I was 11 when “Top Gun” came out. I ADORED this movie. It is
just everything. I’m going to be honest. It’s a bit of a war propaganda film
mixed with Americana and spread over Wonder Bread. This film was way before Tom
Cruise went nuts and bounced all over Oprah’s sofa.
Kelly McGillis played his love interest. Smack in the middle
of this film is one of the best love scenes. But imagine me sitting there
having to watch it in the theaters along with my mother! I never got the sex
talk. My mother was born during the 40s so you know how that went. When she
gave me the sex talk it was: “You know what your period is, right?” That was
it! I could see how painfully uncomfortable it was for her. Ugh! I wanted the
ground to swallow me up!
Anyway I got off topic.
I couldn’t help but to think of this scene when the Richonne snippets came out. Yes, we want to see everything. I get it. But look at how beautiful the scene with Cruise and McGillis is! I wonder if this was the inspiration for 7.12. I’m thinking that Gimple is Gen X like me so I wouldn’t be surprised.
There’s a lot of tongue action here. You folks in
Richonneville called our attention to the tongue action in Rick and Michonne’s
scene. Thank you and God Bless.
The power ballad “Take My Breath Away” by 80′s group Berlin
is blasting in the background. I think that it may have won an Academy Award
for “Best Song” or something. Richonne is one big 80s power ballad to me. I
play them when I write. This scene ruined me. I thought that’s how sex would
always be. My expectations were HIGH. My first time came pretty close actually.
After that it went a bit downhill.
I guess we get enough realism in our lives.
But it looks like a new generation is going to
develop high expectations as well.
BTW-If you want to see the actual love scene from Top Gun,
here’s the link:
“Remember, son,” his Dad had said, “Falling in love with the sky is foolish. You fall in love with what keeps you here. On the ground. You take care of this for me, that way you’ll always have a little bit of sky with you, and I’ll always have a little bit of solid ground to keep me coming home.”
On this day in music history: September 13, 1986 - “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock, it is the biggest hit for the new wave pop-rock band from Los Angeles, CA fronted by lead singer Terri Nunn. Having written Oscar winning music for films such as “Midnight Express” and “Flashdance”, composer and producer Giorgio Moroder is asked by film producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to contribute to the soundtrack of their film “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, and Anthony Edwards. Paired with lyricist Tom Whitlock, they write the soundtracks two biggest hits “Danger Zone” and “Take My Breath Away”. Both songs are offered to Berlin. Initially, “Danger Zone” (#2 Pop) is planned as a duet, but is passed on to Kenny Loggins when the band declines to record it. Used as the “love theme” for the film, “Take My Breath Away” is an immediate hit with film audiences and record buyers. Entering the Hot 100 at #96 on June 21, 1986, it climbs to the top of the chart twelve weeks later. The song wins the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1987, earning Moroder his third Oscar and becoming the thirteenth song in the rock era to achieve that honor. The success of Berlin’s single propels the “Top Gun” soundtrack to number one for five weeks (non-consecutive) on the Billboard Top 200, and going 9x Platinum in the US. “Take My Breath Away” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
I saw your tag on a fic post and you SHOULD be on an iconic fic list because generally speaking your top gun au would normally be a setting that I wouldn't be able to read (idk why, I have a weird aversion to those settings?) but I was completely immersed in it and could have read a million more words in that universe :) there has only ever been a handful of fics I've felt that way about. You should be very proud of it :)
😭 You are always too kind!!!! Thank you so much, darling. You have no idea how much this means to me (and how much I needed it after the day I’ve had). I am very proud of TMBA. It was such a struggle to write and the fact that I finished it was huge for me. Hearing that it touched other people is just the most amazing thing. I will never get over it. Thank you again for your lovely confidence boost. lots of love! xoxoxoxo
