man, i don't even know what to do with kenny omega man; first he and kota slaughter us with their undying love. now, he riling the shit out of okada and making mr. stoic mcsparkles FEEL things like anger, disgust, irritation and maybe, just MAYBE some grudging admiration and respect. all while kenny just sort of flirts with him in his weirdo passive-aggressive way he did with kota. he's moving on in the most masochistic way possible, i think, although that title's a nice bonus as well.

okay this turned out more about kota/kenny because I hadn’t thought about Kota at all in the context of Kenny/Okada stuff till this came into my inbox, and then the information about Kota being in the G1 came out today and just. it got away from me.

In a wonderful post that you should all check out @mithen said “Kenny alternately taunts and pleads with [Kota] through social media” and I think that’s a great way to describe it.

A theme that arose in Kenny’s Kota-related interviews in 2016 was that Kota probably isn’t even on his level anymore.

“There are precious few people that can change the face of wrestling. It may even just be the two of us. So I’m going to stay here in New Japan, doing my best and waiting for him. (At the G1 finals) I finally surpassed him. I was chasing Ibushi for eight years and finally outgrew him. I hope that’s inspiration for him, right?” - Kenny Omega, Aug 28 2016 (as translated by Chris Charlton (which kenny retweeted))

He’s spent eight years chasing Kota. He wants Kota to come to him this time. He’s been waiting for him in NJPW. He’s been giving him “inspiration.”

Kota defeated Kenny the only two times they’ve ever been in singles competition against each other. Kota has also had matches against Okada at least twice that I know of (not counting Tiger Mask W, who is, of course, an entirely different person) and lost both times. Beating Okada certainly would put Kenny on a whole other level. Especially beating him clean which is something Kenny has been very focused on.

Kenny doesn’t just want to win. He’s made that clear. He wants to beat Okada. Because he’s not just after the belt and the power that comes with it. He’s after the knowledge that he’s better. Better than Okada. Better than Kota Ibushi.

if you look at it like that, one might almost say that he’s been baiting Kota in his current run for the title. I’m better than you. I’m better than you. I’m better than you. I’m doing things you never could. Come home and prove me wrong.

SHE’S SO FREAKING PROUD AND JUST LOVES THEM SO MUCH AND OMFG HEADCANON ACCEPTED. HE CALLS HER FIRST OF ALL THE MEN TO TELL HER. AND ROY HEARS SECOND AND IS SO OFFEND AND SHE JUST SMILES

“I can’t believe Fullmetal told you before he told me,” Roy huffed, crossing his arms over his chest and glaring at the informal wedding invitation his captain had dropped on his desk. The golden letters read, “formal invitation to follow.”

A rare teasing smile touched Riza’s lips. “Are you really surprised, sir? You always were at odds with him. If I didn’t know you two better I’d be shocked he invited you at all.”

Roy stood and crossed the office to the window, staring absently at the rapidly darkening street below. He was silent for a time, the quiet permeating the otherwise empty office, until: “How long ago did he tell you,” he asked pointedly.

Riza watched his back warily, knowing that he’d be offended if he knew the truth. Still, it wasn’t in her to lie to him. “He told me during his layover in the West, on his way out of Amestris last year.”

Roy whipped around to stare at her wide-eyed. “He proposed to her last year,” he yelped indignantly. “But that means,” Roy counted back mentally, “he was barely eighteen!”

“Yes, sir. I’m glad you can still count,” she replied dryly.

He shook his head in disbelief before returning to his chair with an irritated sigh. He ran his fingers through his hair, then laughed hollowly. “How is it that Fullmetal is getting married when I was still in the military academy at his age?”

A trickle of sadness slid down Riza’s spine as she watched the subtle shift in her General’s expression. The disgruntled pinch in his brow gave way to something softer, more akin to regret, and the shimmer in his onyx eyes dulled.

“If it’s any consolation, sir, you were somewhat deprived of the opportunity before the war,” she offered. Right away she knew the words were a mistake as anguish flashed across Roy’s face. He shot her an affronted look, not bothering to mask his emotions in the absence of their other subordinates, but did not reply.

