Dungeons, Dragons, and Dives: Pulled Pork and Hero’s Rest

Welcome back to the Barbarian’s Loincloth, a humble tavern in a small hill village that offers all the typical fare adventurers might eat when they stop to rest. Today’s menu is pulled pork on a bun, a garden salad, sauteed mushrooms, and the perfect beverage to wash it all down on a rainy night: Hero’s Rest. You can listen to these recipes in DD 17: The Great Mushroom War of ‘17.

Pulled Pork

  • Pork shoulder
  • salt
  • pepper
  • ½ onion (or minced onion)
  • other seasoning as preferred
  • Sweet Baby Ray’s bbq sauce
  • mustard
  • ketchup
  • other sauces as preferred

Pull out your slow cooker for this one, folks. Season the pork shoulder and put it and the onions into your slow cooker on high for 5 hours or low for 8 hours. When it’s done, you should be able to shred the pork with a fork easily. Add your sauces - I don’t measure these out, so it’s helpful to know what taste you’re going for. I don’t like mine to be overly sweet or overly spicy, so I go with a lot of bbq sauce, a little ketchup and mustard, and for this batch, I also added a little hot sauce and a little honey chipotle bbq sauce. Mix all this together so the pork is thoroughly coated. Serve on bread or bun and enjoy!

Garden Salad

  • Romaine lettuce
  • tomatoes
  • Mexican cheese, shredded
  • croutons
  • dressing

Shred your romaine with your hands. Dice the tomato into ½ inch cubes. Add a sprinkling of cheese and a small handful of croutons, toss salad, and add the dressing you prefer. Enjoy!

Sauteed Mushrooms

  • Baby Bella mushrooms
  • olive oil

Add just enough olive oil to cover the bottom of your small skillet. On low heat, brown whole mushrooms until tender - about 7 minutes. Salt and enjoy!

Hero’s Rest

  • 8 oz Hot Water
  • 2 oz White Rum
  • .5 oz Irish Whisky
  • 1 TBSP Honey
  • 1 Spiced Black Tea Bag (I used Teavana Organic Chai)

Steep the Tea Bag in the water for 3 minutes, pull out, add the rest of the ingredients and stir in! Delicious, and it’ll warm ya from the inside!

(Note: If you don’t have access to a good spiced black tea, make your own by adding black tea leaves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to a tea infuser, and steep it in that!)

🌒🌑🌘 New Moon Witching 🌒🌑🌘

This past new moon, I did a few witchy things that I want to share with you all.

Early in the day I got myself a snack of ground cherries from my garden. I think ground cherries are the most magical food that I grow. Aesthetically and energetically. There’s something lovely about a little paper lanterns enveloping a golden, sweet fruit.

And then all my witchy doings started because I wanted a cup of tea, so the tea that I made to drink that night was this:

Spicy Renewal Chai

  • 1 part Organic Saigon Chai (david’s tea) or any spicy chai, (energy, motivation, circulation, forward momentum)
  • 1 part Coco Chai Rooibus (david’s tea) or any coconut tea (sweetness, fulfillment)
  • 1 part Slippery Elm (healing, soothing)
  • 1 Juniper berry for each area of your life you’d like a boost or change in. (attracts good luck, to keep the changes positive)
  • Raw (unpasteurized) local honey to taste (sweetness, abundance, motivation)

This tea was delicious, and when you use slippery elm, or other mucilaginous herbs like marshmallow root, the tea gets this viscous texture that gives quite a luxurious mouth feel.

You can do a ritual with this recipe if you like, or just make it as a tasty beverage. Most of the time my tea rituals just include focusing on my intent when adding ingredients, visualizing pouring the moon’s energy into it as I pour the boiling water over it, and then stirring in in my own energy as I stir in the honey. If you’re using tea bags, and you use sigils, writing a sigil on the little tag of the tea bag is a great way to add an extra boost.

