out of isolation

While I absolutely agree that Lily Potter beat the shit out of snape when he joined the afterlife don’t forget Petunia Dursley.

Lily was estranged from her sister but still trusted her to take care of her son, who was found bleeding and crying on her doorstep after his parents were murdered. Only to find out that they hurt, starved, isolated, lied to, and locked in both a cupboard and then a room with bars on the window the son she died to protect so he could have a better life? I don’t care what the deleted scene said about petunia being sad lily died when she gets to the afterlife it is round two of lily potter MMA smackdown

hey not 2 be That Gal but yall rly don’t make me feel good as a jewish hiv positive lesbian while bein into falsettos. i mean the antisemitism, serophobia, and homophobia is. A Lot.

this isn’t jus straight ppl, jus bc ur gay doesn’t excuse it! i don’t feel safe or feel like I Belong when i constantly see ppl erase these characters’ jewishness or dehumanize the most jewish looking character. it’s gross to not only erase their jewishness and/or play into antisemitic stereotypes, but to also expect jewish ppl to call them out and not sympathizing w how much emotional labor tht is.

it doesn’t feel good when i frequently see ppl use serophobic language or stereotypes! joking abt whizzer giving marvin aids, using serophobic language for Dramatic Effect, playing into the stereotype tht hiv positive ppl are sexual deviants is damaging as a hiv positive gay person.

tht post about whizzer’s flaw being tht hes sexually promiscuous had dozens of notes before ppl actually called out op for it. and there’s still ppl reblogging it uncritically and not seeing anything wrong w it! fetishizing marvin and whizzer, having bi hcs abt them is gross! iding as jewish hiv positive gay men when you’re not jewish and/or hiv positive? bad and disrespectful!

this musical revolves around jewish ppl. it has gay ppl, jewish ppl, hiv positive ppl as main characters and its for those kinds of people. yet yall make us do so much emotional labor and either don’t listen to us or make us feel like we’re overreacting. its beyond disrespectful and needs to change

Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, something truly nasty escaped Earth. They call it giardia, a microscopic organism that their Planetary Protection Officer called “pretty dumb” and “not too bad, really, a week of digestive upset and then it’s over.”

Yes, Earth has a Planetary Protection Officer. They have a Planetary Protection Office, and have had one since they were sending probes around their own solar system. Doctor Ma-et had found it a bit silly, like a child concerned about the cleanliness of their toys, until she learned that the job of the Planetary Protection Office had always been protecting other worlds from Earth.

Simple Sigil Creation: A How-To Guide

One of the most common messages I get on Tumblr goes something like this: “What is your process for creating sigils? It can’t be as simple as scrambling up letters, so what’s the real secret?”

The truth is, there isn’t a secret. Making sigils is actually quite simple. Anyone can do it. Even for a complete newcomer, the process should take less time than a coffee break. While there are many, many ways to create sigils — magic squares, automatic drawing, grid overlays — the methods don’t really matter all that much.

In this post, I’m going to show the step-by-step method I used for creating the most recent sigil I’ve published. It came at the request of a young woman who wanted to catch the romantic attentions of another female. It said simply: “She will see me in a romantic way.”

As you can see, I’ve gone with the most basic sigil-creation method here. I’ve written out the text, and I’ve isolated the consonants from the sentence. While there is an “occult” tradition behind this method, I wouldn’t get hung up on thinking that it’s the “right” way to make a sigil. It’s no better than any other method, it’s just easier to explain.

This first step is meant to abstract the coherent words into a less-coherent jumble of letters. The words stop being as meaningful, but the symbols behind the sigil’s intent remain. To keep things simple — and to speed up my next step — I arrange these letters into a grid.

The next step is to abstract the remaining letters even further. Here, I’ve simply started combining elements of the letters together. I generally start by picking two letters from the grid of consonants, and start combining lines, curves, curls, dots, and other pieces of those letters together.

I try to keep these new symbols as simple as possible — four or five pencil strokes at most — because I’ll be further combining them in the next step.

From here, I generally play around with a few ideas, combining elements of symbols as I go. Sometimes these ideas come easily, as seen in the picture, but sometimes it can take pages and pages of sketches to find one I like. In particularly thorny situations, I’ll even start the entire process over from scratch, just to give myself a clean slate.

Once I’ve found a design I like, it’s time to start on the final design. Much like every other stage in the process, there is no one “right” way to do this. This is also the step where most people could happily stop. When the sigil looks and feels “right” to you, it’s done. The sigil is complete, if you want it to be.

