our education

anonymous asked:

why do you have science finals if you're studying film?

once upon a time our minister of education was like “FUCK coline specifically,”

more seriously: i’m studying video editing, and they’ve decided we have to know science to know how to make our softwares work. Which we don’t, but, hey. We do learn useful stuff, loads of computer science, some stuff that aren’t useful to video editors but still good to know if you want to work in the film industry like how a camera works, the different types of spotlights etc, and all the science behind it. And stuff that I hate and find useless like electronics & acoustics. so yeah unfortunately there’s a lot of science on the path i chose

This isn’t a story about a client from hell, but I know for a fact that it is advice that comes from dealing with them.

When I was studying 3D animation and visualization, we did customer projects as a part of our education. For each project we had a tutor, someone who worked in the industry and knew the ropes. This is legitimately one of the lessons one of our tutors gave us:

Tutor: In our company, we have what we call an “Ugly Red Blob” method. When a design has been finalized, and it’s time to send it to the client for final review, the last thing we do is we add a big, red blob somewhere in the design. The client will look at the mock-up and say: “Okay, that’s good, but take out that red blob, it doesn’t work with the rest.” The client gets a feeling that they’ve contributed to the design in a significant way, and we can get on with our work, without the client trying to micro-manage every font and color.

I’m crying real trans tears at this…. my whole life I was taught that I was disgusting and unnatural for being trans so to see a kid so openly and happily accept the idea of being gender fluid… I don’t really know how to react other than to just burst into happy tears…
I don’t care if you love or hate Rick Riordan and his writing style, representation is IMPORTANT, especially from such a hugely popular author. Just reading the Magnus Chase series has made me swell with happiness and pride, and seeing it positively effect kids (the target audience cough cough…) is more than I have ever imagined.
Thank you, Rick Riordan, for helping to make the world better by educating our youths, and especially at such a dangerous time.

  • pornhub boss: hey what quirky thing should we do next? people love our sex education and whacky antics! :)
  • pornhub employee: maybe we could actually have our actions reflect our words and remove all the harmful porn on our site and try to make the industry a better place instead of a misogynistic hell hole
  • pornhub boss: you're fucking fired
I’ll respect your opinion as long as you’re educated and as long as you know what you’re talking about, and your opinion doesn’t infringe on the rights of other human beings. Because if your opinion infringes on the rights of human beings, it doesn’t deserve respect. It just doesn’t. If you don’t respect other people’s existence, how can you possibly expect for someone to respect your opinion?

(1) Hi Viria, I hope you are well :) I am sorry to bother you with this, but it's really important for me, and I wanted to share it with you. It'll be long and kinda sad at first, but it gets better, trust me. I'm a 23 y/o latina art student. When I was a baby, my mom left my dad and remarried, and my little sister was born when I was 10. She is the light of my life and I love her to no end. Our mom, however, had had and undiagnosed and untreated mental illness for years, and one day

(2) during a severe crisis she hurt us really bad. I was 12. She was taken away to a psychiatric hospital and Child Services prohibited her from ever getting near us again. Since then, I have been taking care of my little sister and practically raised her while my stepdad worked 2-3 shifts to afford our education and payment for my mom’s hospital, living and meds. He was always working and I took full responsibility for my sis. As you can imagine, even though I loved her with my life,

 (3) the situation was very stressful and exhausting for me. By the time I was 15, I looked every bit a teen mom. One particularly hard night when my little sis had been crying about mom, I couldn’t sleep. So I turned to something that calmed me: the Harry Potter books. I read them online, and somehow ended up searching for HP fanart. That was the night I stumbled upon your DA account. And boy, did I love it! I know back in 2011 your skills weren’t what they are now,

(4) but I was blown away, and what’s more, I felt inspired to draw. I had never tried to make any art before; it wasn’t “my thing”. But that night, you inspired me. As time went by I kept drawing and closely followed your improvements. Your art was so relaxing, calming, and inspiring, that it really helped me during hard times. You kinda dragged me into all the cool fandoms, series and animes, and I found life to be far more bearable with so many awesome things to love and think about.

(5) Your DA and Tumblr were some sort of safe sapce for me. It always cheered me up and gave me joy, peace, inspiration. When the time came, I choose to study Art at college. It turned out you did too, and you kept up all the good stuff in your blogs. Weirdly enough, I kept feeling a sense of pride whenever you improved and got better. I was so strange that you were so so far away and didn’t even know I existed but you helped me so much.

(6) I got accepted at my country’s top University to study Fine Arts; I moved cities and took my sister with me; she grew into a wonderful, sensible, peaceful child, and her presence motivated me to be the best version of myself, while your art motivated me to keep expanding my academic/artistic abilities. Life was hard but good at college, and I had incredible opportunities. I am graduating this spring with an advanced studies specialization, and was recently hired to work at

(7) of a movie. It’s like living a dream. And tonight, just a couple hours ago, the most incredible thing happened. After dinner, my little sis came to me, phone in hand, and said “Hey Ana, you won’t believe what I found. There’s this girl who makes amazing art of all the fandoms you’re in. Her drawings are gorgeous and she has so many!”. She showed me your tumblr. I wanted to laugh and cry. She was amazed when she saw your old drawings and your current ones; speechless.

