The Firebird - Chapter 22

There was always something in the air the day of a show. A quality, a density that wasn’t there at other times, a feeling of immediacy, of nervousness penetrating every single person, from the lead dancers to the technicians.

Some would call it stress.

Even though Katniss knew the whole company couldn’t possibly do more rehearsals, with or without costumes, with or without lights, there was still that bit of doubt, the little voice inside asking whether or not they could have done more. Better. Different.

She knew she had to push that voice away, to not let it interfere with her preparation for the show tonight.

There. He’s done it again. Dropped a bomb that wipes out the efforts of every tribute who came before him.

Well, maybe not. Maybe this year he has only lit the fuse on a bomb that the victors themselves have been building. Hoping someone would be able to detonate it. Perhaps thinking it would be me in my bridal gown. Not knowing how much I rely on Cinna’s talents, whereas

Peeta needs nothing more than his wits.

I look into those blue eyes that no amount of dramatic makeup can make truly deadly and remember how, just a year ago, I was prepared to kill him. Convinced he was trying to kill me. Now everything is reversed. I’m determined to keep him alive, knowing the cost will be my own life, but the part of me that is not so brave as I could wish is glad that it’s Peeta, not Haymitch, beside me. Our hands find each other without further discussion. Of course we will go into this as one.

I know who would be at the Women's March - Peeta fuckin Mellark.

“I made things,” Peeta said, appearing in their bedroom doorway.

“Okay.” Katniss looked up from her suitcase in confusion. He was, of course, in charge of the sign-making for the march. He was the artsy one between the two of them, so it was never a question that he’d be the one to take the lead on that. “Just throw ‘em in the car while I finish packing our stuff.”

“Um.” He wiped at a splotch of blue paint on his cheek and looked a little sheepish. “You have choices, though.”

Katniss dropped the shirt she was folding and narrowed her eyes. “How many choices?”

“I may have gotten carried away,” he admitted. “Just…come and see.”

She dutifully followed Peeta into his studio. Then she stopped in her tracks.

“Holy shit,” she said.

“I know.”

“There’s like…that’s a lot of fucking signs, Peeta.”

He gave her an earnest look. “Maybe we should rent a van instead.”

What are your favorite Everlark fics? What was the first Everlark fic you read?

*sweats nervously*

Oh my… I’m so gonna fuck this up.

I’m sorry that I neglected this ask for a couple weeks *cough cough* but this is like the toughest question in the world. I’m sure I’ll forget to mention so many of them and I don’t want to leave anyone out by mistake.

The first Everlark fanfiction I’ve read was either Growing New Wings by SkyLark89 or The Greatest Sacrifices by @ronjar. I don’t really remember which one.

“Hey,” she said, ruffling his blond curls.

“Hey, you,” he smiled back.

“Marry me.”

He laughed, his eyes bright but disbelieving.  “What?  I think you had too much pain medication.”

She shook her head, never having been this sure of anything in her life.  “Marry me,” she repeated.  “I want your last name, too.”