In my case, however, I’m also making art for my website and social media. That means creating a version of the sigil that will (hopefully) catch other people’s eyes. There are countless ways to do this — charcoals, crayons, digital painting, markers — and I’ve experimented quite a bit over the years.

I also like to have an excuse to play with ink and brushes, so that’s how this one came together. I like that it’s a little unpredictable — with streaks and globs and splatter — and I’m always thrilled when a happy accident improves the design.

As you can see, I create tons of variations, tinkering with brush sizes, stroke direction, the amount of ink in the brush, and other stuff. While I liked some of these versions, none of them looked quite right. So, I kept going until I found one that did.

A few ink-soaked pages later, and this version was the clear winner. From here, it was just a matter of scanning the image in and doing a few technical things in Photoshop to make it look better in black and white. I add the text, the watermark, and … that’s it.

Here’s the finished version.

As you can see, there’s no great secret to making a sigil. Nor should there be. Sigils are about focusing intent, and even a few pencil scratches on notebook paper can become a perfectly wonderful sigil with the right intent behind it. Yes, some people (like me) like to do a little showing off with things they picked up from art class, but that should never be a barrier to creating your own personal sigils.

ok but adam getting overwhelmed by his college coursework and being homesick and feeling overall miserable and ronan humming one of his Irish songs softy over the phone and adam just sinking into his bed-covers, slowly starting to feel soothed and calm, because ronan’s quiet voice makes him think of home and safety.

Life progresses too rapidly, people move on too quickly, and I feel myself struggling to catch up more and more each day. After a series of broken friendships and seemingly endless days building up to isolation, I came to realize that everything is temporary, and people will always find a reason to leave.

Maybe that’s the reason why despite all that’s telling me to stay, that it’s too early to go, that I’m too young to leave home—I’m choosing to start over in a city where no one knows my name. Sooner or later, the people I cherish will slowly walk away anyway, until yet again nothing is left behind. And maybe that’s the reason why I’ve been so obsessed with finding a way out of the only life I’d ever known. Maybe that’s the reason why I keep wishfully thinking that just this once – if I were the one who chooses to walk away, losing everything might hurt much less.

Do you think Shiro is going to die? What's with VA's (I think his name is Josh Keaton? Idk) recent post and all lowkey foreshadowing?

(moonwalks in)

The original black paladin has already met an unfortunate end and to repeat the vicious cycle would make this series a tragedy. But because this is an adventure sci-fi show, the new generation will undoubtably surpass their predecessors. Shiro will not fall into the same traps as Zarkon, and rather than dooming him, love will be his salvation. Shiro’s “death” has been this idea alluded to and reinforced since almost day one. The fact that cast and crew are commenting on it now is nothing new, and I think it’s more of a marketing ploy then anything. In Josh’s case, it could mean the Shiro we get back might not necessarily be who we think he is, or his role in the series will drastically change. Or you know, could just be to throw us off. We’ll have to see.

Furthermore, Shiro has already “died” not once, but twice. We’ve seen what his “death” looks like to the paladins, how they react and then move on to compartmentalize their emotions. In Keith’s case we watch him literally go through the 5 stages of grief, as he is the one truly mourning and unable to go forward. We even have some implications of how he dealt with Shiro’s loss at Kerberos–kicked out for a discipline issue, isolating himself from the rest of the world, wondering the desert looking for some sense of purpose. From a narrative standpoint, it just doesn’t mean anything if you still kill Shiro anyway and show this same stuff all over again. You become numb to it.

And it doesn’t make sense to have Shiro always grappling with his fate, desperately trying to escape and live to fight another day, just to have him die in the end. It would render everything he did up until this point useless, and it honestly wouldn’t seem like a noble sacrifice for the universe so much as bad fucking luck. Any one of them could have ended up on Kerberos at some point, so why Shiro? Why did Shiro have to go through all of this? Why did Shiro have to suffer so much and lose everything, including his life?

Because he wanted to go to space? Because he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? That doesn’t sound like a heroic end to me. It just feels tragic and wholly undeserved. Particularly when so much of his character arc revolves around relearning that he deserves to live, that he should survive. “Stop talking like that. You’re gonna make it.” And I mean, we really see how touched Shiro looks when he hears that, how badly he wants to believe it. A huge overarching theme of Voltron is Shiro and Keith’s relationship, which leads into Keith’s affirmation that he’ll be there to save Shiro “as many times as it takes.”