(8) She fell in love, and you know what? Immediatly after, she went to draw. She’s been doing so the past hours. I know this was offensively long, but Viria, I needed to thank you for what you did. Your art has always been SO much more than just digital drawings of fictional characters. It’s been the source of peace, safety and joy that so many of us crave. You have wonderfully impacted and influenced many people across the world with everything you make.

(9) I am so glad you exist and do what you do; you gave me the hobby that grew into my passion, thaught me so much, inspired me beyond belief and most of all, you helped make life more bearable. And now, you have made the same for my sister. Viria, the world wouldn’t be the same without you. You are truly a magnificent light among us, and for your existence and passion I’ll be forever grateful. Thank you, and may you always live the beautiful, happy, awesome life you deserve. Thank you.

I’m not even kidding I was sitting here peacefully chewing sandwich and by the end of these messages the sandwich was too salty so was my cappuccino I swear you got me to tears and now i’m just like

I’m a shaking emotional leaf but thank you so much for writing me! It means so much and i’m so touched and i just wish you and your sister all the best of luck, though it seems like you don’t really need it. Thank you, and I hope life goes wonderfully for you and your family!

I don’t think I’ll ever get over the time Lexa, a white lesbian character in brownface (with a bindi) got killed off and there was a huge uproar on social media and people rioted on the streets in anger, but when Poussey Washington, a black lesbian, got killed off in a horrifically gruesome way, well white fandom didn’t give a single shit and tried to lecture us qwoc on how her death actually was warranted because it was worth sacrificing what little positive representation we have to educate our oppressors.

something that I have not yet seen discussed in the punching Nazis discussion

I am a woman, and I am queer. If the alt-right got the control they wanted, I would be affected.

I am also cis, straight-passing, middle-class, and, this one is majorly important, fucking white.

Most of the pearl-clutching I’ve seen over how we can’t POSSIBLY meet hate speech with violence, we can’t sink to their level, that makes us as bad as them, etc, etc - most of that is coming from white liberals.

And the thing is, fellow white people, is that this is on us.

You know who’s preaching this Neo-Nazi bullshit? White people. Do you know where this ‘philosophy’ came from, who developed it historically? White people. Do you know who fucked up basically the entire planet, spreading our racism, our homophobia, our sexism, our religious fundamentalism like a gods-damn virus everywhere we went, from North America to Africa to Japan?

White people.

We did this. We allowed it to happen. We invented it historically, we preached it historically, and even when a lot of us learned better, we allowed this shit to grow unmolested in various corners of our society. We even let it get into our governments and houses of law.

So we don’t get to flail and wail and wring our hands. We absolutely do not get to patronisingly, hypocritically chide the various minorities who respond to the hate and oppression we created and allowed and abet with hatred and violence, as if somehow their hate and violence is unjustified. As if we didn’t start it first. As if we haven’t turned our eyes aside, again and again and again, from those in our demographics who preach and act on hatred from positions of power.

You don’t get to criticize an abuse victim for finally hitting back.

The Neo-Nazis and alt-right are our fault, and they’re our responsibility to police and get rid of, because we’re the ones who share their privilege, we’re the ones who can confront and shut them down with the highest chances of success and from the positions of most safety. These are people who demonstrably can’t be reasoned with. It’s been tried. Sure, we can change our education system to promote empathy and enlightenment, but that’s a long-term solution that won’t fix any of the issues facing us right now.

So you - we - have a choice. We can wring our hands and do nothing, the same way Britain and the Allies did nothing when they first heard reports of what the historical Nazis were doing. We can sign petitions they’ll ignore and march in protests they deliberately miscount. Or we can not repeat our predecessors’ mistakes, and stop this shit now, before it gets any worse, before it goes where we know this kind of hate speech goes.

And if that means punching a Nazi in the face, then every single one of us should be strapping on the boxing gloves.

  • Some capitalist: college degrees would be worthless if they were available to everyone
  • Me: those people still have to do the work and get the grades, as well as be accepted into the university in the first place.
  • Me: plus why is the idea of our entire country educating itself so frightening to you, there would easily be so many more advances to improve everyone's lives because there would be an increase in knowledge overall

My Island, my beautiful Island, how you’ve been mistreated.

They’ve taken everything from us yet they expect us to be grateful.

Well we say no more. No more corruption. No more stealing. No more injustice.

We will not sit on our hands. We will not be silenced. We are workers. We are students. We are people.

Where is our respect? Where are our rights?

We fight for our country. We fight for our future.THE EDUCATION OF OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS DEPEND ON THIS. ON OUR ACTIONS.

WE WILL BE HEARD.

HOY NOS LEVANTAMOS, PUERTO RICO.
