Favorite Anime Creators: Koji Morimoto [ 森本晃司 ] Best known for his work as one of the chief animators of Akira and the director of Satoshi Kon’s Magnetic Rose short, Koji Morimoto is both an incredibly talented animator as well as director. His distinct (sometimes described “experimental”) style of animation can be seen in everything from the infamous Dirty Pair: Project Eden opening, key animation in Space Adventure Cobra, the concert scenes in Macross Plus, and even various opening themes to City Hunter. (You can also see his less experimental animation work in films like Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Fantastic Adventures of Unico.) He’s worked on Katsuhiro Otomo’s projects multiple times–not just Akira and Memories, but also Neo-Tokyo and Robot Carnivalshorts, respectively. One of the founders of Studio 4C, Morimoto left to form team Orphy in hopes to pursue more experimental projects. His unique style and vision also landed him work on everything from music videos for Japanese popstars like Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru, to animating cut-scenes in 2011’s video game Catherine. He is still working today; recently he worked on another project of Otomo’s: animating the opening to his latest anime anthology, Short Peace.
