When you meet the right person, you know it. You can't stop thinking about them. They are your best friend, and your soulmate. You can't wait to spend the rest of your life with them. No one and nothing else can compare. —How I Met Your Mother.
This theory has been tossed around a lot today and I thought it was ridiculous at first, but I am starting to believe this finale was all some elaborate April Fools Day joke. After some thinking, it is the only thing that makes sense here. Just looking at all the things people have posted here about the finale negating so much of what had been said over the course of the series makes me think Carter and Craig did it all on purpose and that in fact wasn’t the true finale.
So much of what THEY said over the years, too was negated in the finale (about how Barney and Robin were meant to be and they weren’t going to be tested and how Ted and Robin were never going to get together) and that waves a HUGE red flag for me. They just didn’t stay true to the characters AT ALL which is so unlike them. I know it is crazy and ridiculously far-fetched, but it just seems to me like they were just pulling the wool over our eyes.
It just doesn’t make sense how they would spend all this time building up Barney and Robin and tearing down Ted and Robin and building up Ted and Tracy only to have all of that ignored in the finale. I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem like them.
Everybody tune into CBS on Monday night just to be sure.
EDIT: Carter and Craig’s behavior has sort of also peaked my suspicions regarding this all being a hoax. I was at McGee’s Pub in Manhattan watching the finale last night and they were there, too. Afterwards, Carter was giving very vague responses after the finale, like “Yeah we always liked Ted and Robin together” (which goes against the entire rest of the series) and today, Craig posted links to all of the positive reviews of the episode to his Twitter which, to my knowledge, he has never done before. It’s almost as if he is mocking the websites praising the fake ending. I don’t know. It all seems fishy to me. It’s almost as if they had that footage with the kids from the first season and decided to use it to fool people, even though that scene goes against everything the series had done since it was filmed.