Keith insisting Shiro will live and doing everything in his power to keep him safe is a huge part of the series, and this coming from a character who has struggled to accept his death since Kerberos. In a way, Keith’s been grieving since Kerberos. He didn’t think he’d get Shiro back–he’s not about to lose him again. You can try to say that Voltron in a way is about Keith having to learn to accept Shiro’s death, but I don’t think that’s the case at all. Because he does at one point, but then we get Kuron, and we hear Keith say that he’ll continue to save Shiro over and over. That tells me we’ll see this pattern repeat as many times as it takes for Keith to get it right. For Shiro to finally be safe. And yeah, I think this relates back to the being saved by love rather than destroyed by it thing.

We must also consider the social ramifications of what killing the team’s one disabled and mentally ill character would look like and how that reads. I don’t think Dreamworks would go through with it. Particularly when this is a character who has also expressed a willingness to die already. Shiro surviving against insurmountable odds would mean a lot to a lot of people, myself included, and I don’t think they’d take that away from us. Shiro will live–as he so deserves.

Me: reading Nitori’s wiki page

Page: “The director of Free!, Hiroko Utsumi, commented that, if you left Rin alone, he would be isolated without anyone, so there needed to be a character — more like a conversation partner — who would draw him out. The character who had been born out of this need was Aiichiro. Aiichiro’s role was to draw out Rin’s heart. Because Rin could understand parts of Aiichiro that were like himself, he felt like talking to him.“

Vet Tales, a-woo-oo...?

So Netflix added the 2015 Stanford Prison Experiment movie and hubby and I decided to watch it. The whole time we were turning to each other and saying “Ok but that’s what we do in basic” and “wtf how is this like basic”

-regularly going by SSN/forgetting given name because we’ve adopted our surname

-punished for the sake of punishment

-emasculation upon entry and repeated emasculation throughout, notably emasculation via homophobic/transphobic assertions (now that sexism will garner an EO complaint)

-removal of identifying features aka hair and clothing

singling out deemed “troublemakers” and foster isolation between them and group

-repetition of tasks done competently just to fuck with you (there’s a scene in the movie where a character is forced to make his bed twelve times so that it is perfect while the beds next to him are BLATANTLY more fucked up than his. I felt like I was actually in basic again especially when the other prisoners tried to rush to help him to avoid punishment)

-tricky circular logic to make you wrong and them right

-mass punishment blamed on an individual to stimulate aggression at companions rather than authority

-purposeful sleep deprivation for authority amusement/displays of power

-promises they can’t hit you but does just about everything but that to make you jump, flinch, startle, or make you feel like you MIGHT get hit

-manipulation of past events by telling it their way and asserting you’re the one who’s wrong

-miserable food while assuring you it’s nutritious

-forbidding or discouraging socializing

-discouraging you from seeking higher authority or a doctor

-making you look pretty and proud for your loved ones when it counts

-assertion that there’s nothing wrong with your current situation. You’re just weak.

So like not to be morbid or anything but if you’re interested, the 2015 Stanford Prison Experiment by Kyle Patrick Alvarez is like too real for me tbh Literally me and hubby were blown away at how many times we saw common basic training practices in the movie like no joke - K

So. Ulaz. if he survived. and was on the castle with the paladins for a while. what he might think of 'strange earth customs'. that maybe shiro introduces him to. accidentally. or on purpose. maybe. I mean. you know.

(also I apologize this is only like PART of your prompt because I didn’t want to write a 10k story at work IT’S JUST ABOUT TOUCH AND TOUCHING AND ANYWAY)

a lazy temptation

The Castle was quiet, a gentle hum of energy accompanying Ulaz as he made his usual rounds of the halls. The Princess had kindly gifted him a map of the entire complex, though some spots were suspiciously blacked out. They were easy enough areas to get into, but Ulaz appreciated her general wariness in giving a potential enemy access to the Castle of Lions.

The patrols calmed him, channelled his unused energy into a useful task. Since leaving the Empire to assist the Paladins in the daunting task of wresting control from Zarkon, his routine had become more…lax. The Castle of Lions spanned wide; usually, he was on patrol for hours, just the quiet of his thoughts and the hush of his feet his only company. Solutions came easier in the calm of patrol.

As he turned another corner, the room on the far left flicked, light spilling and fracturing the gentle shadows of the hall. He picked his way over, peering inside, and was surprised to find one of the many lounges in use. A holograph played across the entire far wall, aliens moving and dancing and talking in a language Ulaz could not quite track.

Though he wasn’t interested in the movie.
