what's your Merlin fandom OTP? and what about it appeals to you (compared to other ships and on its own)?
omg where to even start
Merlin x Magic is my OTP.
It may not be romantic but it’s something and it’s important. His relationship with magic is interesting in that he obviously feels a connection to it but he doesn’t know its history, the details of the Old Religion, or details about other creatures of magic which is so sad to me. He’s proud of what little he can do with his own magic even in season one but feels like a monster– It’s something he’s been taught to think and feel because society has deemed him inferior.
His low self-esteem in the beginning of the series is due to prejudice against sorcerers and his transformation from having low self-esteem to becoming confident in his magic gives me life.
Honestly, Merlin should be unapologetic for who he is (a sorcerer) when the world is telling him he should be ashamed of himself. In a way, it’s the equivalent of unlearning internalized racism/homophobia/misogyny IRL which is why it was such bullshit that Merlin–the most powerful sorcerer to walk the earth–pushes other sorcerers away in favor of protecting his abusers/oppressors for all five seasons.
Magic is something he was born with and it shapes his whole world view. He goes through life as part of the oppressed/minority group and no matter how much he tries to ‘blend in’ or assimilate or what have you, he is still a sorcerer at the end of the day. I mean, his magic is such an integral part of his identity that it’s wild how underrated Merlin x Magic really is! His magic is his own– NOT anyone else’s and it’s certainly not ‘for’ anyone else either.
Anyway, here are some of other favorite OTP’s in case you were wondering: Merlin x Power, Merlin x Independence, Merlin x Respect, and I’m very partial towards Merlin x Lancelot too.
