Otagi nenbutsu-ji temple is located in the northern part of Arishyama and near Adashino nenbutsuji, one of my favorite temples in Kyoto. Otagi nenbutsuji is a newer temple and really one that had fallen somewhat into disrepair until the early 1900s. There are 1,200 rakan, or status of disciples of Buddha located throughout the site, many with very humorous expressions. These were built and donated pretty recently - 1980s or so. My favorite by far is the one with the cassette recorder. And you thought all temples were stuffy?
