“Don’t be too fat, or too thin, or too dark, or too light; don’t be too sexual, or too chaste, or too smart, or too dumb. Be yourself. But make sure you fit in.”

-OTH, S2

It’s interesting to me that even this many years later, women and girls are still fighting these battles and climbing these same mountains, We’ve made progress, but the underlying truth still remains- women constantly and persistently have to apologize for being who they are, whoever or whatever that may be. Men don’t have too, men never had too, but here we are, still finding reasons to justify living our lives as our true selves. It’s the reason I remind everyone I talk to, even those I haven’t personally met, that they are amazing. It’s why I like every single selfie I see on social media. To see a woman being unafraid to be who she is and sharing that publically, to see a woman feeling confident and brave and beautiful is the absolute best thing in the world.

And side note, even this incredible moment of feminism on this show was immediately followed by a stereotypical “girls in sexy PJ pillow fight”, like it somehow had to “soften the blow” of women standing up for being themselves, which is a let down, but the sentiment was important, all the same.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if you wear combat boots and listen to underground music, wear jean skirts and like pumpkin spice lattes, dance your heart out to N’sync and put your hair in pigtails, play video games and rock thick glasses, wear makeup and love to have sex, or dress conservatively and want to save yourself for marriage. It doesn’t matter if you are a combination of any and all of these things. None of those things make you a nerd, wannabe hipster, a basic bitch, a mainstream follower, a geek, a slut, a prude or a wannabe. It just means you are YOU, and as long as you are being YOU, that’s something you should be proud of. Don’t let anyone label you, judge you, pressure you, ridicule you or dictate how you live your life. Be unabashedly, unapologetically, you. Because no one can do it better.
