Excerpt from “Everything You Can Think of is True” — Other Stories and the Horse You Rode in On.
I drew this comic for a forthcoming anthology edited by Ben Juers and Bailey Sharp. It’s about a kid in some kind of research facility who can make stuff real with his mind. It’s very short, but it contains my favourite panel of a dog barking I’ve ever drawn, or ever will draw.

“Leave Luck to Heaven” is the comic I’m most frequently asked about. It was first released as a 32-page minicomic for MoCCA 2011, and it sold really poorly so I never did another print run. Then it was included in the 2012 Best American Comics, but everyone thought it was an excerpt so they kept asking me where they could read more. Now it’s been included in my book, so you can read it there.
The comic is about a video game mentor and his apprentice, and their attempt to find some sort of meaning or significance in an 8-bit game. Sort of. It’s also about masks, birds, dreams, and the aura of the multiple.
My book is out, and I’ll be standing next to it with Conundrum Press at Comic Arts Brooklyn this weekend. I hope to see you there. We can talk about comics or sparrows or something. I’ll draw a little thing in the book if you buy it.
I’ll be posting excerpts from the book this week, but here’s a list of the contents just in case you want to know what you’re getting into:
Everything You Can Think of is True
Leave Luck to Heaven
The Best Donald
And the Horse You Rode in On
“The wide open prairie of Saskatchewan, the domestication of garden gnomes, the psychoanalytic breakdown of 8-bit video games – into these and other subjects Dakota McFadzean digs with his pen and brush, unearthing truths that discomfit even as they entertain. This collection of his best work to date mashes cuteness into cruelty, hope into resignation, and life into death, leaving us with one slow-burning ball of phosphorescent comics.” - Jason Lutes (author of Berlin)
Next week I’ll be returning to my homeland to promote my book, Other Stories and the Horse You Rode in On (Conundrum Press).