Riza wanted to tear herself away, to snatch her words back from the air and shove them in the trash along with every other thing she wished she could say to him. Instead, she stood by the desk with her spine ramrod straight, feeling the weight of the silence that wedged itself into the narrow space that separated her from the General. It settled on her shoulders and curled up in her lungs as she exhaled every unspoken promise that laid beside her each night.

It was a rapping on the office door that broke Riza’s destructive train of thought. She refocused on the general as his head snapped up from its resting place in his hands. He straightened in his seat and jerked his chin towards the door.

Riza strode stiffly across the room and poked her head into the outer office. A mousy sergeant saluted her, a stack of letters tucked under her left arm. Riza took the papers and thanked her quietly before withdrawing back into the room.

As she sifted through the new mail, Edward’s surprisingly neat handwriting caught her eye, and she frowned at the words staring back at her:

Brigadier General Roy Mustang and Captain Riza Hawkeye
Office #379
East City Headquarters

Riza’s brow furrowed at the oddness of the addressee line as she opened the letter and read. She gasped as her eyes slid across the paper and by the end of the letter her stomach was bubbling with apprehension and excitement.

“Captain, what is it?” Riza looked up and smiled broadly at Roy’s confused expression.

“Edward has requested that we participate in the wedding proceedings,” she said, feeling pride welling up in her chest. “He would be honored if you would walk Winry down the aisle, sir.” Roy’s black eyes widened, his jaw going slack as he stared at her in shock.

“He wants me to act as the father of the bride,” he said incredulously.

“Yes, sir. He said it was Winry’s request.” She hesitated before continuing, heat beginning to rise in her cheeks. “She also requested that I fill the role of mother of the bride.”

Roy started laughing then, his shoulders shaking with amusement. When he caught his breath he leaned forward in his chair, a mischievous glint in his eye, and said, “Write him back that we accept his offer. Tomorrow you and I will need to pick up a chess set; Fullmetal seems to have taken an interest.”

Closer

This is a mess, but as always, I’m a mess. AOS spoilers for the past episode and speculation for a following scene. I won’t let this Woman On Fire thing die if I can help it.

When she first sees him, for the first time in this world, her heart sinks. Not because of the memories that still roll around in her mind, but because of how scared he looks. She feels herself reverting back, repeating, This isn’t Real, but it is. This is the closest she’s been to him in nearly two weeks, the longest they’ve been separated since her six months on Maveth. She just needs to touch him, make sure he’s real.

“Jemma,” he looks up at her when he rasps out her name and she can see he’s swallowing hard, but she can’t figure out why. “Please… don’t come any closer.”

Watching Bungou Stray Dogs

Me: Wow, what great characters! Dazai and Atsushi have a great dynamic, and so do Dazai and Chuuya and Atsushi and Akutagawa! It’s so nice being able to ship the main ships for once!

My rarepair shipping ass: Ship Atsushi and Chuuya.

Young!Royai is adorable and pure and everything and I love the idea of them falling in love as awkward teenagers but then the manga quietly reminds me that Riza addresses Roy as “Mr. Mustang” when they’re standing alone in front of her father’s grave, which makes it pretty clear to me that there were no romantic attachments at the time. Of course, I’m not sure what the original Japanese was, if it actually translates to “Mr.” or if it was something less formal. But regardless, the manga makes it explicit that they were close enough to share personal feelings but not so close that Riza felt like she was allowed to use his first name. So, friends, probably, but lovers, no. (Unless cultural norms are just that wildly different in Japan and if that’s the case someone please tell me so.)

And while that makes me pretty sad because I think their relationship would be even more bittersweet if they’d been in love before the war, it also makes me excited and emotional because that means that sometime between her father’s funeral and her graduation from the academy a couple months after the war, their feelings for each other went from “we lived in the same house for a few years and got along well enough” to “I feel like I can trust you” and “I’ll follow you into hell if you ask me to.” I have a mighty need to know what happened between them that caused this shift and how long it took for them to recognize that it was mutual and if they ever even had to say it aloud at all.

I would give an arm and a leg for a sequel series that solely explores their relationship pre-canon and post-canon.

there’s something inexplainable between those two, they say. it’s like one simply could not fully exist without knowing the other was still breathing. it’s a tether that has stood the test of time, of insanity, of anger, of fear. it is love in its’ purest form, they say. and isn’t that the truth.
