to bite his lip nervously. “I mean I know I act cold to you but I do that to everyone, so it’s not like it actually means anything.” He closed his eyes in embarrassment and scrunched up his face. You could see that he was pissed off with himself.
“Baekhyun still hasn’t spoken to anyone since you know.” You said, trying any tactic that you could to make the situation less awkward for yourself.
“Y/N…please can we just stop talking about Baekhyun for one minute. I’m getting so tired of it.” He looked at your briefly before he looked down at his hand which was resting on the arm of the deck chair. “I tried to hide it for so long. To be honest I was doing well until Baekhyun fucked it all up with Mei the other day. He has the tendency to fuck shit up.” He rolled his eyes and then began to bite his lip anxiously. “I don’t know what to say to you…I feel like I owe you an explanation, but I don’t know what to say. And I don’t know if I should say it out loud or not because I know you don’t want to hear it. You want Baekhyun, I get that…but why? He has fucked up.”
“Both of you fucked up Sehun.” You frowned in his direction, you didn’t want to listen to him anymore but you didn’t know how to shut him down. “I don’t know how you expect us to be friends after this”
“Friends…” Sehun laughed dryly as though mocking himself. “Of course, just friends. That’s all it will ever be. We’re just friends… excuse me I need the toilet.” He cleared his throat and quickly disappeared inside the house. On one hand you felt sorry for him but on the other hand you didn’t. You looked down at your fingers as they were fiddling with the bracelet on your wrist and nearly jumped when you heard Sehun come back again.
“Actually you know what I don’t need the toilet, I lied. I’m
not going to be a chicken about this…” He looked at you with a blank expression
but this time around there was a hint of something else there. “Don’t you want
to ask me any questions?”
Actually there were so many questions that you wanted to ask him.
“When? When did you start…feeling this way.”
“Two months after we met.”
Your eyes widened in complete and utter shock, you thought
this was something recent, like a couple of months maximum but here he was
telling you that he had been feeling a certain way for a few years. How did he
hide it for so long? Now you felt uncomfortable, as you thought back to all the
times you were alone in this apartment with him, all those times he was
watching you become flustered around Baekhyun. All this time you thought it was
just an observation thing but now you knew he was watching you like a predator.
You tried hard to conceal the frown that you so desperately wanted to express.
“At first it was just delinquency… me rebelling against my parents so to speak.” He continued as he came back to sit down, but this time he was actually looking at you. “I wanted to do everything they hated, because I couldn’t stand them. I knew how much of a disgraceful son I would be if I were to like someone not as high in status as us, word would probably get around in our community had I ever hooked up with you. So at first it was all just a petty game, but then I realised after two months the only person I was playing was myself because I actually…mhm.” He cleared his throat, his gaze faltering slightly.
“But you’ve always been so…normal I don’t understand this.” You whispered almost inaudibly. “And Mei.”
He scoffed. “Mei was to keep my parents happy, besides she
was a good listener, she made a good friend. I just wasn’t in to her like that…
I’m disgusted in myself about last night, but I meant everything… I was happy
to make you jealous. For a moment it made me feel like I was Baekhyun.”
You sat there in silence; you had no clue what to say. He just told you all of that but you still had no words.
“It doesn’t matter anyway.” He laughed bitterly “We’ll just be friends…let’s just pretend this never happened…”
Minseok and Reiji Text conversation:
Reiji: I saw you speaking to Baekhyun this morning, now he’s not talking to me as much as he was yesterday or any other day before and I can’t shake the feeling that you’ve got something to do with that Kim Xiumin.
Minseok : My name is no longer Xiumin. What the fuck are you messaging me for? I told you I don’t want to speak to you ever again. Leave me alone! Leave Byun Baekhyun and Oh Sehun.”
Reiji: What the fuck did you say to him? You told him didn’t you?
Minseok : Just leave him alone, leaving them alone. Leave Jongdae and his girl alone. Leave Chanyeol and his family alone, what the fuck did he ever do to you?
Reiji: Oh nothing, I just seem to have an addiction with coming back to the same people over and over…