Herbal Refresh and Renew Tea

And then I was on a tea-formulation kick, so I made 500 ml of another, more herbal, less beveragey, tea. I feel at my most witchy when formulating herbal or medicinal teas. ** Remember not to use any medicinal herbs without talking to an herbalist or holistic practitioner first. Even ‘mundane’ herbs can have an adverse effect or drug interaction if you don’t know what you’re doing. I formulated this tea specifically for me, and have been studying herbal medicine for 2 years.**

  • 2 parts Peppermint, fresh * (refresh the mind/body/soul, energizing)
  • 1 part Lemon Balm, fresh (energizing, soothing)
  • 1 part Stinging Nettle (nourishing, protection, banishing negativity)
  • 1 part St. John’s Wort ** (attracting happiness, mood boosting)
  • 1 Part Slippery Elm (healing, soothing)
  • ½ Sage, fresh (cleansing negativity from your life)
  • ½ part Rosemary, fresh (memory, work ethic, motivation)
  • 1 Clove for each area of your life you’d like some heat/motivation, or if you need any pain relief.
  • 1 Juniper berry for each area of your life you need some renewal in. (attracts good luck, to keep the changes positive)

I would personally use about 2tbs of this mix to 500ml of water. This will make a 2x concentrated infusion. After combining the ingredients, pour in your boiling water, visualizing pouring the new moon’s energy into it, and then make sure you put a tight lid over it to keep all the volatile oils and energies from escaping. Then set it outside somewhere it can absorb the new moon’s energy. Then in the morning, mix half tea, and half boiling water to make a warm drink and add honey if you like and enjoy!

*All the fresh herbs were harvested that night, under the new moon.

**St. John’s has /many/ drug interactions, do not use it if you’re on any other medications and without the advice of an herbalist.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about why I feel more energized and tend to notice New Moons, rather than Full Moons, recently and I think that I’ve come up with a rather solid reason. I think that if you feel the new moon’s energy more, you’re in a part of your life where letting go and starting new is important. Letting go of old habits, maybe toxic people, maybe let go of your own doubts and fears or any number of other things. And starting new projects, starting new jobs, friendships, a new mentality or outlook is what you need.

Conversely, if you feel the full moon’s energy more, I think its a time in your life when you’re on the right track and maybe you just need an energy boost. Or it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Keep going in the direction you’re headed, keep your current goals in mind and use the energy the full moon is giving you to reach them. Don’t forget to enjoy the benefits that being in the right place gives you.

So since I’ve been feeling the new moons way more than the full moons for the past few months, I figure I need to do some banishing and refreshing. I created this sigil to help with the banishing part, and decided the teas would be for the renewal part.

I Banish Everything that Keeps me from my Greatest Good

So next month, maybe keep yourself from paying too close attention to the moon phases, and instead focus on your own energy. When you feel a day of particularly strong or different energy, look at what moon phase it is and maybe that can give you a hint as to what you need in your life right now.

All the best, in your witchy goings on!

Just got out of class after presenting my speech on the fundamentals of hip hop. It involved demonstrating the elements of hip hop. “Twas fun but I must get to some serious work after some serious procrastination. This is today’s set up with my Sugar Paper Weekly Planner, Sharpie Highlighters, Pilots, and some amazing Chai Milk Tea Boba. 💕📚

anonymous asked:

I know that it's permissible for women to work but are we ENCOURGAED to go out there

Ya di an-neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeela.

You know the answer. And YETTTTTTTTTTT, you want me to use the word ENCOURAGE.

Why do I have to use that word to please you?

I’m now, seriously, going to purposely not use that word because it creeps me out how you need me to say ENCOURAGED.

Like, why all the caps?

Women are permitted to work. Khadijah is a great example. So is the Queen of Sheba, in The Qur’an, or Aisha, but I feel like you already know the Standard Issue Nice Muslim Reponse© to these sorts of questions, so why do I have to say one things or the other?

I’m not going to support the incessant debates over things between young Muslims, that’s why you all are so angry, because no one has just let something go.

Whoever you’re fighting with this about, doesn’t care about your opinion, or mine, so who cares? Move on with your life, skip in a field in slow mo, pray in nature and feel spiritual, then drink organic green chai tea while you eat your naan bread.
